Realms and Cosmology EditionWelcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion and development of fictional worlds and settings. Here is where you can share the details of your created worlds such as lore, factions, magic systems, ecosystems and more. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art, either created by you or used as inspiration for your work. Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback!FAQ:>What is worldbuilding?Worldbuilding is the process of creating entire fictional worlds from scratch, all while considering the logistics of these worlds to make them as believable as possible. Worldbuilding asks questions about the setting of a world, and then answers them, often in great detail. Most people use it as a means of creating a setting or the scenery for a story.>"Isn't there a Worldbuilding general in >>>/tg/ already?"Yes, there is. However, that general is focused on the creation of fictional worlds for the intended purpose of playing TTRPG campaigns. Here you can discuss worldbuilding projects that are not meant to be used for a roleplaying setting, but for novels, videogames, or any other kind of creative project.>"Can I discuss the setting of my campaign here, though?"If you want to, but it would probably be better to discuss it on >>>/tg/ . We don't allow the discussion of TTRPG mechanics, however. If you want to discuss stats or which D&D edition is best, this is not the place.>"Can I talk about an existing fictional setting that is not mine?"Yes, of course you can!>"Does worldbuilding need to be about fantasy and elves?"Worldbuilding, as already stated above, and contrary to what many believe, does not inherently imply blatantly copying Tolkien. In fact, there are many science-fiction setting out there, and even entire alternative history settings which do not possess supernatural elements at all. Any kind of science fiction book has an implied setting at least, which involves a certain degree of worldbuilding put into it.Previous Thread >>23945402

All subject to change.>What other realms of existence, if any, exist in your setting, be they physical realms or the afterlife or spiritual realms, and can beings travel between them?Heaven and hell. Hell is empty, it will only be filled on judgement day. Heaven is filled with God and angels, no humans yet.>How is the universe of your setting structured? Is it basically the same as our universe as we best understand it, or are there significant differences, and if so, what are they?Basically ours, except the number of habitable (and inhabited) planets are much, much higher than NASA would lead you to believe.>If it’s possible to travel faster than light in your world, how does it work, and what are the risks? What about traveling forward or backwards in time, or to parallel timelines/alternate realities, assuming any exist (and if the latter do, how do they connect to the “main” universe)? No FTL unless you are an angel/demon. They can only do so because they exist beyond matter.>Semi-related, but do any of the realms/dimensions that exist tie into how the magic, technology, or other abilities in the setting functions, and if so how?Don't know yet.>Lastly, where do you look for inspiration for this kind of thing besides Norse mythology or picture related? What do you look for, what is your process, and what advice do you have for beginners? The bible.>>23984967Alright, so based on what I've written here thus far...Demons are those who swore themselves under the banner of Satan, and are without domain. They cannot manifest on planets (because they are warded against their presence). Instead they roam space formlessly.I'm thinking because they're basically barred from taking physical form, they learned to form astral spaces by 'thinking' at each other. It's not quite an astral plane, they're more like instanced realities held together by thought. They can be accessed/created by other spiritual entities or even humans (sometimes willingly, sometimes not). Although, humans obviously can only access them through dreams or meditation.Thoughts? I need a name for these emulated realities. 'Liminal space' already exists, which is frustrating. Especially because liminal doesn't mean what I think it means.
>>24029505Every human in my world has an elf servant.
>>24029573"Instances" is a good name. Simple and to the point and yet strangely mysterious.
>>24029517>What other realms of existence, if any, exist in your setting, be they physical realms or the afterlife or spiritual realms, and can beings travel between themThere are the two afterlife of what are essentially heaven and hell I a dnd sense. There are also the magical realms, places that have a kind of tie to a certain source of magic. The Wild Realm; the home of Fey and the Wildlings, The Soul Realm; the in-between of being here and passing on, a place of ghosts, The Elmetnal Chaos; a realm that's its namesake, and the The Other Realm; a stamge place none really understand as it is a simultaneous realm of light and dark.
>If it’s possible to travel faster than light in your world, how does it work, and what are the risks?I have two ways in two different setting, both kidn of similar. One setting has it where psychics bound to space ship use telekinesis to poth push the ship ot self and cause it to enter an instance of a FTL-Field -Form. Think of it as a way of turning into energy or entering into a fre of consequence dimension of space. In that same setting there's just a energy field that allows ships to ride in unseen energy currents that exist in the pure void of space, entering a sort of strange spatial state that both allows you to interactwith the energy currents while being untouchable to standard matter. In another there's a spatial dimension that allows for ftl movement but requires the needed energy to achieve it in their and has what is effectively turbulence that needs to be course corrected , with one alien species using psychics in order to both gain the speed and course correct
>>24030249>The Other Realm; a stamge place none really understand as it is a simultaneous realm of light and dark.I’d love to hear more about this realm. Same for the Elemental Chaos.
>>24030241I'll think about it. I do like the simplicity, but I worry that phrases like "within an instance" could throw people off.
>>24029517It's a sci fi book, im not bothered to write a full plot synopsis since I am quite drowsy, but I will answer your questions and maybe give some fun worldbuiling details later.>What other realms of existence, if any, exist in your setting? One of the characters is a disillusioned schizo diplomat by the name of Nicholas, who constantly goes on about how there are beings living within the cracks of rationality. It's never fully confirmed, but I like to make little mystical and weird coincidences here and there that affect the world even if it is a sci fi setting where religion is basically just a tool to push the pro-utilitarian state ideology.>How is the universe of your setting structured? The same as ours, earth and all, but the stories im writing take place in 3 planets directly inspired by South America, Eastern Europe and Afghanistan, with cultural parallels to them and commentary on a couple of tendencies I see often in the modern world. One of the snowy eastern european planets is populated by cave folk named Dresians, Drés was originally a almost inhospitable shithole of a place but it belongs to the same star system as the capital city of the galaxy, so people just had to move in as closely as possible. Since the surface is too cold, they had to adapt the place by mechanically drilling into the planet surface and slowly making underground houses one by one while selling the valuable minerals they found for profit. Their cities are vast underground complexes with artificial lights and heating, cramped community apartments and a overall atmosphere of extreme desperation. Like many sci fi writers, I tweak the last of physics to suit my setting so it doesn't break, but I try to be as realistic as possible when needed. Their societal structure is a bit too messy for a single post>If it’s possible to travel faster than light in your world, how does it work, and what are the risks? What about traveling forward or backwards in time, or to parallelMy story is mostly character and societal centric. It's weird for a sci fi writed to not give a fuck about making specifics over his technology, but I only do when it adds to either the characters or society as a whole. Sure they have faster than light travel but it's never explained how the hyperdrive works, they just go in on various spaceships from place to place and sleep it off. Spaceships can be either the absolute peak of luxury or small and cramped communal spaces.>Do you have for beginners?I just go with my flow and decide what's best for the setting. My only advice for beginners is to make a overemphasis on prose, it's the only way the reader can interact with this world, I personally like making mine visceral with a hint of sarcasm thrown in. A lot of my prose is flip flopping between calculated, pretty, purple poetry language to down to earth, simple language with sometimes even outright visceral swear fests on them.
Reposting from the last thread cause I got no (You)sJust came up with a basic magic system for a small work im gonna work onThe work is basically the recipe book / journal of a small town alchemist. Meant to be a cosy little story about how he runs his shop and his relationships with the townsfolk and travelers. Anyways, alchemy, he thinks, is a completely separate thing from magic, calling it a science and an art, only to learn later on that the lines are not so clearly defined.Magic, in this little world, has two major components, which are a form of sign language to cast spells and the use of materials as "fuel". So as an example, the most basic and nearly fundamental spell is one that allows you to float an object for a short time. It requires a feather of any kind, which is then consumed (many mages have avian pets as a source of feathers) and a hand gesture I haven't defined at this point, to cause the object in the other hand to levitate. The purpose of this is simply that now you have two hands to do the language with, so you can go on and cast more complex spells that require that item as fuel for a "two handed" spell. In essence, casting a fireball, for example>feather, left hand>pinecone, right hand>left hand gesture>pinecone levitate between hands>dual hand gesture to light the pinecone, set trajectory, and launch fireballThis is the basics of the system. The idea I'm going for is that it's something most people can learn to do, however the most advanced spells require years of training, memorization, dexterity, etc. So some will have a more natural inclination to it than others. I don't want to exlain it completely or expand it too much cause, first of all, it's not the central focus of my story, which is alchemy, and because I just prefer when magic is magic and not totally clearly defined.Anyways, the alchemist isnt going to learn magic, but his adopted daughter (her father died in a mining accident using an explosive potion the MC sold him) and apprentice has an interest in it after a wize old mage visits the shop for some potions or whateverWhat do you guys think of the system? It's totally not completely original, I'm sure I've seen something similar in various places, but I can't name any off the top of my head. Actually the inspiration for it was haibane renmei, with the sign language some of the people use in the show, but that's not for magicAnyways, what think? Any ideas for improvement or to make it more unique and novel?
>>24030824Capitalizing the I helps. You could also give each instance a title/name "The Oceanic Instance""Burning Instance""Mal'Ikor's Instnace" etc.
>>24030360Imagine a pitch black void with strange motes of lights here and there, each of varying size. In there the world is the sky that stretches across a central lime instead kf a dome and somehow everything is well lit, without there being a central light source. It's lit in such a way that one barley has a shadow. There's a bit more there but I haven't completed it yet.
Bump
>>24031571I suppose >"An Instance of Mal'lkor"I don't know, we'll see.
>>24029505I’m looking to create a set of realms for the four classical elements of flame, wind, water, and earth, but with a bit of a twist. See, after the gods finished creating the world a war broke out and the gods all vanished, supposedly slain to the last. The mortal realm started to destabilize, but somehow the lords of the four elemental realms that orbit the mortal realm managed to fill the void, each one assimilating the relevant spheres of influence to their realm, from the obvious, like Flame getting the Forge, to the more symbolic/thematic, like Flame also getting War. What spheres of influence would you give each elemental realm? While powerful mages can travel to the realms and/or summon elementals from them, and indeed all elemental magic is tied to the planes, they have a separate section where most beings cannot go. You see, the afterlife was either incomplete or was damaged during the divine war and what was left ended up merging with the elemental realms, so now after death, whatever element a mortal is most aligned with exerts a pull on the soul, and draws them to said plane. Virtuous souls this get to exist in an elementally themed paradise, while the wicked suffer in elemental Hells, like the flame Hell being what we typically think of as Hell being like, until their sins are balanced and they can be reborn to try again, the sins acting as a sort of energizing force for the plane as a whole. How does this rate, and how can I improve it?
>>24031130I like it because it's interesting in itself and could be used as a plot device, though at the same time I think it's a bit lame that mages need to always need materials to cast spells, like, a magic fight would be a summarized to who has the most materials (as if it were ammunition) instead of the classical mage duel being a contest of magical prowess alone. For this I would advice making several magic systems, one for alchemy and another one for spells perhaps.
>>24029505>creating entire fictional worlds from scratchHardly. All you faggots ever do is re-heat the same old fantasy tropes. This is the basic problem with fantasy and sci-fi writers: they have no imagination.
>>24029597How does that work? Seems complicated to maintain.
>>24034256Nice necrobump faggot
>>24034256According to the wisdom of the Eldar, it is revealed that in all things the mutable and transient are guided and governed by the immutable and eternal; as all corporeal forms are influenced by the imperishable spirits of the Elves, and the lesser creations are ordered by the greater whose essence remains unchanging. Mortals, too, are guided in their judgments, which may falter or differ, by the steadfast principles they hold as inviolable. Furthermore, it is evident that, in matters of action, human understanding and desire are prone to falter and stray from virtue in manifold ways; thus, it became needful that the Elves, as stewards of wisdom, should be appointed to watch over and guide humankind, that they might inspire and lead them toward the paths of good.
>>24033537I now like it even more after you pointed out it would be about ammunitionIt makes mage battles about strategy and preparation as well as skill in the artYou could be a damn good wizard able to throw the hardest signs for the most complex spells, but if you forgot to bring your unicorn saliva, that's on you, bud. Ol' sneeder over there who only knows how to cast lightning bolts out of thistle brought a whole bouquet of whoopass for your overconfident and underprepared selfAs a compromise tho, we can say that extremely advanced magic users know how to create bags of holding or something so if they're smart they'll never run out of ammunition
>>24033604Oh look hear, and equally unoriginal faggot calling other people retards. What have you made.
>>24034853>why haven't you shat out generic fantasy slop like meIf you've written anything remotely original, post it here. I'll wait.

