Currently around halfway through the return to France arc. Am I alone in thinking this part is incredibly dull in comparison to the rest of the book?

Why do people love this book so much? Is it because of the authentic tone? Is it because people find a friend in it or they relate to it? Admittedly I haven't managed to make it to chapter 10, but I couldn't find anything that fascinated me. Maybe my view of art is too rationalistic.
