I've read Norwegian Wood and Kafka on the Shore and I'd say he's ok but not really groundbreaking, though I still haven't read Wind up Bird or 1Q84.
Read the WUBC, i thought it was really creative and original. Book III kind of suck ass though.I am reading Norwegian Wood, and I'm liking it thus far.So OP just give it a try. The worst that could happen is finding out you don't like his works. That's it.