>>24029505In my world there are two major realms outside of the prime material, sandwiching it in-between them, the realm of Law and the realm of Chaos. The god of Balance rules over the Prime, while the other gods are all either fully of one realm or the other, like the lord of Justice for Law and the bringer of Mischief and patron of Tricksters for Chaos, what are some other domains that work for gods of either plane, and how can I flesh them our without copying Warhammer, any ideas please?
>>24035805Since you have an opposites thing going with chaos and order, how about something like stregnth and weakness? The plane of stregnth could also encompass things that are long lasting and durable, like stone and metals, for example. The god there would be a patron of physical stregnth in the prime world, but also things like mental fortitude, endurance, etc. The weakness plane doesn't just encompass physical weakness, but also things that are fragile, like flowers, glass, trust, etc. Both are a combination of physical and more "emotinal" things, if that makes sense
>>24033604>he says, reheating the same old words and sentancesThere is not a single original thought in your head
>>24036359Are you saying that those would be sub-planes in the Law and Chaos planes? Good start, thanks, I’ll consider it, what other ideas do you have for either plane and their respective deities?
>>24037171I was thinking more along the lines of those being a third and fourth full planes on a different "axis" from the primeTo further build on that you can have many more full planes as long as you have a dual of pair to serve as oppositesJust think of opposing ideas and if you would want them as whole planes or notYou could go with the sub plane route, but my understanding of your question was that you were wanting full planes
>>24037314I was thinking that it would just be Law and Chaos as the axis, but thanks anyway, I’ll consider it.

How do you strike a balance between making a world that is surreal and dreamlike, but still grounded enough for the reader to relate to? I feel like Dying Earth did a good job of doing both.
>>24038159I mean I kind of tried that with this>>24037934
>>24038159>Dying EarthNot familiar, how does it strike that balance?
>>24039410The world they live in is extremely weird, but somehow it doesn't feel ironic or ridiculous. It's hard to explain.
>>24030898Why are you writing a book about me??
>>24030898Seriously, though, I like your approach that you're not planning on explaining everything about the world and the technology and stuff pointlessly. Gene Wolfe did this pretty effectively in BotNS, for example, where there are tons of scifi and fantasy elements, but they only ever come into view and are explained when the protagonist directly encounters them and needs them to be explained for the reader to understand. There's no need to explain things if it doesn't directly relate somehow to the characters IF the story you're telling is a character focused story.I also agree with your last paragraph about making sure your prose works. The reader doesn't see the same things you do. When you create a world, it's like a web in your head with all of these connections and ties so the picture is full and clear for you, but the reader only gets what you say on the page, and if what you say is unclear, they can come out of it with massive misunderstandings about important elements. Or worse. If what you say is not ENGAGING (it's fucking boring) then they simply won't read it at all. Infact, I think it's probably worse to be uninteresting than it is to be unclear
>>24034256Elves need sex with humans to survive.
>>24037471Ahh I seeYeah I misread your post and didn't realize you were asking for things that could go in each domain. I though you were asking for new domains

>>24035805greetings from last threadI have an idea >OrderA god of war that focuses on discipline and tactics (Athena).>ChaosAnother god of war that focuses on brutality and violence (Ares). They can both be twins if you'd like, or siblings, and both can argue and combat over who is the true god of war. You can also make followers of one autistically hateful of followers of the other. You could even have Order vs Chaos being a secondary conflict for them and have their hatred of each other be the prime conflict they focus on.Bonus points if you make the brutality and violence one a female and the order and disciplined one a male.I've been working on my fantasy race from last thread. I have a lot more on them.do you think it makes sense so far? Bit too rambling and long?

>>24040590Don't worry, he's a side character, a relevant one but still>>24040594I feel the world needs a bit of mysticism around it's fantasy elements and that the sci fi ones can be filled up by the reader's head if needed, im sure most readers don't actually care how the hyperdrive works unless it's plot relevant. Most of the worldbuilding I do is usually to relate back to the characters and where they are, it's very societal focused and I take a ton of inspiration from actual history and places. Most of the technology that IS explained is character relevant, 2 little examples come to mind>Shady bureocrat character that speaks in a overly yet evidently false friendly tone, the type you see from your work managers who go "oh well, I want you to help me help you" and "let's do this together as a team, good luck guys!" and so on. Since he's constantly working at home, he works exclusivly throught a incredibly aggressive looking old hologram model that covers half of the cramped and smelly room it's in, it looks severely aggressive and menacing but it's final result is a very simple arrangement of square pixels doing a =) face that opens and closes. It's mental abuse and interrogation pressure techniques deep down, I don't intend on including his real face.>One of the main characters is constantly obsessed about her rationality, looking smarter and denying emotions like a logic woman of the future. Her whole body has been replaced by cybernetics almost willingly and she lived as a tiny crippled nugget inside it's life systems. Sure it looks taller and threatening than when she was a human but it makes her constantly need morphine and overall lowers her mobility and flexibility. Opening the eggshell just reveals a sordid girl drowning in seep goop.As you can see, both are more allegorical than literal. I work a lot with robots on my storirs as a means of allegory too but I feel I would go in too deep explaining them all.

>>24029505How might a plane of Destruction work besides constant explosions? What about beings native to there besides living ones? And what about a plane of Creation, or gods belonging to either?
>>24041907A plane of destruction should take in materials from other planes and slowly dismantle them. I mean autistically slowlyThere should be a god, for example, who demands sacrifices from the prime realm of technology, like a car, if your world is that far advanced. He slowly takes it apart piece by piece, down to the bolts with methodical organization and care. Eventually going as far as to begin deconstructing the alloys down to metals down to pure elements and eventually into the atoms. His curse is that he can't destory matter itself, so he has to be satisifed with the complete deconstruction down to the particles, at which point those specific particals are given over to the creation plane where an equally autistic brother figure does the entire thing but in reverse. And builds the technology again out of those particlesFinally, the car is given back to the prime plane, after having been destroyed and rebuilt by the cycle of autism that is the gods of these realmsThe car is also a Nissan 300zx 1984 with the pop-up headlights in a crisp, forest green. I take it on night drives through the summer hills and park alongside a river and I sit atop the hood smoking a charter oak cigar while Cities by Anberlin plays as I stare at the night sky>this is the end of everything I am>is anybody out there?>hello! Hello!>broken hearts like promises are meant for lesser knowns>is anybody out there?>alone! Alone!
>>24029517>What other realms of existence, if any, exist in your setting, be they physical realms or the afterlife or spiritual realms, and can beings travel between them?Researchers in the mystical arts theorize that reality and some unknown parallel reality rub against one another or overlap in a way that would cause a transfer of energy from one world to the other, resulting in the ambient magical resource that exists and infinitely regenerates everywhere. >How is the universe of your setting structured? Is it basically the same as our universe as we best understand it, or are there significant differences, and if so, what are they?Different countries enforce different rules to accessing and utilization of magical resources. Some have "wasters" that perform explicitly worthless spells to dim the ambient reservoir available to the population, some allow it freely but only legally for few types of magic, there's even one that exists in an area that's mysteriously cut off from this ambience (this one is a popular mediator for warring countries to meet peacefully.) >If it’s possible to travel faster than light in your world, how does it work, and what are the risks? What about traveling forward or backwards in time, or to parallel timelines/alternate realities, assuming any exist (and if the latter do, how do they connect to the “main” universe)?Rumors exist of people "transforming themselves" into the ambient reservoir, allowing for essentially instant travel to anywhere else where ambience exists, but these are poorly documented cases with no evidence. In tests done by the historic aetherician Juno, she was able to document a misalignment in clockwork that correlated to heavy magical usage in an area compared to relatively normal conditions. >Lastly, where do you look for inspiration for this kind of thing besides Norse mythology or picture related? What do you look for, what is your process, and what advice do you have for beginners?I pull this shit from my dreams, which means I'm probably unconsciously stealing it from elsewhere.

