Recently had to end a friendship because a kid I was hanging out with turned out to be homo. He didn’t even look or seem gay, looked like a young Christopher Walken, but he was sitting next to me on the couch while I was talking with him about Tolstoy, he got a visible erection which he quickly tried to hide by crossing his legs. Every straight male I know who is into serious literature like Melville and Shakespeare is old as fuck. And women, don’t even get me started on them.

How can I meet non-homo and non-old bros who are passionate about literature?
>>
Start with the Greeks. Just a bunch of normal, straight bros hanging out and shooting the shit and you'll meet other normal, straight bros who have also read the Greeks for entirely non-sexual reasons.

Why were you looking at his penis to notice a boner

Oh, my favourite authors? Melville, Mann, Mishima, Proust. You know, manly men doing manly things.
>>
>>24094107
I don’t know any straight, young men men who read the Greeks a lot

>>24094110
We were sitting next to each other and I could see all of him and it jumped out, of course I’m gonna notice it
>>
>>24094105
u wanna meet them to fuck or something? just read faggot. have conversations with the dead.
>>
Straight man here. I read lots of novels, mostly science fiction. Yay RoyalRoad and Kindle Unlimited.
Novels outside genre, on the bookshelves, are gatekept by Karen. Karen doesn't want straight white men to have nice things. But Karen can't do anything about RoyalRoad, and hasn't really been able to stop Kindle Unlimited.
>>
Why do you think just because he got a boner that he's gay?
>>
>>24094138
You know you can just pirate books?

>>24094139
Because he was starting at me in the eyes very intently while I was talking and after he got a boner he blushed
>>
>>24094105
Young bros read Percy Jackson and other YA for 13 year olds

If you are still in school or UNI, join a literature club. You could also join your schools honor society and chat with others who are, hopefully, interested in academics.

If not in enrolled, you could go to your local book store club, or use event apps like "meetup".

You know you can read books in publicdomain on gutenberg.org without stealing?
>>
>>24094202
The books in public domain that I want to read I do often get from there, if they are in English. But for example if I’m reading Shakespeare, I prefer annotations and standardized spelling
>>
>>24094202
You can’t buy the books because it is considered impossible to own them: Amazon can revoke your copy at any time based on copyright changes or something. So if it is impossible to truly possess electronic books, it must be impossible to steal them.
>>
>>24094105
>he got a visible erection which he quickly tried to hide by crossing his legs
Surely as the owner of a penis you're perfectly well aware the things have a mind of their own and an erection doesn't necessarily correspond to actual arousal?
>>
>>24094202
Copying is not theft. You could argue that giving authors a legal monopoly on copying for a certain period is a net-positive policy, but objectively "intellectual property" is not property in the same sense that a house or a hammer or a TV are.

>but he was sitting next to me on the couch while I was talking with him about Tolstoy, he got a visible erection
Because you were talking about Tolstoy? wut.
>>
>>24094167
Isn't it normal to be embarrassed by random erections?
>>
Anon I’m bi and I wouldn’t get hard if someone was talking to me about Tolstoy. Sometimes erections happen just because
>>
>>24094167
Did he act like a fag after that happened? If he did than he actually was, but if not maybe he was just simply embarrassed because it was a bad coincidence. We all get random boners now and again, if it happened to me when I was in a situation like that I would be embarrassed but would just act like a straight dude about it, but if he acted like a faggacy than he was a faggacy.
>>
>>24094105
Why do you care if the people you read books with are gay?
>>
This is because fags are mentally ill and have to put up a facade about how they're totally normal well adjusted people who just happen to like buggery.
Literary fiction is mostly shit books written by uninsightful retards parading as being deep accounts of the soul.
The two are analogous.
>>
>>24094405
He is a very self conscious teenager so it is hard to tell what looks faggy, but his behavior until then didn’t seem like. But after that in retrospect the fact that he was texting me and calling me all the time and inordinately excited to talk about whatever book I was reading, which he would invariably read too, made me pretty sure he’s a fag.
>>
>>24094105
Creative culture and the arts, other than music, spend noticeable effort trying to keep heterosexual men out.
>>
>>24094105

highsexuales.
>>
>>24094167
i wouldn't want to share a boner with a young christopher walken, especially knowing that he carried a gold watch up his ass for the entire duration of the vietnam war
>>
>>24094431
>exting me and calling me all the time and inordinately excited to talk about whatever book I was reading, which he would invariably read too,
you should thank your stars buddy

She can do something about those things, if she gets enough political power. Which she will, when the next election rolls around. Count on it.

