A couple of things you need to know about Clancy books (at least the ones written when he was alive):>the US government*, military, and law enforcement are made up of the most competent human beings on the planet (*unless they're liberals)>the Soviets are bros who don't really hate the US and assist them regularly>Jack Ryan is so virtuous and honorable he makes Superman look like a degenerateThe Sum of All Fears is probably as good as it ever gets; the digressions are somewhat limited, there's genuine stakes/tension, and it's the only time Ryan isn't a total boy scout and loses his shit a little
