Life is pain.

I have the same issue, starting books and then seeing another i want to read. So I limit myself to 2 books, one fiction and one nonfiction. If i feel like reading something else i read the other.
>>
Having read hundreds of books, the ones that don‘t make you crave going back and reading more are not worth your time. Ignore and move on to a book that really captures you.
>>
If life was a book, I'd have killed myself by now. No, in fact, I do intend on killing myself eventually.
>>
If you stop using phone apps and 4chan and dopamine farming things you will suddenly have way more attention span for reading.

Im actually ADHD, diagnosed before it was cool
>>
>>24107749
Every book is great until it isn't, i tried switching genres, reading fic/non fic.
it's always the same issue
>>
So go do something else for a while then come back later. What’s the issue?
>>
>>24107803
not coming back because it feels like a chore IS the issue

Force yourself to read 1 page per day.
You can just have a stack of different books and read them when you feel like it. Dry philosophy goes down way easier when you can take a break and read about Joseph Jostar beat the shit out of the Pillermen. A lot of /lit/ has a hateboner for manga, but as someone with ADHD it helped a lot with just getting the reading habit down with something easier on your brain and sometimes as potent as actual books. Just getting the habit down will take you miles, and at the very least reading manga is far better than looking at social media or playing video games or even just doing nothing all day. If you hate what you're eating, your diet will fail. If you hate what you're reading, you probably won't finish it.

But if you read multiple books, have a book you're "focused" on reading and place that book in a place where you CANNOT ignore it. Place it right in front of your computer, let it shame you. Make it as physically easy as possible to pick it up and begin reading. Don't start reading 10 different books though, what this anon >>24107730 suggests is really potent, though I prefer "easy vs hard" reading rather than "fiction vs nonfiction" but just make sure they're extremely different from each other.

Also, read stuff you're actually into. While you should get out of your comfort zone and try harder material, if you're struggling reading don't pick up something like War and Peace unless you're really really into War and Peace. I like the Metro video games, so I decided to read the Metro series. I liked the STALKER games, so I read Roadside Picnic. Interested in Roman history? Read about it. You can even read some cheesy fun fact books to just ease yourself into things.

Also, try and immersive yourself in what you're reading. Eat Japanese food if you're reading about Japanese history. Try cooking some ancient Aztec dishes while reading about their history. Watch the Lord of the Rings movies while reading the books. Visit Salem while reading The Crucible. This will greatly enhance your experience by making it real and attaching it to real things.

Also, start drinking shittons of caffeine OP. Brew yourself some black coffee or some tea while you read. Us guys with ADHD benefit GREATLY from caffeine, I've replaced all my meds with caffeine years ago it works completely fine for me.

But the biggest thing I want you to do is to take a book you are reading, place it at your desk, bedside table, kitchen, whereever, and read 1 page a day. Then maybe 5 pages. Then a chapter. Take baby steps and you'll be a reader in no time, I promise you.

I find reading a biography of somebody you’re interested in will help you get the momentum of turning pages because of genuine interest. It’s hard to jump into a novel that will inevitably have lulls and bore you.

You don't know pain.

After twelve years or so of consistent daily reading my ability to enjoy movies, shows, or video games has been ruined. I wish I could enjoy some mindless tv slop. I have a netflix subscription for absolutely no reason at all.

Save yourself anon/ Stop trying to read right now!

I felt the same before even picking up reading. It was the reason why I fell down to literature in the first place. I found everything else to be non stimulating and would feel like I'm wasting my time. When I first started in April of last year, I thought I would read 2 or 3 books and then lose interest, just like everything else. Since then, I've read nearly daily through about 15 books, 4 of which were over 400 pages. Feels good to have found a hobby bros

this, once you realise you'll stop making whiny posts and just read a book. Something preschoolers can do already.

>muh ADHD
STFU with these made up diseases. You can't focus because you have shit discipline. Start meditating and inculcate good mental, intellectual and behavioral habits. Put your stupid phone down. Stop endlessly scrolling through your feeds, playing games, fapping to porn, and stay away from screens altogether as much as possible. Use your phone/computer only as a tool for your work or get anything beneficial done, not as a means of escapism and pleasure. If you do that for even a couple of weeks, your brain will get used to this new mode of functioning and focus much better. Be in control of your mind. Don't let it go into autopilot mode with shitty habits and live like an NPC.

>Read outside
>blue light filtering apps on all devices
>take B vitamins and stop taking things that strip them in excess (carbs, caffeine, alcohol)
>intermittent fasting

It's that simple.

Imagine someone has diagnosed depression. Will listening to depressive music all day do a good for him? Or will it make him even more depressed?
In the same way, you have ADHD, but that doesn't justify you increasing your fault of attention span even more.

I genuinely thank everyone who posted a helpful comment, especially anon on >>24108386 for the high effort.
I'm also thankful for the "mean-ish" comments, I they are a good reminder that I shouldn't give my illness too much power.
Granted, I have to put in more effort than the average Joe, but life with no discipline is bleak one, and I'm not giving up on myself.
(I know I asked about the reading habit, but stuff from here can be applied everywhere.)
Thanks again lads