I was thinking about an alien species (that looks like attractive humans, of course) that has a tradition of serious incest. Decided best way to do it is that their genes have a very high rate of succesful mutation. Even Siblings are genetically closer to third cousins due to how wildly their genes deviate from their parents. So basically any type of incestuous pairing except parent-child can produce healthy children at the same rates as non-incestuous pairings. And trust me, I didn't even bother to check whether this makes even a lick of sense.

A simple way to sidestep the eternal fear of job losses due to automation:>Robots require money>Human labour requires less money>Some work is so cheap that automating it will be more expensive than continuing to use humansHowever...there's a catch. You know how population growth and birth rates are falling?>Eventually, immigration stops working>Education rates too high, not enough people for blue collar work>Automation starts replacing humans in richer companies>Labour values continue to rise as automation continues to get cheaperEventually, there are literally no people that want to do blue collar work. Blue collar work is basically just maintaining the robots that can clean an entire factory in 0.015% of the time a human will take, but at less cost and higher efficiency.Robots didn't replace humans, they just replaced our old tools.

what sort of max cull rate could you get away with for a society to develop and function? Like if in the world an unpredictable event occurs with some frequency that would effectively decimate a population in a given area as well as destroying all surrounding infrastructure, how often could such a thing occur to let them still prosper and advance. Assume people organized and developed around this, having all means of production and knowledge duplicated everywhere so they were resilient to such destruction.apparently current population growth is 1.1% per year, so if the cull rate was 10% then you'd have population recovery in only 10 years, but there's no way you'd be able to recover infrastructure for 10% of people in 10 years. I know china can go crazy with city building, making mass population centers in as little as 5 years, but these projects have long term returns factored into their cost, in the scenario I've devised, if it was a 10% cull rate, you'd lose the investment after 100 years on average + the redundancy lowers the economic output of all other populations so the capability to take on massive endeavors is lowered.
>>24046916These are not bad... I'm also thinking there may be a case for classifying angels and demons as types of spirits as well.I was working under "angels, demons, and spirits" but maybe "spirits, which comprises angels and demons among others".

>>24029505In my cosmology there was once one singular plane, a sort of primordial chaos, which broke apart once the primeval substance of reality underwent a shift of its own and split into the essence of Light and Shadow. Once this happened, the first primordial beings started to form, all completely composed of either one force or the other. As time went on and these primordial beings increased in number and power, the first gods came into being, shaping the remnants of the primordial realm into the prototypes of the modern planes. The mortal realm was created as a sort of buffer zone between the Light and Shadow planes, with a few minor demiplanes scattered here and there as time went on. To keep things balanced, each side alternated shaping the mortal realm, Light, then Shadow, then Light, and so forth. As they continued to shape it, each of the gods started focusing on at least one aspect of the new world, and eventually they would instinctively "claim" these aspects, gaining power over them. The Day/The Sun for Light and the Moon/Night for Shadow, is just the most obvious example, I could use some more if anyone has any.Once that was done, the gods of each side combined their powers to create sapient life, the mortal races. Even so, each race is predisposed to one force or the other to varying degrees, and when they die their souls are drawn to the realm they are most tied to, where they get an afterlife based on their morality until their memories made and they are reincarnated once more. What do you guys think, any room for improvement? What about you, >>24040717?

>>24053780Are you sure you want to arbitrarily define abstract concepts as being "Order" or "Chaos"? I feel it is all circumstantial. For example technology can be used for order, like creating roads and phones, but it can also be for chaos, like using guns in an insurrection or nuking a city.Perhaps the gods are all unstable, and they are constantly switching between embodying order and chaos? The god who protected your city for a century might decide to destroy it on a whim?
>>24029505For post apocalyptic america, what are the most popular divided states? What about canada or mexico in that situation?
>>24054713The most popular and developed states would probably be states on the east coast, as they could use boats to trade with other states via the Atlantic Ocean. The west coast doesn't have enough fresh water to sustain much population without access to the Colorado River, which they would probably lose access to in a post-apocalyptic society.Canada and Mexico are both economically dependent on America, so no American government would mean no Canadian or Mexican government either. Most Canadians would probably live in extremely dense cities on the southen border where it is warmest, as 90% of Canada is too cold to be livable without electricity. In Mexico the cartels would definitely be even stronger than they are in real life. Since there would be a smaller market for drugs they'd probably focus on selling guns and slaves. All three countries would have very small populations due to lack of food and water, needless to say.
>>24053883Well, I was thinking that the most powerful entities of each plane would have "claimed" at least one domain when they first crossed the divide to the primordial material plane and starting putting their own twists on things, before the god of Balance rose to power and put restrictions on what they could do, like keeping them from just zapping a race into being whenever they want.Speaking of, what about races BTW, any thoughts for which races might be predisposed to one force in particular over the other, besides a few more typical answers like Dwarves as Order and Goblins as Chaos?

What's worse is that since they were in a higher plane when this punishment took place, the amount of energy produced was fucking absurd and lead to humanity gaining further ascension-power to advance themselves further. >>24055390>I want it to play in the decades/centuries after the collapse like Fallout and others do.Realistically a century after a collapse humanity would mostly have recovered, unless it was something supernatural. It's not like humanity's technological knowledge is going to be lost, even if there is a plague or a nuclear war, and within a few decades your warlords and raiders will form governments that are basically indistinguishable from modern civilization. In 100 years humanity went from the first airplane to landing on the moon, and those were things we didn't even know we could do.
>>24053780>I presume that they don't have to lick it nearly as often if they don't use their breath much? I'd love to talk to you moree about race design when you have the chance. Merry Christmas, BTW!Merry Christmas to you too!As for the breath, I intended it to be something they typically have breathing out in small amounts regularly. This is naturally not desirable in all situations in a more modern context (for example it can damage pillows, plates, it leaves the dust on the ground, etc) so they use tincal/borax to reduce their output slightly enough that they no longer exhale it. More skilled practitioners are able to control it enough they don't naturally output it anymore, so they don't need tincal/borax.I think the hooked end would work. I like symmetry however, so I think I'll have the barb split into two and hook in both directions like picrel >That could work, thanks! What other domains could work for either side? I remember you suggesting the Forge for Order and Gambling for Chaos in the last thread. What about splitting Death between Order and Chaos? You could have Order be "natural" deaths (like certain genetic diseases, cancer) while Chaos can be things like "unnatural" deaths (violence, catching a disease, etc).As for domains, I think a neat idea might be Order could have a construction or building deity, while Chaos can have a wildlife or nature deity. Creatures there could be animals that build stuff (termites, ants, birds with nests, beavers, etc). I was actually thinking the radioactive dust would be very flammable after depletion, as depleted uranium is IRL. It can be struck with a hammer to fragment and ignite it. >>24050882After much thinking, I've decided there are angels, demons who lost their bodies as punishment for their rebellion (or a result of their festering hatred, unsure) and roam as spirits (provides more reason for them to create instanced realities, a desire to possess bodies, and why they don't manifest on Earth easily) while other fallen angels spread across and took on new shapes. So all spiritual entities are angels, with some fallen and becoming demons, faeries, different types of youkai, etc. Rather than have middle spirits as a category, it's more like all these beings trace lineage back to angels. It's a bit less awkward and oversimplified this way.

>>24062030You know I had an idea for something similar to "Middle spirits" in my setting. They were nature spirits akin to the lesser gods of Shintonism in that a given land had it own god that watches over it. In truth they were some spirt that was decently tied to an area and gathered enough power to do things, and typically they were just animal spirits that had been around long enough to be considered powerful and intelligent. They were categorized as "Nature Gods" in the whole "What God do you worship" of my world, with the other two being "Heaven" and "Hell" .

I'm working on a fantasy story. >>24055652Eastern dragons mog western in terms of the coolness factor. Mine are kept divine and rare. Their origin can be traced back to Void Dragons, a Void Being species made pure out of Void Essence (yes, i like the word void). They are colossal (think the size of a small country) and exist deep underground (past the mantle), maintaining and creating the spiritual veins responsible for all spiritual energy above the surface. Because of this, they manage to manifest themselves in magic abilities when the energy gets pure enough. Their existence is unknown by surface dwellers, and the only reason the contemporary dragon race above the surface exists is because of an incident eons ago where a set of circumstances caused a lone Void Dragon that had managed to form a consciousness to escape above the ground and wreck havoc. That Void Dragon is basically the progenitor of all surface dragons. This knowledge has been lost to time/is currently inaccessible.

