What the fuck happened to Stormlight archive? This was unironically the worst book I've read in the last decade
It always sucked anon (see pic). It just sucks so bad now that you can't delude yourself anymore into thinking it's good.
He was never GRRM but I swear his prose was better than this a few years ago
>>24090928>"No," Kaladin said. "I'm his therapist".Oh my god. It's literally like he's writing a NOVEL with lines designed for applause breaks in the cinema. I've sincerely never seen anything like this before. How much further can the MCUfication of genre slop go?
>>24090928GRRM's prose isn't very good, anon. If you want spec fiction with good prose, go for Kazuo Ishiguro, Gene Wolfe, or Guy Gavriel Kay.But yes, Sanderson has fed his previous novels into a LLM, gives it an outline, and sends the result to publisher.
>>24090921I enjoyed it very much, very happy with the ending and the ramifications it will have on the Cosmere. Yes, Sanderkek was better off using gay people as a joke where Kaladin thinks they’re weird and Sigzil is annoyed they won’t fill out the proper paperwork for being gay. Yes, Rlain and Renarin were both ruined by fanfiction writing. No I don’t care about the Azish paperwork tranny throwaway character or the Reshi Isles tranny throwaway character.Sanderkek still clearly has a preference for straight ships and Syladin was the best part of the book, aside from RETRIBUTION KILLING HOID MID-JAPE, FUCK YOU YOU STUPID RAT
>>24090966>one of Dalinar's final visions as his soul faded away was his autistic son sucking on shellcockNobody deserves this, not even a war criminal
>>24090944>But yes, Sanderson has fed his previous novels into a LLM, gives it an outline, and sends the result to publisher.I sincerely doubt this. Sanderson has the guilty Mormon work ethic and would almost certainly feel that choosing the path of least resistance would be lazy and evil. I am quite confident that he painstakingly writes every awful, shitty word himself.
>>24090921I stopped reading Stormlight after book 2. The problem with Sanderson's autistic lore-spam is that you eventually just give up on keeping up with it because no one has that kind of time unless you're an autistic 15 year old
>>24090944Kay? Are you high? GRRM is to Kay as a professor is to a second grader. t. just finished reading fionavar tapestry
>>24090928>>24090921
>>24091654Is that real?
>>24091655yep
>>24091684p.1256... Good god...
>>24091687Bro. Imagine reading a book series like, 5 or 6 times as long as War and Peace and the writing quality is about the same as what you'd expect from an especially poor Star Wars EU novel. Are epic fantasy fans mentally defective or just masochistic? Why do they do this to themselves?
>>24091684>>24091687Now with the worst part highlighted for your reading pleasure
>>24091709>insinuating "Ishar moved with a crash of speed. A pop, and a rush, and suddenly he was there..." is betterAre you going to read the 6th one when it comes out?
>>24091729The I'M HIS THERAPIST part is what totally destroyed the tension in this chapter, nothing else stacks upBook 6 is a decade away and I've finally decided Sanderson's not going to get any better, so no
>>24091740
>>24091702The only explanation is that they form a parasocial relationship with the characters.
Reading mistborn was one of the most spiritually disgusting experiences I have ever had . I could feel a mucus covering me head to toe , horrifying to peak into certain minds for the barreness they might contain . Maybe I'm a little pretentious yes
I'm an ESL and I listened to Mistborn 1 and Stormlight Archives 1-2 to train my audio-comprehension skill. Now I'm listening to The Oathbringer in German for the same reason. As I heard there will be a kino battle at the end of the book, but I'm not going to continue with The Rhythm of War, considering that it is just an OK series (which is going to deteriorate) and there are much more interesting series.
>>24090921I get it, It's bad because redditors like it right?. We contrarians need to stay consistent.
>>24091878Anon, I'm sorry, but if you cannot discern that this passage >>24091740is bad writing, I seriously question whether you have actually read any books in your life.
>>24091819While i agree it's turning to shit, what are those "much more interesting series" you're thinking of? Everything nowadays in fantasy seems to be awful YA romance with an ethnic coat of paint.
>>24090926Nah, i've just reread some of the WoK and outside Shallan who is just cringe by nature it was written way fucking better.
>>24091887Regarding German I'm going to listen to works of Bernhard Hennen and Walter Moers.
>>24090921I like reading Sanderson because, as a female assigned male at birth, he makes me feel like anything is possible. We can be who we want to be. You should let me have access to your children.
>>24091819Don't listen to it Bulgarian / Filipino / Argentinbro .. This type of content (for it cannot be called literature) , will literally eat your brain , psychrosis
>>24091918That's right sister, Stormlight is our series
>"No...."said kaladin. "I'M his therapist."LOL SERIOUSLY? this is what the best american writer alive can write?
