I recently applied for a job as a 'senior specialist' of illuminated manuscripts, and to my great surprise I was actually contacted and asked to come in for an interview. Problem is that most of my CV is fake, and beyond some fundamentals (I have a master in history, I have studied old books during my degree, and a genuine interest in medieval manuscripts) I am not qualified to call myself a 'senior specialist'.

Therefore, I need some ideas and help how I can fake my way through the interview. What books on medieval manuscripts should I read, what should I watch, say, claim, etc.

Can I have that job too? I only have an associates(lie)

You have to lie bigger than that.

I am more qualified then this man so I should have the job instead of him

I worked in a research library and ealed with a lot of manuscripts, specifically mostly whaling logs from the 1700s and 1800s, a lot of digitizing and transcribing.

First thing you shold know is you dont have to fake it and its not exactly a competitive market, as long as you have some experience with the maintance and use of old books and show legitament interest in the subject you should be ok. not exactly a competitive market where if you cant quote Oakeshott Typology of swords you will be axed. Just show you have some genuine interest in the job material and you will probably have your shoe in the door. Bring up an old book of Heraldry you like to demonstrate interest.

Lying bigger would just make it too risky. I'm already lying that I have a high-school degree. I'm pushing my luck with the associates. Both are from bad schools too.

I would do anything for a job transcribing whaling logs

it's the 'senior' title that scares me a bit, if it'd been a junior position i might even have spoken the truth on the CV.

i said lied and said I had previously worked at an auction house with specifically books, so I'd have to show some level of competence in the subject.

>? You will help to develop, manage and interpret the Library’s collection of illuminated manuscripts. You will be responsible for cataloguing these manuscripts and presenting them to a variety of audiences, through online resources, writing blog posts, answering specialist enquiries, and contributing to exhibitions and the public programme. You will oversee digitisation projects, including the selection of manuscripts to be digitised. You will also contribute to fundraising initiatives, and strategic communications with our stakeholders.

>To be successful in this role, you will have a doctoral degree or its equivalent in medieval art history, history, literature or another closely-related discipline. You will have specialist knowledge and strong research experience relevant to the illuminated manuscripts collection of the British Library. You will have strong knowledge of medieval Latin, and excellent palaeographical and codicological skills. You will have the ability to work with colleagues in other areas, and the ability to work independently and to a high degree of accuracy.

think you can fake that on the job? https://blogs.bl.uk/digitisedmanuscripts/2025/01/curator-of-illuminated-manuscripts.html

It was boring a lot of days, but I would be lying if said there wasnt some interesting stuff. cause a lot of the voyages were multi year long, you can often piece together a bit of the story of the writer. More then a few times I saw the begining of a log full of crude doodles only to see by the end fully compentent pieces of art with perspective and shading and shit. guess you got to develop a hobby while on a boat.
Also, the writing was all surprisingly very legible, even 200-300 years later, very clean, I had a much worse time trying to transcribe some chicken scratch personal diaries from the 1910-20s. Makes sense ofc when you take a moment to think about it, the ledgered were meant to be read to make sure everything checks out. Remember once A meteorologist comming in to see them because they are pretty solid weather records that are useful for long term weather analysis.

>senior
oh yah, no. that odd. almost an oxymoron. how can you be senior if you are new?
If its a head of a department thing, maybe you should try to find junior staffing and work up till you have management experience before applying.

you got an interview not because you lucked into it but because the applicant pool for such a specialized job is tiny.
you can't fake your way through this type of interview because, again, it's hyper-specialized and they'll see through you immediately
sorry

Just go for it, demonstrate a legit interest and get on the with interviewer. Sounds like boomer advice but I've interviewed a lot of candidates over the years and a lot of it really boils down to vibe and how much they actually want to do the job.

That will get you started. If pressed for time Deringer, de Hamel, Bischoff
good luck