Marriage is Order (strict ceremony, legal rules, etc.), but Love is Chaos (love is spontaneous and can be out of the blue).Another good one I thought of was a Fate domain for Order and a Make-Way/Pathbreaking for Chaos. The Order domain believes in a preset destiny, but the Make-Way or Pathbreaking domain involves forging one's own path. As for religions, you could have Order have a few large sects and Chaos with smaller sects like your post mentioned. You could also even have Chaos have many people who worship in their own way, telling others to worship their own way as well. The sects could form by people following one popular person's way.>>24062536I think those ideas are good. >>24029517The questions pertaining to this worldhttps://pastebin.com/SUWWnr64>What other realms of existence, if any, exist in your setting, be they physical realms or the afterlife or spiritual realms, and can beings travel between them? There's an unknown number of planes, but three have been identified. There's our world, referred to as "The Surface," "The Abyss," a realm an ambiguous number of planes below ours, which is where most of the story takes place, and then there's a plane an ambiguous number of planes above the Surface referred to "The Sky." There also is an afterlife attached to each plane. Now, while looking into or projecting into them is possible, direct travel between them is complicated. In order to "Ascend" up a plane, something of equal value (IE has very similar qualities) must descend a plane>How is the universe of your setting structured? Is it basically the same as our universe as we best understand it, or are there significant differences, and if so, what are they? The Surface is much like ours, but the Abyss is extremely different and while it's technically perfectly livable it's also exceptionally dangerous. Nobody has seen the Sky besides humanity. >If it’s possible to travel faster than light in your world, how does it work, and what are the risks? What about traveling forward or backwards in time, or to parallel timelines/alternate realities, assuming any exist (and if the latter do, how do they connect to the “main” universe)? It's technically possible but nobody has ever been powerful enough to try. Opening up gates to other planes of existence is also flat-out out of the question because nobody is sure how to do that.>Semi-related, but do any of the realms/dimensions that exist tie into how the magic, technology, or other abilities in the setting functions, and if so how? Each plane has it's own kind of magical energy, although the way they differ is unknown.>Lastly, where do you look for inspiration for this kind of thing besides Norse mythology or picture related? What do you look for, what is your process, and what advice do you have for beginners?Team ICO's and Icepick Lodge's works are my major inspirations aesthetically and tonally, along with a random Roblox game I played once.
>>24062900Glad that I could help! I'd imagine that there's only a limited amount of time that they can do that for before they have to stop, if just so they can still breathe normally, right? That kind of implies that Marriages and Love cannot actually coexist in a relationship, but still an interesting idea. How about Technology/the Forge for Order? That kinds of reminds me of Fate and the Lady from the Discworld books, been ages since I thought of them. You familiar with them? Speaking of marriages, any thoughts on how each side of things might handle things like marriages, births, or funerals? I'm assuming that the Chaos faiths would at least have one or two core tenets/traditions that tend to carry over to most sects.
>>24064516I'd love to hear more about the magic in this setting, and the nature of the Abyss. Not to mention how Humanity reached this "Sky" and what it's like. Is there any way to game the system of "Ascending" to higher planes?
>>24062900Thanks. So, the Creation idea would have the two be part of a singular shared plane? Also, I've been reading the rest of the thread more closely, any ideas for gods for each plane beyond some of the things already mentioned, like Storms or Black Holes for Destruction or Arts and Stars for Creation? Death could be Destruction and Life Creation, of course, but what else, maybe Time for Destruction?Nice! How exactly does rune magic work in your setting, BTW?
>>24064709Magic is nothing short of extraordinary complicated because you have to learn how to do every aspect of a spell, including shit as basic as separating magic from your bodyNobody knows what the Sky is like except for humanity, but the few accounts that exist paint a picture that could best be described as Sky Children of The Light, at least appearance wise. Nobody knows what humanity does up there, but it’s called a paradise.
>On January 1, 2025 every human on Earth gets one wish. No wishing for omnipotence or more wishes. Anything else goes. What happens?
>>24064387Sorry, didn't see yours. I think your idea is good, "Breath of the Stars" is a cool formal name that sounds magnanimous. I think that humans would give it the name "death breath" because they suffered it's negative effects more>>24051963I think it's good so far. I assume that Light is not necessarily good, and Shadow is not necessarily evil?As for ideas of domains, you could have Winter be associated with Shadow and Summer with Sun. Sleep with shadow can work too. >>24064632Yes, they'd have to eventually release it, but I mean, marriage and love can coexist. It's just that marriage does not necessarily include love (it's legal ceremony, it's binding rites, etc), while love does not necessarily include marriage (lots of bastard children running around). In that sense, some people could be blessed both by Order and Chaos. I assume there are some who may wish to straddle the lanes of both?Heard of Discworld, but never read it. I'm a bit after Pratchett's time. As for marriages, you can have Order be sticklers on tradition (think like the wedding ceremony in the movie Corpse Bride) while Chaos is more rowdy. >>24064734>Thanks. So, the Creation idea would have the two be part of a singular shared plane? You could have that, or you could also have them be separate but also have a sort of shared plane. That way you can have one purely be creation, one purely destruction, and some area that is shared.Ideas of gods for each plane, you could have natural disasters for Destruction, as well as things like Mining or various resource extraction. For Creation you could have Farming, as well as things like Rain (feeds plants) and technically volcanoes may count as creation since they create earth. As for rune magic, it's basically binding magic into a rune and then the rune can be triggered later. Typically runic magic is somewhat difficult, as a significant amount of energy is needed to activate it. But with the Lungmarian's depleted uranium dust, it becomes a lot more effective as the dust can take the place of the activation.
>>24029505What's a good way of making divine power(magic from the gods) different from regular magic. One idea I have is casting method/use but that only seems like step one. Any other ways?
>>24065706Regular magic is blue, Divine magic is yellow. Duh.
>>24040717>>24044910I was checking to see if anyone had replied to my post at >24033080 (what do you think, BTW?), and I noticed some of the talk about your race, what if the "death breath" can temporarily mutate/corrupt elementals if it gets into their forms. Maybe it sends elementals berserk, allowing the Lungmarians to counter elemental summons, or maybe it acts more like steroids and just increases their power?
>>24065086I wish for a will to live
>>24065706>What's a good way of making divine power(magic from the gods) different from regular magic.Acts of the Divine aren't magic. When a wizard casts a lightning bolt they're channeling some energy or force to make it happen. When Zeus casts a lightning bolt there is no energy manipulation, he simply wills it into being.
>>24065152But what? You kind of cut off a little there.Okay I see what you're going with now. Not sure that I'll go with those, but thanks for the suggestion regardless. What have you head about Discworld? I don't think that I've watched the Corpse Bride. Or if I have it's been a while. What about funerals then, besides Chaos doing rowdy celebrations of the deceased's life?
>>24066534Im talking about Cleric magic. Priest and Paladins spells
>>24029505In the story I'm working on, all the races were created as collaborative efforts, since the gods are each tied to a specific element, and without combining with the god another element, or even two elements, the best the gods could do is an elemental or a divine servant, with traces of the other elements worked in because they use a base template, with some races having the two elements in rough balance, while in others one element is dominant over the other(s), representing which gods were most active in the process, the elements showing clear influence in the race's physiology and/or typical personalities. The elements are Light, Darkness, Fire, Earth, Water, and Wind. What are some ideas for what I can do for races here? I have the two-element races more or less figured out, like Elves being Light and Earth due to their long lives connection to nature, and ethereal looks that seem to glow so it's the three-element races I need help with, though I can't remember what I was doing for the Water and Earth race now that I think of it. For instance, a race for Light, Wind, and Darkness, someone else I asked suggested something wolf-based? I was thinking that the Wind, Water, and Darkness race might be something like Sirens, what do you think? Someone else suggested that a humanoid version of Carbuncles would work for the Fire/Light/Earth race, what do you say? My best idea for the Wind, Water, and Darkness was some race that inhabits underwater caves. I asked in the last thread, and all I got was that Humans being both Light and Darkness would be cool, but I was already planning on that. I was inspired to try again by all the conversation around >>24044910.
>>24065086I think that there’s actually a comic just like that.
>>24065706Divine magic doesn't come from the caster but from somewhere else. The heaven, the earth, nature.Or there is little indication that it is coming from anywhere at all, it just happens. The divine should in my opinion underlie all of existence, have direct access to the laws of physics and make things beyond human capability. If "regular magic" can be understood and comprehended, then divine magic can't. Maybe divine magic doesn't need to be "cast" at all but instead merely "happens" due to the practitioner knowing stuff and behaving correctly and doing the necessary prayers 5 times a day while facing the exact right direction and wearing the right talisman
>>24065152>You could have that, or you could also have them be separate but also have a sort of shared plane. That way you can have one purely be creation, one purely destruction, and some area that is shared.I was more trying to clarify what you were asking there. I'll think about it.Alright, those are good ideas, what about more abstract concepts? I suggested Time for Destruction in the last post because of Entropy for instance, and I think that Life for Creation and Death for Destruction are obvious, same for the Forge being Creation, what do you think? How did you design the runes? And what limits does it have in what it can do?
>>24067153Do you mean Eight Billion Genies?
>>24064709>>24064516I need some help. There are humans who are referred to as "The Fallen" (Need a better name for that)TLDR>Fought for Construct rights, lead into what amounted to a terrorist attack>When the ascension was done, these humans had their souls removed and placed into identical vessels that were designed to resemble Constructs as a form of humiliation and punishment. What's worse is that these vessels are actually more fragile and weaker than a human body, in contrast to the Construct's comparative physical hardiness. They're made of wood and hollow marble for petes sake.>Their memories were also fucked with. They can't remember ANYTHING besides their general opinions, facts, and the actions of others. But names, faces, locations, colors, sensations, voices? All gone.>They were also cast into the Abyss as well just to add injury to insult. There's more, but that's the essential information. I'm trying to make the design not exactly like the Constructs but I can't think of much that doesn't make them look awkward. I was considering making their arms and legs look really thin to hammer home that they're intentionally weak and unable to defend themselves, but it didn't look quite right. A Construct is on the left, an uncolored "Fallen" is on the right.
>>24065152I wonder how the Lungmarians themselves would feel about that name.>I assume that Light is not necessarily good, and Shadow is not necessarily evil?Correct.Okay, those are good ideas, but then that leaves Spring and Autumn. Wakefulness would then be Light. Hm, I'd suggest Truth and Lies for Light and Shadow, respectively, but that seems too on the nose. What about angels for each force?
