I think keeping books is a waste of time, space, money and resources. You need the knowledge, not the hoard. The only reason I could see having one is in the interest of sharing said knowledge, in which case you should be gifting all those books.

I have one small shelf of reference books, but a ton of digital now. And anything periodically handy like cookbooks, as well. Only hardcovers. The only fiction on that shelf is Tolkien and...Quo Vadis, for some reason. I've never read that.
