What do you think of the Finnish language and literature as a whole? Do you think Finnish translations of books are as good as the originals? Sometimes I feel like I can see the error in translation and what the original English text was :D

The translator of Unknown Soldiers speaks neither English nor Finnish natively, and it unfortunately shows. It's shameful that a work so important wasn't handled by a Finn and the only contact foreigners have to this work is by this subpar attempt.Finnish translations of English novels are pretty terrible these days. The quality of education has gone downhill fast and young Finns don't even know their own language anymore. I tried to read Dan Brown's Deception Point in Finnish the other day but it went into the trash after three chapters for being unreadable dogshit. I downloaded the original ebook and noticed several parts the translator got plain wrong within the first few pages. It's unbelievable mistakes like that can be left in bestsellers that bring most money to publishers. If you look at older novels from 40-50+ years ago, they're in a whole different league. The translators back then actually took their job seriously and made sure the result sounded natural in Finnish.
I only like finnish literature when the author writes in swedish. Finnish dry humor confounds me.
>>24112645I read unknown soldiers in english last year. It wasn't bad - i liked the humor, but the repetitive nature of the combat and the fatalism and despondency of the soldiers made it feel like a slog, like actually fighting the continuation war. I watched the 1955 film adaptation, and would suggest it's superior to the book.
I wish I could express to foreigners how good he is. The only point of reference I can think of is Pindar. Then again, I also wish I could express to people how great Pindar is.