>>24090926>>24090928>>24091740>>24091989Seven years ago I dropped the first book in this series when I got to a part where some "suave" guy was hitting on a girl in a library by standing on a desk and making a scene. Never felt more embarrassment reading a book. Big virgin vibes. After reading these excerpts I went to see what fans are saying and it seems pretty divided. I just hope the people who this book turned off realize it was trash from the start. It reminds me of the Ready Play Two backlash. Sure, it worse, but the first book was never good to begin with.
>>24090921I read my first Sanderson book last month. It was so bad, I'm now reading Terry Brooks's "Heritage of Shannara" series to cleanse my palette.
>>24090921His original editor retired after the 3rd book
>>24090926my family told me this guy was a great writer what the fuck is this shit?this seems like schizo babble
>>24092407Most fantasy is read by people that mindlessly consume schlock like day time television and Marvel movies, but feel like they're expanding their minds when they read a fantasy book. Despite the fact that what they read is pure nonsense, they delude themselves into thinking that they are intellectuals by doing the basic human function of reading.
>>24092013He's not the best American writer, just the most popular
Okay but why did it seem like Taravango wanted to fuck Dalinar
>>24093475He basically said "oooo my ultimate NEMESIS Dalinarrrrr!" At one point. Like, doesn't a shard have higher causes. I think thats Brandon's point - that the shards embodiment are still reflective of the human behind them but it falls flat
>>24090926you wanna know what this shit reads like?an EA game
>>24090944>GRRM's prose isn't very good, anon. It's subjective. I'm very fond of GRRM's prose, it's dinstinctive and enjoyable to read.
>>24090944>>24093574The beginning of GRRM's series is wonderfully written, when they are beyond the wall
there are so many better fantasy novels/series out there than this fucking trash. the only reason this dude is even discussed is because of recency bias and the gradual decline in literary standards. if you're a 27 year old zillenial manchild who thinks in terms of video games and has never read a book by an actual author who had some life experince and wasn't an absolute autist then Stormlight must read like Dostoevsky but to anyone who actually reads it is complete ass. For non-autist fantasy, here's some recommendations: >Lyonesse by Jack Vance >Liveship Traders/Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb>Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin>Osten Ard series by Tad Williams >Patricia A. McKillip novels>Tales of the Flat Earth by Tanith Lee>Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay >The Dragon Waiting by John M. Ford >Little, Big and Ka by John Crowley>Wars of Light and Shadow, To Ride Hell's Chasm, and the Master of Whitestorm by Janny Wurts >The Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham>The World of Five Gods and Penric & Desdemona series by Lois McMaster Bujold >Fortress and The Dreaming Tree by CJ Cherryh>New Crobuzon series by China Mieville>Virinconium by M. John Harrison And I could go on. If you want to read fantasy, fine. But don't read sloppa.
>>24093619Have you read this?
>>24093628yes, forgot to mention Gormenghast. The first two books are absolute masterpieces.
>>24090921And rhythm of war wasn’t?
>>24093619Don't forget this one.
>>24090973No fucking way is that real. I don’t believe this book is that much of a shitpost
>>24090921Yeah the amount of reddit in this book was atrocious. There was always weird stuff in the other books, but this one was fantastically gay, especially the therapy stuff. The gay interspecies romance was weird, the therapy stuff was dumb, Dalinar's arc was atrocious etc. The science stuff was also retarded. The characters randomly saying "erm, yeah, this is science" was awfulThe only scene that I really liked was Taravangien raping Jasnah in their debate about whether Fen should leave the coalition
>>24093901>The only scene that I really liked was Taravangien raping Jasnah in their debate about whether Fen should leave the coalitionThis felt so weird and forced. Sanderson can't really write dialogue among two smart people.Like, you expect the debate between the smartest person and a god to be more than vaush-destiny debate quality
"Taravangian!" Wit said, spinning around and putting his hands to the side in an innocent posture. "Have I told you about the time I--"The god vaporized Wit in a wave of red mist.
>>24093628>>24093634Are you faggots trolling? Gormenghast is shit. "nothing happens but people have funny names teehee" the book.
>>24094448>Gormenghast is shit
>>24090966If I bother with Part 2 it'll be entirely for Taravangian. Moash and Skibidi the Toilet were dogshit villains but the big guy remains pure kino.
>>24094760What the fuck was the point of hyping up El so much only for him to do literally nothing?
>>24094448holy filtered go read some more sanderslop, chud, it sounds more your speed
>>24094201The one laugh I actually got out of the book.
>>24090928what the fuck...?