>24067535Oops, meant to add that Light angels seem obvious, but I want to mix it up a bit, and similarly I want to make my Shadow angels more than just demons to demonstrate that Shadow isn’t evil all the time, while still making them more than angels with black wings and that’s it. I was thinking that Shadow halos could look like a black hole for instance. Do the Lungmarians believe in any angels or similar beings?>>24067328What if you cover them in patched-up cracks and other damage?
>>24067559Been planning to do that based on the individual. But anyways, here are all the known planes>The Sky. A series of beautiful islands of all kinds floating in an endless well, sky. The clouds are puffy as hell. An absolute paradise that overflows with seemingly boundless energy and life. Humanity used this world to develop an even greater civilization than before.>The Surface: Our world. Well, at least it used to be like our world, now it’s just abandoned. Sure, the environment has recovered, but any human settlements have turned into blank slates. And then there’s the machine.>The Abyss: How the fuck do I even describe this. It’s like a fusion of a megastructure and an ecosystem, with dozens, if not hundreds or even millions, of different types of structure and terrain all over the place, all lit in this murky yet oddly serene way. Filled with a ton of dangerous shit. Constructs and Fallen live here.OTHERS (That we know of)>The Dream: Completely different depending on who’s visiting, as it seems to manifest subconscious thoughts. Although in its natural state it’s just a blank slate. Literally an endless flat plain.>The Place: May or may not be the origin point of reality. Nobody knows for certain. It’s just there. There’s also another species that traveled to the Abyss but we’re not sure where they came from. They’re these plant people who dress like they’re in World War One. I think they might’ve come from the Sky but humanity is currently squatting in their place while they’re exploring other planes
>>24067205I'm thinking more like cleric powers or Soulslike Faith incantations when I'm talking divine magic. On a basis in order to get faith magic one not only has to have some minor predisposition to it but actively believe and practice a given god's scripute and rituals. The problem I'm facing is specific powers and abilities that a "cleric" would have that a wizard wouldn't. One that I can easily think of is channeling the divine power into items like weapons and rosaries for offense but that's the most unique thing I can think of.
Let's say a character steps into a representation of his own mind. How would you do it? And what writers have done this before?
>>24068622In Black Swan (not fantasy, but pretty close to it) they use mirrors. In Bleach (early volumes) they beat the fuck out of Ichigo and throw him in a pit until he confronts his inner world. In Inception they use dreams.Personally I guess I would use dreams.
I also like the way they did it in Fight Club where the representation of his own mind is an actual character
>>24068622Silent Hill(the game series) does it via Silent Hill(the town). Another dimension that reflects the visitor
>>24067328Shit I just got an idea.>Humanity's "Ascension" was also them leaving their bodies behind>The Fallen's punishment was being forced into a fully material form again
>>24068804>>24068918Thanks. I'm surprised how few novels try this. I wasn't even looking for fantasy specifically.
This miry Slough is such a place as cannot be mended; it is the descent whither the scum and filth that attends conviction for sin doth continually run, and therefore is it called the Slough of Despond: for still as the sinner is awakened about his lost condition, there ariseth in his soul many fears, and doubts, and discouraging apprehensions, which all of them get together, and settle in this place; and this is the reason of the badness of this ground.
Worldbuilding is ASS. >Hurr durrr look I made uh alphabet for muh ficshonul language!Characterbuiding is what you should be doing.
>>24069591RetardCharacterbuilding and worldbuilding can go hand in handYou think anyone would give a shit about jon snow if it wasnt for the surrounding world of asoiaf? You think Severian would be an intresting guy to follow if it wasnt for Urth?Characters ARE their world and the world IS the characters. Atleast in all the fantasy/scifi that is good and matters
>>24069591I already do both
How does having TWO moons affect your world? I have been conceptualizing my worldbuild to have TWO moons like masser and secunda in elder scrolls because the TWO moons are going to play a big role in religion, beliefs, and culture in there, however I still have no idea on what is the effect of having TWO moons orbiting around your planet do to your ecosystem and environment
>>24069957Yeah, that's cool and all but my world has THREE moons. No big deal. There are actually THREE moons plus one though, because one is an artifical moon that was created as a orbital mining laser to harvest resources from the asteroid belts but was turned on the planet during a heckin cataclysmic event and glassed an entire continent like the covenant did to Reach So there's actually FOUR moons because the survivors thousands of years later have no recollection of what the fourth actually isEach moon represents a different "virtue" that correlate most closely to the triforce peices, at least that's sort of where the inspiration came from. There is a similar to the zodiac signs or astrology where people born under different moons end up with different traits. So someone born under a full Red moon and a new Green moon (colors haven't been set, probably not gonna do the standard rgb) would be a strong but cowardly person, as he would be lacking in courage. There's tons of other personality traits and the phases matter, for example waning moons are more likely to be negative while waxing are positive- Full being balanced but could go either way. This means that a person who is born under 3 full moons is basically a hero or legend, since it's somewhat rare for them all to align that way. The kicker is this. The astrology, just like in irl life, is probably not real. There are many restrictions and excuses people come up with for why someone doesn't align with their birthmoons. For example, some believe that only legitimate children born from marriage are blessed with the traits, while the moons ignore bastards and such. Others believe that the traits are given at conception, so it's much harder to descern an exact phase-set for any given purpose. There are also those who take this to the ultimate extreme and worship the THREE moons. They're called Moonlighters and they gave a floating Cathedrals in the eastern lands called the "Moonlight Cathedral" (name pending) where many gather to worship the THREE moons. oh, and the fourth moon follows a sporadic and unpredictable orbit, often changing directions and remaining still. This is because the automated system onboard are fucking coo-coo after everyone fucking died, so the planetside people think that the FOURTH moon is the giver of beauty, since it's the most fleeting of the group of traits.I dunno how it would affect the environment at large or the oceans (oceans are a whole different thing anyways, something something locked away cosmic horrors drowned in a wall of water via the marriage of the sky and sea, who cares, I wont get to that till, like, book 5) but I DO know that one of my major stories is a myth or fairy tale that follows an ancient King as he travels to the moons to build a house for his daughter.
>>24070069Across his journey he meets, fights, allys with various people and groups. Like bandits, soldiers, animals that talk (there aren't actual talking animals in my setting, this is a fairy tale set IN the setting so the rules are different) various uniqe entities that help him cross the world and climb higher and higher, inevitably gaining wings from either helping or killing an eagle and flying to the moons. To build the house. He had been travling with the daughter the whole time but the twist is that she had actually been dead. She dies at the start of the story due to the Kings advancement into a new land to conquer. She died from touching poisons flowers while exploring and playing in a feild. The entire journey is his massive cope for not being able to protect her and the three moons, in this instance, represent a different part of him and his grief. The blue moon being the depression he feels as a father, the green being the way he honors her as a king, and the red being the way he rages as a warrior. The story becomes more and more skitzophrenic as it goes on, to the point where he is simultaneously performing two opposing actions, like sparing or killing the eagle for the wings, and being on each moon at the same time. He doesn't understand where the lines are anymore because his entire life has been upended by his loss. He's not going to the moons to build his daughter a house, but to bury her in a grave. The keeper of the blue moon helps him grieve, the keeper of the green helps him honor her, but the keeper of the red fights with him, and is inevitably killed by him, as he takes his shovel and starts digging the grave. It's unclear when exactly he began losing his mind, and each of the moons/parts of him all blend into and out of eachother (there is obviously sadness in his anger and stuff, but that's for youtube faggot video essayists to cover) but yeah. It's sadedgykino>ever since you were born, you were always ahead of me. Always running; Exploring; Everywhere we went. I was... always following you. But now... I... I don't know where to go.The king looked up, across the fire, where the image of the princess sat still; A sad smile on her face. She whispered words he couldn't hear- or, rather- couldn't bear to. In a blink she dissappeared, and left behind the velvet-shrouded corspe; covered, almost held, by the light of the moons
>>24029517>What other realms of existence, if any, exist in your setting, be they physical realms or the afterlife or spiritual realms, and can beings travel between them?Everything that is exists within the same 'reality' that follow the same set of rules with thousands of different variations as you move around. So one part of reality is just our own, another has magic and so on. There is an outside of reality which doesn't exist in any term possible and cannot be understood by those inside of reality.>How is the universe of your setting structured? Is it basically the same as our universe as we best understand it, or are there significant differences, and if so, what are they?Largely the same as our own, just seperated into their own areas with varying things to them.>If it’s possible to travel faster than light in your world, how does it work, and what are the risks? What about traveling forward or backwards in time, or to parallel timelines/alternate realities, assuming any exist (and if the latter do, how do they connect to the “main” universe)?FTL travel is possible through bending space which is just teleportation. It is impossible to move faster than light within reality. The risks are to do with bending space properly and energy expenditure, bending space itself without tools is low energy but basically impossible for anybody to do so tools have to be used, failure resulting in the teleportee being sliced in two, obliterated or being displaced within objects. Time travel does exist as for most time is linear but it doesn't affect anybody who is independent of time making time travel only a local event which can encompass massive regions of the universe so continuity remains.>Lastly, where do you look for inspiration for this kind of thing besides Norse mythology or picture related? What do you look for, what is your process, and what advice do you have for beginners?Video games, books, history and just a lot of thinking shit up when I'm taking a run. There's nothign wrong with just getting an idea and thinking about it and expanding everywhere and cutting it back down to size when you want to make it coherent.
I have a connection that relates to the realm question but it's a bit hard to parse. My world has "Epochs" for lack of a better world and it goes through quite a number of them, and is measured via "ascensions". The world typically has around 4 to 6 races on it, an Epoch begins when the races properly settle on it and ends when they leave, either by apocalypse or if they're able to prevent that ascension, which is really them going into a completely new realm to live in. (Age of Simar to the Fantasy)A bit of an explanation - long ago there used to be dwarves elves and other races, long before humans and the others. But one day they disappeared and left the world for the other races to inhabitant. What happened is that they all learned the truth and went to a new cosmology to live in and are waiting for the new groups of raves to meet them there..
>>24069957>ecosystem and environmentHuge tides. Tides can already be massive with just one, two moons in high tide plus a storm surge could have devastating effects on ports

