Thoughts on Greek/Latin novels?Overlooked, or fortunate to have even survived textual transmission?
>>23630772>The Metamorphoses of Apuleius, which Augustine of Hippo referred to as The Golden Ass (Asinus aureus), is the only ancient Roman novel in Latin to survive in its entirety.
>>23630772There are only four greek novels that survived in their entirety: Daphnis and Chloe, Daphnis and Chloe but they are tsundere, Daphnis and Chloe but with violence and Daphnis and Chloe with SEX SEX SEX.
>>23630772FortunateIf you look at the history of transmission we are lucky anything survived at all
>>23631206sounds kino. what are they actually called?
>>23630772They're great. Callirhoe is my favorite. Over the top, pretty simple but well written Greek, good story. Although I haven't read the Aethiopica yet.>>23631237There are 5:CallirhoeDaphnis and ChloeLeucippe and ClitophonEphesian TaleAethiopica
>>23631273meant for >>23631245Also there are like 4 Byzantine novels although I haven't read them
The Golden Ass and the Satyricon are both a lot of fun.
>>23631524It's a shame the Satyricon didn't survive in its entirety because it's peak comedy. I find interesting that those two are related to the cult of Isis.
>>23632293The cult of Priapus is central to what survives of the fragments of Satyricon and the novel was likely based around a vengeful Priapus in a way meant to harken to the vengeful Poseidon of the Odyssey. I can’t remember anything about Isis in the Satyricon.
