Meursault is indifferent to it all throughout the book, he doesn't give a shit about anything. from his perspective there is no point to existence, because he never bothers to invent one like the rest of us do. why would he be sad over his mother's death - that was always going to happen - or be sad about the arab's death? he's the perfect bystander of everything, as he holds no judgement over anything. he gets put to death because he doesn't give a shit about being part of the system, of pretending to be human in front of the jury. he could have gotten away with murder if he had pretended to care about his mother. only through meursault's perspective can anyone understand how silly this can get.