What do you look for, what is your process, and what advice do you have for beginners?I use a lot of the Bible for reference, if you want some good world building or something out of this world turn to the Bible. Otherwise I’m a big fan of ancient cultures, their way of life is so foreign to ours finding a unique way of using something like that I find is an easy way to begin world building and as it grows you can add or take away imagination
>>24070095Enjoyed that, thank you!
So quick questionWhich world setting?Regular planet world of treesOrGiant space tree with life living in forests growing on the trunk
>>24071339Both?
>>24071339Second is more unique i guess
>>24071122Glad you liked it anon <3
>>24070893Depends on the size and distance of the moons, their relative distance to each other, the distance to the host planet, the speed at which they circle the planet, etc. Suitably positioned, two moons could balance out the tidal effect almost entirely.
Is a wish granting stone worth fighting a war over?
>>24073299People have fought wars over their uncle's inheritance and you think they wouldn't send commoners to their death for a fucking wish granting stone?
>>24073311But that happened centuries ago in the dark ages. Not in modern times with civilized people.
>>24073322And you think people change? The only thing that changed is that people are too comfortable to be persuaded into dying for their lords. All you have to do is have them come up with an excuse like weapons of mass destruction of whatever, they don't even have to be real.Throw in a false flag for extra patriotism and you've got your war ready to goUnless there's some device that makes war extremely improbable (like nukes, and knowing they're willing to use them). In that case they would still try through other means, most likely subversion and instigation of coups.
>>24029505Came up with autistic biology for goblins.>When a human dies, they becomes a spirit, they a mindless invisible flying sperm that can't interact with anyone>In deep forests, there are red ponds called "Hobponds">If a spirit happens to come across a Hobpond, the pond's water will transform the spirit into a slime>Slimes are mindless, and mostly harmless, they are like jellyfish that travel on land and will sting you if you touch them>Slimes smell dead bodies a thousand miles and travel toward them>When slime reaches a human corpse, it will consume and transform into a goblin>Goblins are semi-intelligent and intentionally kill men and feed their corpses to slimes in order to multiply>If a goblin is able to impregnate a human woman, the woman will give birth to a "mangoblin">Mangoblins are taller than humans, and stronger, but mentally challenged>if a mangoblin impregnates an elfwoman, she will die and give birth to a hobgobling>hobgoblins are even larger, and extremely smart>if hobgoblin dies, their body will transform into a new hobpondEach three goblins has a different nature.Base goblins are sadistic and bloodthirsty because they made of the evil from hobpondsIn contrast to mangoblins that actually have a kind natureHobgoblins are most more nuanced in their nature. So, the core premise of my story is, that the humans are using castrated mangoblins as slave labor, and goblins are liberating them.
>>24074424Why don't the humans just destroy all the Hobponds? And if the Hobgoblins aren't so bad, why are the Hobponds so evil?
>>24074965NTA but I guess it’s because of some primal instinct shit
>>24070095Wtf this is actually good
>>24073338>And you think people change? We would all be executed for heresy or something if they don't.
Tripuran politics is basically:>"Leftist" party of rich socialists, millionaire "professionals" (lawyers, doctors ), and intellectuals coexisting with gangsters and literal terrorists>"Conservative" party of fascist militias, crazy cult leaders, tech oligarchs, and retired military officersNeither is really in charge, so you have the worst of both. State controlled euthanasia, zero point zero fertility rates, stagflation, unemployment, constant insurgency in rural areas and crazy crime rates on one hand...and eugenics, evil megacorps, Scientology-On-Crack religions, and hideously evil secret police on the other.
So I am making a sci fi setting where AI does not exist except in very limited capacity.
>>24074965>Why don't the humans just destroy all the Hobponds? They can only be destroyed by throwing an elf into the pond, which will kill the elf.Thematically, it is about sacrifice.>And if the Hobgoblins aren't so bad, why are the Hobponds so evil? It's like a toxic shell they leave behind. Basically, the material bodies of hobgoblins are essentially corrupted elves because elves are supposed to be born out of fruits, not from women. So, when they die their their body melts and corrupts the soul.I'd also play win the idea of making hob ponds emit strong radiation, so every human that approaches it dies long before reach it. But the only problem is that, how would people know about hobpond if that was the case?
>>24075679How original.
I just finished up the second chapter of the fantasy story I’m writing about a Necromancer’s apprentice, if any of you gents are interested.Chapter 1https://pastebin.com/mF0J1p4JChapter 2https://pastebin.com/V50DuK3iAlso available to read on A03, Wattpad, etclinktree/BornUnderaBlackSunPicrel, some art I commissioned of one of the story’s chimeras. A cross between an alligator and a vulture
>>24076678Why those particular animals? And do you have any advice for one looking to create chimeras of their own?
>>24077113Well in my story, the most common types of magic are skinswitching, mixmaking, and beastbinding. Turning into animals, creating chimeras, and warging/creating an animal familiar. This is done because I liek animals and animal facts, and wanted to highlight new creatures instead of reusing monsters common to fantasy that have been done better to other people. But the Alligator-Vulture holds a special place in my heart because the vulture is my favorite animal, and this here is my setting’s equivalent of a dragon. Vulture’s have highly acidic projectile vomit they can vomit as a defense mechanism (that also helps break down their prey), have wings, and (turkey vultures) are very smart and have a great sense of smell. Give all of these features to a large reptile like a gator and boom, dragon!
>>24077812I would love to hear more about your magic system please. And what are some other chimeras that you particularly like?
>>24079164Well there are two separate kinds of magic, the Twelve Paths and the Beastly Arts. The Beastly Arts is the common magic that all men possess. When entering adolescence, everyone gets a beastly art. Skinswitching, Beastbinding, and Mixmaking are the common arts.>skinswitchers can turn into an animal or take on certain aspects of animals. This ranges from literally growing animal parts to merely growing or reducing their size and mass. A experienced insect skinswitcher could do anything from turn into a bug, gain bug carapace, shrink his human form down to the mass of a bug, grow insect wings, grow multiple arms, etc. A skinswitcher has no control over what animal he turns into, and cannot change into more than one.>Mixmakers can add and mix animal dna to a creature. Turn a vulture into a vulture alligator by holding the dna of an alligator in his hand. So get a gator tooth, hold it while touching the vulture, and you can begin adding parts of the alligator to the vulture. Experienced mixmakers could create a chimera with multiple heads and limbs, a more unnatural grafting than mixing. And the more experienced can add more and more animals together. Mixmakers have no magic control over their creations, and will either mixmake an animal that they’ve trained well like a dog, or add traces of dog into their mix for intelligence and obedience. Mixmakers can only mixmake one creature at a time, and when they try to do another the former beast will begin to change back to its original form (unless it’s dead). It’s common for Mixmakers to create imitation animals: raise a common farm animal, then mixmake it into a nearly perfect tiger, then butcher it and bam, perfect tiger pelt to sell.>beastbinders can bind an animal to their will and control it, and with experience see through it eyes and use its senses. Beastbound animals from experienced beastbinders rapidly gain intelligence that is a reflection of the beastbinder. Then there are three rarer arts, mixes of the others. The ability to add animal dna and parts to a skinswitcher, the ability to bind a skinswitcher, and the ability to bind a mixmade hybrid. And then there’s a seventh gift, so rare it’s legendary: soulforging, the ability to kill others and take their abilities and place them into inanimate objects. This is a contrast to the second ability all users of the beastly arts have: the ability to kill and eat the flesh of another to take their power. The Twelve Paths is twelve different elements. Fire, water, earth, wind, wood, metal, night, day, life, death, time, and distance. Practitioners of the Twelve Paths each have one of these elements, and at this time I cannot reveal how they get them and where they come from, but that will be appearing in future chapters.
>>24079409>The Twelve Paths is twelve different elements. Fire, water, earth, wind, wood, metal, night, day, life, death, time, and distance. My fantasyscifi world has custom back sheaths that are like bird claws that grip the sword. When the hilt is grabbed and pressure applied to a button on the chest, the talons open and a burst of energy, probably hydraulic, launches the sword from the resting position. It's very difficult to master and easy to fuck up, but if played correctly, the swordsmen can begin a fight with an inital swing that's several times faster than a human would regularly be able to swing a swordPretty neat, huh?
Is gangster rule analogous to feudalism? The central democratically elected government is falling apart due to corruption and financial problems.
>>24080294You copied that from MGR.
I'm writing a Cyberpunk dystopia where a complete failure of the government due to financial crisis*, sociological crisis** and losing a major war allowed citizen's organizations to fill the gap.>Police has become a privatized organization because government can't pay for them. This has led to great improvement in law enforcement because police unions and contracts don't protect bad cops anymore.>Many big name local magnates have made their own private armies that are personally loyal to them. Some of these paramilitaries are so powerful that the government can't take them on anymore.>Money waste has dropped because the government has agreed to reduce taxes to prevent rich people from just leaving the country.>All society has now congregated in big cities where the corporations and their armies can provide safety. The average city looks like Singapore now. Democracy is still technically there, but it has no real power. *all the money was embezzled or wasted**South Africa level racial strife
>>24066906>But what? You kind of cut off a little there.Oh yeah sorry. I was going to say they'd have to release it eventually but it'd be a neat little trick.I just heard of Discworld through Pratchett quotes. Stuff like the boots quote. As for funerals, there's a thing done in some places called sky burials. The Zoroastrians and Tibetans do it, they basically place a body out for vultures to eat. That might be a neat idea for Chaos. For order, you could have something like funeral chants.>>24065990>>24033080I think it's a neat idea. As for spheres of influence, a thought I had is how do they deal with overlaps? I was thinking, would volcanoes be Fire or Earth domain? Since they are hot like fire, but they clearly come from the earth. Or weather, rain and storms are all caused by a combination of evaporated water and air. I think as spheres of influence you could even have elemental lords make agreements to share domains, or fight over the domains. That's a neat idea with the elementals. I was thinking it naturally degrades the elementals (being radiation vs natural elements). However through a complicated process, an elemental can be made mutated with the radioactive dust to be more powerful.>>24067249Abstract concepts are a bit hard. I'm more of a tangible dude. You could have Sex be Creation since it makes babies, Evolution can be Creation as well, since evolution is just animals reproducing over a long as fuck period. Extinction could be Destruction, and could be a constant rival of evolution. Strife and Discord as well, since those are by nature things that destroy the cohesion of a greater whole.Runes are something I haven't written much on- I honestly just based it off a Warcraft fanfiction I read. Runes are used for multiple purposes- sometimes they're used to enchant gear, other times they're used to activate a spell at a later time. The activated spell is specifically a glyph. As for limits, they're limited by the power of the caster, so powerful runes tend to be rarer.I went with more a heavy and thick rhinoceros like skin for the aberrant lungmarians. They have scutes rather than scales, making them heavily armoured as well. I wanted some sort of drawback for them that isn't related to their deathbreath, as the current monarch chose not to make himself an aberrant for whatever reason. I was thinking something like they have a burning desire and hunger for battle that needs to be sated constantly, or dealt with through them doing other things.I also needed a symbol for a clan. I've decided the uniter clan will be known as the "Ten Thousand Skills" clan, but I needed a symbol for it besides the Chinese word for "ten thousand">>24067535I wanted them to enjoy it. Their natural home was quite rough, and they have a tradition of naming people fearsome names to scare off dangers. Names like Steelhoof, Shatterskull, Goretail, Deathhorn, etc. They also literally translate their names into the human language.
>>24067535(cont.)Spring and Autumn could be seen as "neutral" domains. Or perhaps they are not considered their own seasons for the purposes of Light and Shadow. For example in Persephone's myth, she sometimes has to stay for 6 months in the underworld. You could have Shadow consider one half of the year to be theirs and Light the other half.Angels for each force, you could get inspired by link: https://www.deviantart.com/scythemantis/art/Ghosts-97729763for dark angels. You could also take inspiration Diablo III's Reapers for shadow angels. Light angels can be your stereotypical ones, i.e. yellow light, white wings, halo, etc.
>>24080383I've never played it, but sure I guessDont care if it's been done beforeIt's cool
>>24075679>So I am making a sci fi setting where AI does not exist except in very limited capacity. And what exactly is the significance of that in connection to the rest of the setting?
>>24080362Not really. There are some similarities but I can find too many differences. First of all feudal lords responded to a centralized power. Mafias tend to be individual cells. Vassals did not own land, meanwhile the mafia doesn’t have any power over peoples property and if they want some land they have to fight to steal it. Generally the mafia doesn’t demand a militia like service from people. They have their own enforcers. More often than not the mafia doesn’t even extort money from everyone. They demand money from specific individuals and businesses
Start with qualia, what is feeling
>>24075679That's just Dune/Warhammer 40k,
>>24080957Okay, thanks for clearing that up.I do recommend it, it strikes a good balance between humor and seriousness, and has some neat twists on existing tropes. Up for any other recommendations? So basically just having nature scatter the body around randomly? That could work, though I should probably look into other options as well, a few options for sects to choose from. What about cremating them and using the ash in a glass sculpture? So they would just chant in certain ways? I'd need more information there.
>>24075732What’s so special about elves that they need to be sacrificed to destroy one? And why do humans even become spirits like that at all? Oh, and what if a human has a child with an elf?
>>24080874>Money waste has dropped because the government has agreed to reduce taxes to prevent rich people from just leaving the country. So people's money is totally not wasted sitting in the rich people's bank account?
>>24083023Of course not, they don't draw taxes. And besides, who puts money in bank accounts these days? It's all in stocks and investments.
