Speaking of Machiavelli and Luther, Niccolò had really dropped the ball on that one. He spend so much time drooling over Alexander VI, Cesare Borgia and Julius II without realizing that in their desire "to Seize Italy and to Free Her from the Barbarians" they've basically destroyed the moral authority of the Holy See and opened the path for people like Luther. They've added Romagna to the Papal States for ~300 years and lost the entirety of Northern Europe forever, not something I would call particularly wise and farsighted.
