I hate for a thread to die just for my simple question, so how about a thread where you can ask small questions and get small answers. Is there anything akin to an "encyclopedia of common literary allusion"? Say if I want to look up a reference in a book, anywhere from Greek to Biblical to Modern, without having access to the internet. I am not the most well read guy and I don't have a cell phone so this would be pretty helpful.

Is there a chronological reading list for philosophy anywhere? I've read the pre-socratics, plato and aristotle, but where do I go after that? Do I really skip ahead to middle ages? Doesn't that leave a massive gap?I understand that there might be historical context I am missing.
