Running takes a certain sort of improoover: somebody who will put up with pain to chase a beta-endorphin buzz and enjoys pumping their metrics over time.

Personally, what I do is every morning before remote work, I walk .5 miles to the gym, lift weights, and walk .5 miles home. It just makes it easy. Not so much self-improvement at this point, as maintenance and upkeep. Can't just sit around all day.

As for books... Honestly just read Gene Wolfe's solar cycle. His protagonists are always pushing hard against their own limits.
