>>24112973>I'm starting to think Harold Bloom was right
Oh look, the same thread that was posted yesterday, and the day before, and the day before...How about think for yourself, for once?
>>24112973It doesn't
>>24112973Who is harold bloom and why should I care?
>>24112996why does he insist on looking like that
>>24112973Meme author with no reputation outside the US.
>>24114288Long hair because he was too introverted to get it cut often.Beard because he didn't want to look like he cared about personal hygiene too much.Glasses because he read too many books.Bandanna because male enneagram type 4s like to have one item of clothing that sets them apart from everyone else, so they can feel special and unique, which is their primary motivation. For me in these winter months, it's a burgundy scarf. Now I've adopted the scarf, I literally go around thinking "it doesn't matter if that guy's 6'3 and I'm only 6'0.5, because I have a burgundy scarf which signifies I'm a sensitive and unique artist type" all day. I think DFW felt the same about his bandanna, only it was probably more like "this bandanna signifies just how big and sensitive my brain is, that it needs a cover to keep it from exploding and to protect it".
>>24114337about the bandana:some girl he knew at college in Arizona recommended it to him.He wore it to absorb sweat.
>>24114376It's probably what made him sweat in the first place.
>>24114413i'd say it was being in Arizona, but i get what youre goin for.
honestly, 374, totally different book after (reading it now)
>>24114376>at college in ArizonaDid he not go to Amherst and Harvard?
>>24112973it doesnt
>>24114666he also went to Arizona for a time before Harvard.

>>24114724TIL. Another item on the infinitely long list of things in IJ that were obvious reflections of his life ...
>>24114729That whole James Sr. chapter was well-written but just wayyyy tooooo looonnngg. It is also pretty blatantly riffing on the point made in DFW's essay on Federer, which just makes the chapter more obvious and less interesting.Glad you're enjoying the book though.
>>24114835yeah ive read nothing else by DFW besides big red son for obvious reasons. i think the less you know going in the more it changes you for sure.
