Is this a good book to start literature?
>>23980034No, it will turn you off probably. Start with some 19th century novels
>>23980034What the other anon said, you're going to be overwhelmed super quickly by all the historical, mythological and philosophical allusions to derive any enjoyment out of it.
>>23980034Here's what you need to do OP. I'm sure you consume movies/anime/tv whatever right? Look at your favorite genres and then try to find similar books to those shows.
>>23980034Just read, is not complicated.
>>23980034You need a thorough knowledge of Italian poetry to even begin to appreciate properly, so no.
>>23980034Start with The Odyssey or The IliadOR start with Shakespeare (Julius Caesar is a fun one)OR start with Moby-Dick (It's not boring at all, lots of good humor and it's complex philosophically but still way easier to read than people let on)OR start with Don Quixote (it's funny)
It is an absolute classic and one of my favorites but it is also exit level since it still hasn’t been surpassed on complexity. I’d suggest you start with Homer
>>23980034i love it, but no>>23980145also noread something like. Around 100 pages, short stories etc. To keep you motivated and interested. death of ivan illych tolstoiwhite nights Dostoevsky the nose by gogolmetamorphosis by kafkasiddhartha by hesse faust by goethe if you really want poetry You really think reading something that was written 900 years ago will make you fall for literature? Inferno is fantastic and a masterpiece in my opinion, but cmon
>>23980034okay this fag >>23980158 is probably mostly right but i still stand by the fact that don quixote is a good starting point. it was my entry into more "serious" literature and I loved it. Genuinely very funny especially with a modern translation like Grossman or Rutherford.
>>23980034no
>>23980160I don't like it Its just depressing Its like seeing what all the people who make fun of me think of me
>>23980034Dante's like the final boss of literature.Start with the Greeks
>>23980034Start easy. Read someone current and mainstream, and work your way backwards into more and more archaic works. Stephen King gets shit on a lot but he has very good works under his belt.Anons will tell you to start with Plato and Homer but they might read like gibberish unless you get proficient in reading general literature first.Crime and Punishment was probably the easiest piece of 'fine literature' that I've read so it's a good jumping off point if you want to go straight into difficult works
>>23980145A true /lit/izen
>>23981294you're supposed to finish the book
>>23980145The first 20 or so chapters of Moby Dick are a bit boring and also a little gay.
>>23980051This is the worst example you could use, the divine comedy is super complicated, this is the only book you need in your life to reach seraphic insight
>>23980034Poetry takes more time to get the hang of. Probably not the greatest entry point. You won’t be able to appreciate and understand a lot when you just start reading. Literature builds upon itself forward and backwards. The more you read, the more you’ll understand and be able to piece together In the beginning the physical reading is most important. Build a habit even if it’s 10 pages a day. Don’t take any days off or at least not consecutively. Get used to physically reading and build your stamina. Every so often stop and think about what you’ve been reading Short stories are a good starting point. For novels look for ones with short chapters
