Ok so what do you guys ACTUALLY think of these stupid books?
>>
They're perfectly fine children's novels. If I had kids I would read HP to them. They're very comfy. But I would also encourage them to read Le Guin, Tolkien etc. and diversify.
>>
Read them out loud at the same time The Wizard of Oz is playing. Turn the movie on and then start reading out loud from the first word. I think you're going to be really impressed by what happens when you do.
>>
In terms of worldbuilding she is the greatest
>>
if someone tried to ask me this in real life, I'd spit on their shoe
>>
>>24118523
neva read 'em, neva will
>>
HERMOINE IS BLACK
>>
I think they're great
Books 1 to 6 are all good and they get better as the series progresses
>>
>>24118527
There exist much better and internally consistent, well-written (both prose and narrative) YA than Harry fucking Potter. Read more books. Read more YA books.
>>
I was a huge fan until I stumbled upon a porn ad while looking for harry potter fansites and from that point on I was a fan of porn
>>
>>24118536
>juvenile hyperbole
>mention of 'worldbuilding'
anon, i diagnose you with Retard
>>
>>24118556
Book 5 was the worst THOUGH. And book 4 was the best.
>>
>>24118523
I really love the first two. I haven't read the third but will someday. I'm not interested in going further than the third book.
>>
>>24118536
A certain type of world building, maybe, but let's be honest, the actual wizarding world makes zero sense if you even begin to question how it works in the slightest.
>>
>>24118523
They're excellent for children and teen books. When you read them as an adult you start to notice the flaws, lot of holes in the plot, world building, and characterization, but they are incredibly fun and comforting to read. They are well worth having on your bookshelf and reading.
9/10 when I was a kid.
7.5/10 as an adult.

It's always been hilarious to me since she is LITERALLY ILLUSTRATED ON THE OFFICIAL COVER OF THE BOOK as white, but because it's trendy to blackwash things, Rowling tried to pretend it was possible.
>>
>>24118549
If she black then she BLEACHED
>>
>>24118945
For all seven books she never mentions exactly how Hermione or her parents look. We only know that she's got buck teeth and bushy hair. Inevitably someone will post the sentence from book three where it says her face was white, that's not an indication of race, lots of non-white people can have white faces, including light skin or bi-racial black people.
Someone will post Rowling's drawings which still doesn't prove anything because Hermione still looks like she could be a light skin black girl.

But it doesn't matter anyway because Rowling never called Hermione black. A reporter asked her opinion on a black woman playing the role of Hermione in the play and Rowling said she thought she was a brilliant actress and she never specified Hermione's race so it's a non-issue.

Distractingly bad prose even at an age appropriate time to be reading them, such that the editors should've been yeeted out the Scholastic office windows. Dropped after second. Overall decent enough story with the Snape bastard stuff at least judging from the films. Comfy world dovetailing off the Star Wars Prequels and LOTR era of film.

>Hermione black

Canonically Irish and/or Welsh, clearly-- a Cheddar Woman, so to speak.
>>
>>24118962
>lots of non-white people can have white faces
huh
>>
>>24118523
Amazing books to spark an interest of reading in any elementary schooler
>>
>>24118974
yes anon plenty of people who aren't white can be really pale. I'm in the U.S. I know more than a few light skin black people, Latinos, Arabs, and east Asians who are pale as fuck, lighter than most white people they stand next to.
>>
>>24118536
It's more set dressing and mood setting than worldbuilding, really. That's also why when the whimsy went away like 5 books in I lost 90% of the interest. For the movies it was even worse, they greengothified it all by the third movie.
>>
>>24118962
She is literally white on the cover of the book
>>
>>24118994
but latinos, arabs and east asians are not black
and white and pale is not the same
>>
Gryffindor is the normalfag house
Slytherin is the chud house
Ravenclaw is the autistic house

What is Hufflepuff
>>
>>24119108
Gryffindor are chads Hufflepuff are normgroids
>>
>>24119108
Gryffindor is Jocks.
Slytherin is Goths
Ravenclaw is Nerds
Hufflepuff is theater kids.
>>
The series was wholesome English whimsical charm in the first two books, but the decision to age up the plot made the whimsical setting a total mismatch, and things that used to be fun are suddenly stupid and annoying.

Special needs
>>
All I remember is taking the train one morning the day after the latest potter book dropped and dozens of people were reading it. That was kind of neat to see, all those different people holding up the same book. Haven't seen anything like that before or since.
>>
>>24118549
kek I decided to look this up and saw some absolutely deranged discussions about it
>>
>>24118523
Neil Gaiman's books are much better. Check out American Gods and Sandman.
>>
>>24118523
Before 3rd grade I hated reading. Then I was assigned the prisoner of Azkaban as a reading assignment. After that I read all the series that were printed at the tim. It instilled in me a love of reading that I didn’t think possible beforehand. So in the role of children’s books they are excellent but it’s when adults cling to hard to their childhood that it becomes cringe.
>>
Why didn't they just shoot Voldemort?
>>
>>24119295
That’s was what was nice about the books at the time though. When I started reading Harry Potter I was the same age as Harry. Then when I started to get older he grew up with me with each subsequent release. The problem now is there is nothing holding you back from reading all volumes when you are a kid or being too old for the first few novels.
>>
>>24119087
Where did I say they were? I'm pointing out that other groups of people can have skin with little to no melanin, little enough that they're often times more pale than White or European people.
And the part of the book where her face is described as white, the word white is being used to indicate shock or fear not her race.
>>24119078
Rowling never said she was black anyway, she only said that she never mentioned about her race in the books (which is true) so it's okay for Hermione to be black in the play. People have been arguing about this for almost a decade and and she never even said the thing people are claiming. People just keep repeating the wrong information over and over again.
>>
>>24118523
I enjoyed them thoroughly as a young man. I could probably read it now and enjoy them. I think the way it captured people's imaginations can teach us a lot about how we interact with stories. It was also a "right time right place" kind of series, impossible to replicate.
>>
>>24119742
>impossible to replicate.
I don't think this is true. It's just that 99% of other writers are bad at writing. I say that because I've read a fair amount of published magical school fantasy and a lot of it could be good or at least better than what it is, but the people who write it are simply not as good at writing as Rowling is.
>>
>>24118527
This, pretty much. Once my kid is like 4-5, I'll begin reading this to him!.
>>
>>24119295
Yeah, at a certain point it started reading like "Harry, blood dripping from his brow, rose to his feet. The twisted bodies of flinglefloms lay motionless among the ruins of Bingobongo's shop of twangywonks. This was the work of Death Eaters, he was sure, his friend's lives were in danger. He needed to send a warning to Wibblybibblyboo or more blood would be shed this day. "