>>24090926oh, so that's how he writes so many booksthat'll do it
>>24093136it's some kind of skill what they do, how they get through it all. some of them are here
>>24091684jesusI only read the first mistborneit was alright. I expected a competent young adult fantasy novel and that's what I gotit wasn't this marvel cinematic universe bullshit
>>24090928>>24090944>But yes, Sanderson has fed his previous novels into a LLM, gives it an outline, and sends the result to publisher.>>24091065>I sincerely doubt this. Sanderson has the guilty Mormon work ethic and would almost certainly feel that choosing the path of least resistance would be lazy and evil. I am quite confident that he painstakingly writes every awful, shitty word himself.are you sure? to be fair if it is him it wouldn't take long to write like this, he could churn out tens of thousands of words a day especially with staff editors which i'm sure he has
Is it just me or is Sanderson actually getting worse? It might just be bias since he's also becoming more and more of an insufferable libtard with obnoxious prog-virtue signalling on every page, but I am convinced that even divorced from that he has actually gotten less competent, his plotting has become worse and his characters have become less coherent. Way of Kings wasn't high art but it had some actual moments in it that were really cool, the despair and hellish repetition of Bridge 4's life was vivid, I felt the horror and loss that Kaladin did.By comparison, there is not a single moment in WaT that I even felt a stab of regret, not even when characters I've now known for multiple books were dying, or when the villain nuked his own hometown, or when Jasnah got rope-a-doped by T in the debate over whether the other queen should join the Third Reich--though admittedly that part was funny. The fixation on mental health issues is glaring and clumsy, and while we didn't get a "Children in Cages" Facebook Liberal white woman moment like last time, we got multiple troons and an interspecies faggot romance which felt totally out of place. Sanderson picked a really bad time to double down on gay race communism given that it just got demolished in the court of public opinion globally, it feels like he was writing for last year's political fad.
>>24095396>whether the other queen should join the Third ReichIt's way more ridiculous than that. She's sitting at a desk with the God of Hatred and Christopher Hitchens, and choses to side with Hatred because Lady Hitchens feels in-group preference.Like his NAME is Hatred. If Hitler had been named Bosewicht Schattenstoß and had an eyepatch with a skull on it, it would be less obvious than Odium's villainy.
>>24090944HG Wells has good prose too
>>24090926Forget the I am groot MCU tier dialog. This guy is a fucking hack, all his names are just historical names with one letter changed or one word borrowed from a different languageKaladin is Saladin, Ishar is Ishtar, Shadesmar is Shadesea in half-Spanish. I have no idea whose historical figure he butchered to come up with Shallan but I am 100% sure that there's one.
His defense for putting the fag romance in his book was "It says more about you if you don't include these things"He's compromised and implicitly accusing authors who don't put LGBT shit in their books of thoughtcrimes. Don't buy his books and don't support him.
>>24090944>Gene WolfeLatro and the Severin series are great, but a bunch of his short stories are so GK Chesterton CS Lewis style christian allegories I find them ineffective. And I love his heavy baroque style, but I think Jack Vance has a similar, brighter style of equal complexity.
Just finished it today. It makes 3 for 3 in the last Sanderson books that I've read being disappointments (Wax & Wayne finale + 2 Stormlight). How has he managed to get worse at writing dialogue over time? Nearly every second line took me out of the story or worse made me feel as if I was reading a conversation between two characters who could have been completely interchangeable. The intent on making the Cosmere this one big universe really distracted from the story too, has anybody done a count of how many words/pages are spent on those "loose threads" as he so delightfully referred to the Ghostbloods that fucking dragged on and on?Syl and Kaladin dancing was the peak of the book. To his credit, there was less fabrial science so WaT is at least better than RoW in that regard.
>>24094794Gotta set up those hooks for part 2 or worse, Mistborn's final arc with the interstellar fights.
>>24091740I immediately laughed at this, what the fuck was he thinking?
>author so bad he wrote the notorious “I shat in my shardplate” and “personification of cancerous anal discharge” passages>the thing that finally convinces the Branderson fans on /lit/ to abandon ship is not his atrocious fucking writing but that apparently there are some gay side characters now or something I hate this fucking board so much it’s unreal. None of you have any taste at all. You read novels like Facebook posts. If it agrees with you politically it’s good, if it doesn’t it’s bad. No artistic ability required.
>>24096236Not a bad thing. GRRM and Tad Williams also do it, and I like it. Even Tolkien did it (Sam Gamgee, Tom Bombadil)
>>24090928>But stand. Kaladin. DID.This is actually embarassing. Now I get how he churns out 1200 page novels every year.
>>24096707It's literally, unironically written like a capeshit screenplay. And screenplays in general are unanimously, without exception, fucking garbage. Brandon would do very well in Hollywood, if he decides to make that transition.
>>24096715What's the longest paragraph in WaT, 3 or 4 lines?
>>24096718Probably 4, and you just KNOW some of his fans on Reddit complained about how hard to read it was.
