never read it and not religious but maybe the idea is that his intention to spite the true god and had he known the christian god he would have insulted him, too.

The words God, Dios, Deus, etc... in European language all derive from pre-christian deities, and the concepts of heaven and hell derive from pre-christian religion as well.
Europeans still worship their old gods and believe in their old metaphysics, just now they read a jewish book and venerate a bunch of dead jews as well.