I'm not gay and I don't want to trans my gender but I fantasize about being turned into a woman and forced into temporary sexual slavery by a group of ripped hung men. Does this make me a reader
>>
>>24094105
>GIWTWM
Gay people read more because they are less self-conscious about doing things that appear feminine.
>>
>>24094105
selection bias
basically all publishing houses are staffed exclusively by women so what now determines if a book is published is not quality anymore but how women value the author
the end result is mostly shit story for and by women that get published and the only men that stomach that are gays
>>
>>24094105
Well, part of the problem is getting published. If you're a straight, Christian white dude you are not getting published, full stop. I have gone through the process with three books. First getting an agent is a bitch and a half. The only people that will *touch* a book by a straight white Christian guy are the oldest agents. The silver lining is that they tend to be pretty powerful in the agencies (like my agent was literally the head of Trident), but it takes ages for them to actually get to it since they are running the entire agency. Then they shop it to the publishers, and the publishers just straight up will not touch a writer with certain demographics in certain genres. Men see that all that is being published is weird feelie books with nonsensical titles and decide to embrace illiteracy. Going through the grind of actually pushing a book through traditional publishing with the Big Three shows you exactly why regular men don't read books anymore. Unfortunately cinema and TV are basically downstream from books so they are getting wiped out also.
>>
>>24096328
Gay people don't need to prove they are not a woman (i.e. a lazy, superficial, dependent person) in order to find a loving partner.
>>24094105
Find a less practical person.
A lot of men try to find life lessons in the books they enjoy.
>>
>>24094105
im a sexual
i would rather lift a bunch of weights and do martial arts than have sex.
i had a woman flirt with me at the supermarket last november. Disgusting and flattering experience at the same time.
>>
>>24096369
American cinema is formulaic schlock compared to other countries
>>
>>24096398
Having spent time traveling and interacting with foreigners, I can say with absolute certainty that they are near universally inferior culturally and surprisingly dimwitted compared to my fellow Americans.
>>
>>24094105
It's because men are no longer respected for having interests outside of making money and having sex. The dominant culture shames them into avoiding anything outside of those two realms. The only ones immune to that shame are autistic males, homosexuals, and women.
>>
>>24096760
I have a friend who's none of those things and still reads. (Well, he might be slightly autistic? Hard to say.)
>>
>>24096770
Then he's an exception, and exceptions don't disprove rules
>>
>>24096787
I suppose, and my friend group may also be skewed (as indicated by the fact that I'm posting on a literature board).
>>
>>24096743
That really doesn’t disprove what I said which is due to American production companies not liking to take risks and the American government being adverse to footing the cost for exceptionally artistic but unprofitable films
>>
>>24096851
What does your original posthave to do with anything at all?
>>
>>24096743
Most countries in the world are too poor to have any books at all circulating
>>
>>24096760
>The only ones immune to that shame are autistic males, homosexuals, and ack!
that will be my market then
>>
>>24094105
I've also noticed this and as a 29 year old straight male it truly makes me sad. Even people I'm best bros with I can't talk about literature with. I really have no one in my life except for my gf who understands and wants to talk about beauty, art, poetry, the feeling you get when you read something truly great. And even with her I feel like I can't always express myself fully. I can't imagine living without beauty, beautiful music, beautiful art, beautiful literature, and I feel grateful that my parents introduced me to reading from a young age and I had an amazing high school English teacher who taught me to love Shakespeare and Tolkien and encouraged me to come to his poetry club. Because of reading I feel like I was able to develop so much more as a person, to have a real interior life, to understand myself through literature, and that makes me happier than any "grind" or utilitarian transactional skill-up book like we're in a fucking RPG or some shit. These dudes cannot imagine investing time in something that doesn't have an immediate material benefit and I feel sorry for them. Of course I read non-fiction too but the great transformational books that have profoundly affected me as a person have been fiction. Just another example of how the modern world wants to crush the human experience underfoot and monetize every single fucking facet of our existence. Quoth Dostoevsky, "Beauty will save the world."
