The lifestyle of the ancient eastern mediterranean seems so vibrant and fulfilling, I want to "get it" a little more; what can I read to soak it all in?

Satyricon isn’t set in the eastern med though which is what he specified for some reason. Satyricon is set in southern Italy. Trimalchio’s house is actually at a famous Italian port which was full of nouveau riche irl. Also one section is named “road to croton”

I highly recommend DH Lawrence's Etruscan Places. It's not scholarly secondary literature, exactly, but it's Lawrence's account of visiting an Etruscan necropolis in southern Italy, and imagining the life of the people who built those tombs and were buried in them.

Apologies for not realising how geographically pure you prefer your historical passions. Also the reason I mentioned that I wasn't recommending 'scholarly secondary literature' was that I did read >>23539073