>>24080874Anyways, these private citizens have grown sick of a government that can't handle their money nor protect them. They're planning to overthrow it. They will arrange a transport and logistics strike, make all the railroads and planes and ships stop moving. This will make prices skyrocket and send people to the streets. The government will be forced to send the army to clear the streets and work the railroads. But what the politicians don't know is that the generals have already been persuaded to join the citizens. And the moment the President tries to use force to stop the strike.......The military will overthrow him to protect democracy, take over, and fix the country. Naturally, elections and democratic rights will have to be suspended for a few years until the country is fixed. And even when they return, the only people that will be allowed to vote are property owners. People who have their own land, houses, or other forms of investment into the running of the country. And unions and other leftist institutions will be abolished and their members wiped out.
Can genetic engineering make incest less dangerous?
>>24083657Genetic engineering could make incest desirable
>>24083659Sweet. That means I can make incest a common cultural tradition in my Cyberpunk world.
>>24083663I would create an aristocracy of masterfully inbred CEOs who keep incest drugs to themselves but that's just me
>>24083773They may be inbred, but expensive genemods have made them stronger and fitter than poor people. Compared to the average working class man, the average rich man is Captain America.
However, mother-son relationships are still banned because a prophecy says that the child of a mother and her son would be invincible.
>>24082969Elfs are born from fruit trees called "elf trees", those trees collect souls much the hobponds, and once they reach 1000 spirit they will drop fruit from an elf.So, elves are manifestations of nature and purity.>And why do humans even become spirits like that at all?Spirits themselves are neutral, it is the hobpond that corrupts them.>Oh, and what if a human has a child with an elf?I reckon the half-elfs are done to death, so I had this idea that humans can't impregnate elf or vice versa. Only reason why mangoblins can is because they have fraction elf DNA from their goblin father's hobpond
I finally did it. I stopped racefagging. Only humans, and intelligent monsters can only be found in the mythic underworld. I am finally freed from elfs, dwarves, and all the rest. They have been banished to hell/hades/naraka/tir na nog/etc and will never ever cause problems for my worldbuilding again. I feel free now.
Incest has many advantages in my Cyberpunk world:>It allows family property to stay within the family> It keeps their expensive genemods from being diluted by inferior blood>It keeps the mating pool open for less rich people, because most rich scions are satisfied with screwing their sisters and cousins>And besides, it creeps the normies out, allowing the elites to keep them submissive.
Do you bother with maps? If so, when do you create one? At the start, or in the middle? What is your methodology? How important are maps?
>>24080957Yeah, things get difficult when you get more abstract, hence why I'm asking for help. Do you have any methods/techniques to use when you're stuck on this kind of thing, or places I can look to for more abstract ideas on this kind of thing if you have trouble with it too? Those are ideas, thanks. Now I just to find an aspect or two that makes it clear that Destruction is a natural part of the world and not all bad. Maybe Renewal, clearing things away so that new things can come into being?Do you remember the name of that fanfic? Here's an idea, what if their scutes are tougher, but heavier, reducing their speed?Maybe a collection of ten markings arranged in a certain way, which could be explained as a simplification of another, more complex symbol?
>>24084611Hit the button sooner than I meant to, I was also going to ask if you had any thoughts on Creation or Destruction dragons. Like, I'm thinking that Destruction dragons could have a breath attack that spits out a mini-black hole, one that lasts for a few seconds, but what about Creation dragons? Seeds that s[out restraining vines seems a little narrow in focus, but I can't think of anything else.
>>24029505Digging up my old maps makes me happy for some reason
>Because real women are needed for work, childbirth is now outsourced to private companies.>Artificial wombs now produce up to 80% of all children.>Thanks to high prices, this means only middle class and above can afford kids.>The working and lower classes either have to depend on human mothers or not have children. This is considered a good thing because it keeps people from having more kids than they can afford.
>>24085385If you're going to go that far why not just having state owned children? Artificial wombs would be a communist's dreamEndless waves of genetically engineered, castrated eunuchs who only work with an oligarchy owning the workers. Communist paradise
>>24080957Glad to hear that they like it.>>24080967That's an idea for the seasons, thanks!Yikes. I think I'll stick to Diablo inspirations, but thanks for the suggestion. I have a headache, so I might not be asking this well, but I saw another anon you're talking to, what do you think on Light or Darkness faiths?
>>24085461Because the government doesn't want any. It's a capitalist oligarchy, not a communist state.
>>24083504>It's all in stocks and investments.Ah, yes, the clever american invention of "I'll buy my billion-dollar company's stocks for $1 billion, so its now valued $2 billion", which totally benefits the economy.
>>24085385>Having children is now seen as very lower class, practically obscene. >Comedy shows regularly mock people with natural families in much the same way our comedy shows mock religious bigots>Despite all this, population is high and concentrated.>Cities have populations of 10-20 Million each, and the rural population is less than 10% of the whole.>Food production is only barely enough to be sustainable. Most calories are imported from foreign countries...even enemy countries.>But since said foreign countries are dependent on the cities for advanced tech and services, the balance of trade is biased towards the cities.
Since it's possible to create androids that are creepily realistic, humans in my world are slowly being replaced.>The beginning of this trend was when the birthrate crash forced companies to look elsewhere for labor.>Robots were supposed to be a temporary cure until births picked back up.>But what nobody expected was that robots would gain higher intellect. >Now robots are being mass produced at terrifying rates even as the human population keeps falling.>The point where robots would surpass humans was passed decades ago.Humanity is going extinct. It has been replaced by a superior race.
>>24086066>superiorNiggas be runnin on AAA batteries and sayin theyre "superior" lmao
>>24086066So, what is the point? That being a soulless wagecuck is the best?
>>24086310The point is that I love robot girls, and support Robot Replacement Theory.
BTW, another thing that makes these robots so dangerous is their nanomachine wombs. These robots can actually GIVE BIRTH.
>>24086524>>24086365The best of stories can come from the obvious of an author's fetishs.
How important are maps when worldbuilding?
>>24082787I kind of have a lot on my plate that I want to read already. I'll look into Discworld when I get the chance though. As for other sects, my coworker from another culture mentioned they cremated their grandfather, kept the ashes for a year, then scattered them to the winds. That might be a neat Chaos thing. Order could do the glass sculpture like you mentioned.Funeral chants can be chanting various things. Could be chanting things like, "Bless his soul, may he pass in peace, may his soul be welcomed in the afterlife", etc. or it could be a recollection of their life's deeds "She helped defeat Big Bad Vampire, she helped rebuild the towns". You could also have the chants be in another language that only priests or clerics of the gods use. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJwuNMv4i6M>>24084611I like the idea of the scutes slowing them down. I did intend them to be more like rhinos than horses, so them being slower makes good sense to me. I also intended them to require more food to upkeep due to being larger and heavier. That markings idea is good. I think I'll use just 2 together though, the 2 Oracle Bone Script words for "5000" together. The fanfic is called Reincarnation. It's a Warcraft III one. Be warned it does use some modern terminology and values like bisexuality and polyamory is not frowned upon. I honestly use ChatGPT for some ideas and kind of leap off that for some other new ideas. As for things related to destruction that are not evil, Decay is often seen as evil, but it's a necessary part of nature as without decay, old nutrients would never be recycled. Forest fires are sometimes necessary as well, as some trees release their seeds only after a fire. Hunting and predation can be naturally "good" Destruction aspects- if there was no hunting or predation, ecosystems would be really messed up.As for Dragons, you could have Creation shoot a flechette storm, since flechettes are a manmade object. Could also be swarms of bees or hornets. Destruction's idea of a black hole is good, an idea I had is acid.>>24085481Yeah that deviantart pic of the angel gave me nightmares as a kid. As for Shadow vs Light faiths, Shadow could have trials for new recruits involve staying in the dark for several days, while Light has recruits stare at the sun. The Light could have some healing methods to restore the eyesight of those who go blind. For drawbacks to the mutants, I was thinking of they are also modified with a constant burning desire for bloodshed, bloodshed that they find pleasurable and enjoyable. It's one they must tame with some sort of purpose. They tend to unnerve their allies in battle, and as a result few voluntarily become mutants.
>>24087216Also I realize piebaldness is actually a lack of pigmentation in some areas. So I think I'll have it instead be white patches instead of mixed colors.Do you guys also think red eyes is too cliche in representing them being bloodthirsty?
What you guys think about my world building:>All of humanity lives in a "small" kingdom that has like 4-5 million people>Humanity so far has survived a lot of apolyptic scenarios that killed millions>last one happened like 700 years ago>the main kingdom is ruled by a dynasty of magical people, mostly women>only rich people, nobility and royal families have a deeper magical power. Poor people often times don't recieve "the gift" or not have it on their genetics
>>24029505I can't bother to do world building like it's D&D. I have a general idea, but i let it come out in the writing rather than designing everything. May be a few things are decided ahead of time, but not everything. I don't even write anything like D&D.
>>24087864It's an okay start but you should ask yourself some bigger questions>what's the world like outside of that kingdom?>what were and what caused the apocalypses>is there class tension in the kingdom? (This is incredibly fucking boring, if yes, btw)>can I get a magic gf?
>>24087945>>what's the world like outside of that kingdom? In the north, there's cold mountain with some monsters, far north there's a black desert with the most dangerous monsters, in the west there's as incredible large forest with giant trees and monsters. The east is safer because you can travel to some watchtowers and bastions that humanity has build, and in the south there's the sea.>>what were and what caused the apocalypsesI have think about some. The furthest back in the past timeline goes, where the first king became a ruler, it was already a post-apocalyptic world. Because there was a world war in the old world that caused almost the end of humanity, and the first king established his kingdom with the remaining humans. After it, there was two other apocalypsis scenarios that killed millions and destroyed a lot of progress humanity made.>>is there class tension in the kingdom? (This is incredibly fucking boring, if yes, btw)Yes, there is, but poor people can't do much about it. The only that cares about them is the female MC>>can I get a magic gf?Yes, you can..
>>24080957>>24087216Well, I was thinking more in terms of ones that would fall solidly into one element over the other, like Fire getting the Sun/Day, but a few combination ones like Volcanoes being both Fire and Earth could work.I was thinking that in my setting there would be a division between normal elements and angels of an elemental force. The former are usually non-sapient, and either roam the mortal realm or hang out in the plane of their element, the latter being more common. The latter are a refinement, based on the template that the gods left behind of their own servants before they died or vanished. The former are obviously made completely of their associated substance, the former were made to more closely resemble mortals, even able to pass as one briefly with deliberately effort, but with their elemental nature apparent. For example, an angel of Fire would have wings of flames, or at least ones that look like flame, like a phoenix, a flaming halo over their head, and eyes that seem to burn. Do you have any ideas on other ways that the elements can make their mark on my angels? I was thinking tattoo-like markings on their skin, ones that shine with their element's power, but what else is there besides the occasional feature from a beast or mythical creature associated with said element, like the aforementioned association of phoenixes and Fire?Another reason I was asking for ideas on domains is because I was trying to further define what both afterlives for each element are like, what rewards and punishments that souls receive in each one. Make sense?
>>24086524Can robots do incest?
>>24087216Glad to help! Maybe the scutes also make wearing clothes more annoying? What does that look like, or have you not designed it yet? Do you have any advice on designing the physical shapes of such runes/symbols, or do you prefer to leave it more vague? Thanks.Do you have any advice for using ChatGPT? Because at this point I might try it myself.Maybe I could have multiple options for each kind of dragon. That's a thought. And thanks for the acid suggestion. What about how they'd look, do you have any thoughts there? I was thinking something along the lines of Destruction dragons having more spikes and angular looks to them versus Creation dragons being smoother, does that make sense to you?
>>24088105Of course they can. But their real purpose is to be concubines for lonely male teenagers.
>>24086365But robots will never know love or understand your feelings, and them taking over would mean you and your fetish disappear from the world. Is that what you want?
>>24088583Feelings? Love? What am I, a teen girl?I just find robot waifus sexy, and think capitalism should survive past the end of the human race.
>Trying to come up with a fictional race that sort of resembles an elf>They're supposed to be genetically modified post-humans created by an eldritch overlord> "yeah, this sketch represents it well">Friend says it reminds him of the dark elves from Thor: the dark world>It's trueI hate when this happens
>>24088786hey you triedthat's all that mattersYou can always change the design a little. Or just embrace the design as is. So what if it looks like elves from Thor: The Dark World?
>>24088647>think capitalism should survive past the end of the human raceBut it won't, because machines have nothing they want, no need for money, and they can't understand the concept of sexuality. This is what porn does to a man's brain.
>>24088824Bruh, do you think machines don't run on fuel? Don't need maintenance?
>>24087216Oh, I feel you there. What are some of the other things that you're interested in reading? Thanks! What culture is that, if that's not too much to ask? Thanks for clearing that up. And quick question, do you have any thoughts on rituals to be done at a child's birth, or just after it, besides copying Christian baptisms? I was thinking that Chaos sects may recite a poem they wrote for the occasion or something similar, while the Order faith might do another chant meant to help the infant connect to the order of the world or something along those lines.
Can a Singapore style corporate nationalist government be successfully implemented on a large scale?
What exactly do you guys use your worlds for? Are you writing books, or is it just a hobby? I find myself wanting to worldbuild just for the sake of it really, I'm finding that the higher the expectations I put on what I'm trying to do the less enjoyable it is.Is it really acceptable to just create for the sake of creating, without the intention to write a book or do anything WITH it?
>>24088865They'd maintain themselves as naturally as we breathe. It wouldn't be a subject of commerce or even active consideration. Exchanging superfluous tokens over basic operations would make no sense.

