Can someone tell me what "The Double" by Dostoevsky is really about?
>Honest people don't have doubles
I honestly think this quote sums it up. The hero lies to himself constantly and is on 7 different layers of cope at all times. I think his struggle comes from not fully committing to masking or authenticity.

Every Russian novel is just an angry Neckbeard being frustrated with how shit the country is and how much of a beta they are

Why'd you post a picture of me?
>>
>>23625717
>Honest people don't have doubles
>The doctor's first advice to the hero
>The quote about how "it's getting harder to get by without a mask" or something like that
I think these are keys to understanding the story but I can't tell if Dostoevsky's point is
>masking bad
>authenticity bad
>sitting between masking and authenticity is bad
>underdeveloped personality is bad
>coping is bad
>early observation of imposter syndrome
I can't tell which of these understandings to choose.

This. Don't care about anything like having children or being productive. DostoyevJew has the right idea

If you are alluding to Dostoevsky’s worst novels, then, indeed, I dislike intensely The Brothers Karamazov and the ghastly Crime and Punishment rigamarole. No, I do not object to soul-searching and self-revelation, but in those books the soul, and the sins, and the sentimentality, and the journalese, hardly warrant the tedious and muddled search. Dostoyevsky’s lack of taste, his monotonous dealings with persons suffering with pre-Freudian complexes, the way he has of wallowing in the tragic misadventures of human dignity – all this is difficult to admire. I do not like this trick his characters have of ”sinning their way to Jesus” or, as a Russian author, Ivan Bunin, put it more bluntly, ”spilling Jesus all over the place." Crime and Punishment’s plot did not seem as incredibly banal in 1866 when the book was written as it does now when noble prostitutes are apt to be received a little cynically by experienced readers. Dostoyevsky never really got over the influence which the European mystery novel and the sentimental novel made upon him. The sentimental influence implied that kind of conflict he liked—placing virtuous people in pathetic situations and then extracting from these situations the last ounce of pathos. Non-Russian readers do not realize two things: that not all Russians love Dostoevsky as much as Americans do, and that most of those Russians who do, venerate him as a mystic and not as an artist. He was a prophet, a claptrap journalist and a slapdash comedian. I admit that some of his scenes, some of his tremendous farcical rows are extraordinarily amusing. But his sensitive murderers and soulful prostitutes are not to be endured for one moment—by this reader anyway. Dostoyevsky seems to have been chosen by the destiny of Russian letters to become Russia’s greatest playwright, but he took the wrong turning and wrote novels.

I'm way more racist and incelish and buggish. I'm not even brave enough to passive aggressively annoy people with bureaucracy. I'm terrified of any confrontation. In fact I don't even have a job and don't know if I ever will have one again. I might kill myself if a woman suggests she's in love with me. There's something deeply Lynchian about it.
I'm even scared to pour my rotten soul in writing I'll never publish because I'll materialize my mediocrity and be the only terrible witness to it. Writing a whole book like the underground man and even addressing the reader is chad behavior.

Dostoevsky was basically a Christian that realized that atheism was logically correct, so he dedicated his life to overdosing on copium in the form of his christcuck philosophy.
>>
>>23631932
>misreading it this badly

>basically
>copium

Opinion worthless and discarded. Unless of course you can actually defend your statement. Let’s see it. You put forth an opinion, defend it.
>>
>>23625461
You think that it's a timeless cautionary tale about being at the bottom of society. You see this in literary works from Dostoevsky's Notes from the UNderground all the way through Taxi Driver by Scorsese. Those are exactly the same story, man!
>>
>>23631954
Tis the essential point of all of his books that a life of rational nihilism begets ruin and depravity, therefore one must cope with Christ. Seems that you are the one misreading it.
>>
>>23631978
How do you fix those people?
>>
>>23631978
I'm not at the bottom of society but he's literally me. I think it's just a story about self-hatred/self-sabotage, masochism, something like that. A tendency neurotic spergs have.
