a lot of waits characters find redemption/transcendence in their misery, whereas buks tend to wallow and roll around in it and at best find themselves resigned to their fate.

i saw this guy live in florida, and he was all like "good to be in the sunshine state", and someone yelled out "try the orange juice" and he was like "huh? what? i have no idea what that means" and they were like "you're in florida, dude, where all the oranges are" and then he was like "oh, right" and told a couple short anecdotes about insects getting the vote and bull penis dog treats.

My Daddy told me, lookin back
The best friend you'll have is a railroad track
So when I was 13 I said, I'm rollin' my own,
And I'm leaving Missouri and I'm never coming home

Satchel puddin' and Lord God Mose
Sittin' by the fire with a busted nose
That fresh egg yeller is too damn rare
But the white part is perfect for slickin' down your hair

Blackjack Ruby and Nimrod Cain
The moon's the color of a coffee stain
Jesse Franks and Birdy Joe Hoax
But who is the king of all of these folks?

I dined last night with Scarface Ron
On tilapia fish cakes and fried black swan
Razorweed onion and peacock squirrel
And I dreamed all night about a beautiful girl

Well God's green hair is where I slept last
He balanced a diamond on a blade of grass
Now I woke me up with a cardinal bird
And when I wanna talk he
Hangs on every word

And I'm lost
And I'm lost
I'm lost at the bottom of the world
I'm handcuffed to the Bishop and the barbershop liar
I'm lost at the bottom of the world

Bukowski's characters are all a bunch of f****** retarded losers who wallow in self-pity, whereas most of weights characters are like down and out ne'er do wells who've held onto shreds of their hope and dignity and strive for more. At least in his later stuff. Also there's a lot less anger in Tom's stuff.

Waits is very consistent, I think he hasn't made any genuinely bad album, so just pick up whatever sounds interesting to you and listen.

His career is weird. He got progressively stranger the older he got. I happen to like it all. Except the most bizarre compositions some of those I can't get into. For my money the early years Volume 2 and Blood Money and Nighthawks at the Diner and Mule Variations are the ones you'll want to get a general idea of all his phases.
