I really tried to get through Melmoth the Wanderer but the story lacked any sort of focus and meandered on extremely long boring tangents that had zero gothic horror elements that destroyed any and all enjoyment I was having.

It is true that the story meanders a lot but the book is very engaging at many of these points. Instead of seeking gothic horror it must be read like a romance at the more tedious parts. Also, the Melmoth's character is one of the best in gothic fiction.
