it's a book about some guy doing absurd things, except you the reader are supposed to realize society is even more absurd. he literally gets put to death because he didn't go to his mother's funeral. he is the most uninteresting guy in the world, and gets promoted. his boss seethes when he doesn't want to go. he asks a woman if she wants to marry him, and she immediately say yes even though he's cruising through life with the charm of a dead fish and has no redeeming qualities. stuff like that

in effect, neither the world of the Stranger or our world have to make sense. Meursault is indifferent to it all throughout the book, he doesn't give a shit about anything. from his perspective there is no point to existence, because he never bothers to invent one like the rest of us do. why would he be sad over his mother's death - that was always going to happen - or be sad about the arab's death? he's the perfect bystander of everything, as he holds no judgement over anything. he gets put to death because he doesn't give a shit about being part of the system, of pretending to be human in front of the jury. he could have gotten away with murder if he had pretended to care about his mother. only through meursault's perspective can anyone understand how silly this can get.

He throws a massive atheistic tantrum at the end. What’s that all about? This novel just feels like Camus self inserting as a cool dude who does what he wants.

it sounds like camus was doing what he wanted then.

it's the story of a very common sort of guy with no father, no goal, no spine.
he doesn't know why he's there and ends up killing another man out of boredom.
a perfect moron.
