Realism deprecating into pessimism.

This is something I sense happens a lot in the genre of realism. Where a supposed attempt at realism ultimately falls into a preoccupation with the ugly and ignores or decreases any real elements of beauty that may exist in a subject in a more frank analysis. Ironically distorting the very notion of realism into something more stylized. Maybe as a conscious reaction to romanticism, but still a departure from the real by tending away from things that might illicit something to that effect.
I think even outside of literature, you can see this in movies that go for muted colors even in settings that in Reality should have bright ones being prominent as well.

Anyone know of any writings or commentaries that dig into this phenomina?
