Winslow really nailed the gruesome tone in The Cartel. It reads well and has the pace of an airport novel but the darkness and graphic violence gives the thriller much more weight.

Anything else like this? Most spy/war thrillers have a lack of oomph and feel comicy and light.

I read his book Frankie Machine and enjoyed it, maybe I'll check this out when I need some light reading
