Should I get the three compilation tomes or the complete works?Will I be missing out on a tonne if I were to get the compilations?
>>24112503Going just by the picture you posted, yes, you'll miss a tonne. In Aeschylus you'll miss The Oresteia which is a trilogy thst starts with Agamemnon, but continues with The Libation Bearers and The Eumenides. So you'll only read the first play in the trilogy which only sets up the characters family tree and history for the next play. In Sophocles you'll miss Oedipus in Colono which is the direct continuation of Oedipus king, and you'll also miss Ajax and Philoctetes which are Iliad related plays. The former tells the tragic story of Ajax after the events of The Iliad, the later tells the story of Odysseus and (I think) the son of Achilles gaslighting a poor disabled man. Euripides having only one play of his nineteen is a joke.

>>24112691I think you should read the authors chronologically (Aeschylus, Sophocles, then Euripides) to not only appreciate how the medium evolved, but also to read the plays in order. Having to read 2 plays of Sophocles and one of Euripides before reading the 2nd play of The Oresteia, and then doing the same before the third looks stupid for me. I might be wrong but I think Euripide's most popular play was Medea and it's also not included here.
