How does anyone make a living talking about stoicism. How can anyone even scrape together enough about stoicism to talk about on a podcast? All of stoicism is like 4 core tenets that can easily be applied to nearly every situation in life. Everything else is sophistry and mental gymnastics. As long as youre smarter than your average redditor you will never have to wonder how a stoic would deal with a school bully
>>24111993You answered yourself. As long as the core tenants can be understood by a large group of people, the philosophy will spread like wildfire and lead people to read into it more, adding their own vapid nonsense each time. Stoicism is just male astrology.
>>24112066The masses crave simplicity, and simplicity sells. Stoicism is the fortune cookie of the philosophers, easily digestible and easily misunderstood.

>>24111993I downloaded and read the introduction of the Letters on Ethics by Senneca. And read like the first three letters. I don't think there is more to it. The introduction was pretty much everything there is to it.Then I got to Schopenhauer instead. Then I realized there is not really much going on in Philosophy in general. So I rather start reading novels. Just my thoughts.
>>24111993I don't know. Ask Ryan Holliday. He's been running that stoic grift for years somehow.
>>24111993The simplicity of Stoicism belies its importance. It really was a milestone in philosophy. Up until then, people were the unthinking slaves of their emotions (as many still are today). Taking a more detached viewpoint was a step forward for the western mind.
