This did not enhance my appreciation or understanding of LotR or The Hobbit. In fact, many things that used to seem simple and clear are now vague and overly complicated.
>>24092600I disagree
>>24092600It's almost like The Lord of the Rings and especially The Hobbit are self-contained stories that don't require extensive study to understand and enjoy.
>>24092627Why did you make yourself sound like a homo with the "it's almost like" instead of not saying those words and just saying what you mean?
I don't think any of the posthumous publications should have ever been allowed and the idea of a Tolkien estate is insane. People use the silmarilion to act smug but bottom line is that its unfinished and shouldn't have been made public. Same for much if not all the other posthumous work.
>>24092600>I have a double-digit IQThat’s fine most anons on 4chan do, but by reading a book that still puts you above them. The Silmarillion is a collection of legends as told by the Elves and have nothing to do with the events of the Hobbit and LotR except for providing the backstory for some characters.
>>24092600It feels very different from LOTR like it could be its own separate continuity .
>>24092600>torwin son of torwin father of tiwen brother of tiwin and towen, towen father turwin and towen....Shit "book". tolkien fags would eat any piece of shit he pooped and called a "masta pice". Literally cult tier
>>24092673this argument was always retarded, there are several editions that exist all detailing all the possibilities that tolkien envisioned, and even without them, the silmarillion still follows a linear narrative that filters people like you because you were never forced to be comfortable with reading something like a bible everyday, go read them instead of using someone else's tired dune analogy as a talking point
>>24092885I'm not making the argument you think I am at all to be honest. I have no clue what you're even referencing
>>24092888you said it was unfinished and yet can't know that
>>24092893It was though. His son. had to work to make it the narrative it is. Also I'm not discussing its quality. The silmarilion is debatably fine to publish. I'm just saying morally. Its weird. I think the way we treat dead authors is frankly bizarre to macabre.
>>24092898his son had to combine his notes with explanation of why he chose the inclusions in a particular order, then wrote more books including even more notes, hell he included letters, what the fuck is incomplete here? we even have accounts about a post lotr story that tolkien chose to abandon, his is the most completed work you'll ever find and publishing it, like every other posthumous publication--kafka, dickinson, contributes to literature
>>24092638Because I don't give a shit about your feelings.
>>24092919I dunno. It seems pretty nihilistic and immoral. Who cares about contributing to literature? He's a man first. People treat dead authors like they're open books, a mausoleum to ransacked before the corpse is even cold. Its just not something I can ever be comfortable with. Especially if its an author I actually care about. How much of this even comes from the quoted lofty goal of contributing to literature and letters and all that vs. The much more humanely flawed desire to muckrake and always have more entertainment media to consume.
>>24092927tolkien named his oeuvre a legendarium so its not like he was being secretive, in fact if you read his letters, you'd know that he tried to publish an earlier edition of the silmarillion as a reading companion to lotr but his publishers refused because it was too anticlimactic, you are just another lazy pseud who chose to reveal their feelings about something they aren't passionate enough about to read
>>24092945I already know he tried to publish the silmarilion thats why I said its debatably fine. I don't think you really understand what I'm trying to say here. I'm talking about something much broader. It just puts me off. I don't understand why you're treating me like I'm attacking anything.
>>24092948you don't understand what you're trying to say, you are just bouncing off aimlessly trying to maintain a modicum of authenticity, the silmarillion isn't complete, not quite my point, posthumuous publications are bad, oh no i didn't mean that, it's dishonest retards like you that lower engagement in this board, and it's made worse because you can't be bothered to put in the effort to articulate your arguments
>>24092955I haven't shifted at all. I suppose we're at an impasse then. You're just being really mean
>>24092673>More Tolkien is badFuck off. We were already robbed of the New Shadow.
Did you like the LOTR appendices?
