You probably will not like it until the riot near the end and even that will probably mostly fall flat for you since there is not much action and still mostly just more suffering but the suffering is considerably less mundane so it may work for you. I loved it from fairly early on and read through it very quickly, have reread it a few times.

I picked it up because I liked The Grapes of Wrath and people said they're similar... but they aren't, in Germinal nothing ever happens, 80% of it is just describing mining equipment and technical stuff like that.