Any other thoughts on the faiths? I was thinking weddings for the Light faith would always take place during the day/morning, and in the evening for the Shadow faiths, and funerals in the very early morning for the Shadow faith and in the evening/around or after sunset for the Light faith, what do you think about that or the rituals that might be involved?>>24087265It can be a little cliche, yeah. If they're just predisposed to it more instead of it being all members of the group, it's less of a stretch. After all, humans have variations in eye colors, why not your race, even with the mutation thrown into things? Or maybe they only get it when actively engaging in their desire for bloodshed.
Japan diverged from our timeline in the 16th century, when a clan of Oni were attracted by the blood of a battle and decided to hire themselves out to human nobles.>By the mid-16th century, there were nearly 100 Oni mercenaries serving human Daimyo.>Some even became Samurai. One of the best things about them was that they had no political ambitions.>By the late 16th century, the warring was over and Oni had started siring entire clans. >At this point, terrified of the idea of Oni replacing human nobles, the outside world started to intervene.By the 18th century, most of the Oni had been killed off. What are the implications of trains in a medieval fantasy world?Would horses become obsolete? Would it increase miscegenation by allowing many people (not just an occasional adventurer) to reach different places and interact with different cultures? Would it encourage more forms of industrialization?
>>24093191>Would horses become obsolete?Do automobiles exist? Is this some comprehensive mass transit system? If “no” to both why would horses be obsolete? People would still need to get places the trains don’t go. > Would it increase miscegenation by allowing many people (not just an occasional adventurer) to reach different places and interact with different cultures?I don’t think you understand trains. They don’t magically appear anywhere/everywhere just because (well, maybe they do in your setting). People have to build them, at considerable cost and effort, and so they’re not going to build them somewhere there isn’t a demonstrated need for them. They’ll connect big cities. Adventurers can still go off and explore nowhere to their heart’s content. Hell, “nowhere” might just be the places between stops that nobody bothers with. These days we call that “flyover country.” >Would it encourage more forms of industrialization?Certainly. You do recognize that there would have been a bit of industrialization to get to the point of developing railroads, right?
>>24093345Excuse me, I meant (mostly) magical trains. You'd still need to build the carriages and rails, but it would move with magic. For the miscegenation part, we are used to seeing adventurers travelling naturally, but not commonfolk. They don't have the time and resources and strenght to relocate as they wish. If magical trains existed, wouldn't this allow them to migrate more easily, looking for a better life? (Let's assume the tracks are easy to build and the tickets are cheap). And for the industrialization, the trains don't use engines, so there would be no developments in that regard. But I thought that maybe the idea of a train in people's minds would unlock a new perspective for them, that they should put more effort into creating useful things to automate tasks in a larger scale, leading to industrialization.
