Welcome to /pg/, where we read, write, and discuss pulp fiction. No, not the Tarantino film, but the classic genre stories from early 20th-century magazines printed on cheap wood *pulp* paper. These tales offered thrills for the common man and let imaginations soar. Though the magazines are gone, the spirit lives on, and here at /pg/, we explore the worlds, characters, and stories they inspired. So come on in and join the discussion!

It's firmly on the line of "Queer Lovecraft" but I still find Katalepsis to be an enjoyable serial.
>>
>Conan pantherishly savaged the fiendish foe, his barbarian thews like a pantherish savage tigers, his mind iron and flame. The civilised dorks, their pencil necks twitching in awe at such pantherish savagery, knelt, feeling bested by the barbarians ferocity. Still drenched in the beasts blood Conan made surprisingly sensual and tender love to the supple bosomed damsel, whomst had fallen in love with him earlier upon hearing the cimmerians pantherishly growly voice
Its so incredibly KINO

This but unironically.
>>
>>24143956
I meant it when I said its KINO. I genuinely love it. Im fucking tired of politicking and le hecking morally gray characters in fantasy. Fuck all that.
>>
The last threads we had some anons write original stuff of their own. One guy had a detective series he was doing. Any writefags got any new material?

I wrote a hunting adventure story set in pre-WWI Africa. I want to make it part of a series, but I’m trying to revise the ending. But I’d be happy to post it if we got this general up and running again

Incredibly based. Where is this from? Considering starting to read Conan but each used book of his I found is like $25 a pop, still.
>>
>>24144281
I have something but I'm not sure whether it could even be considered pulp. I haven't even really read any, desu. But I tried to based on anons's descriptions. It's about two men getting burnt at the stake set in Italy. I might post it tomorrow.
>>
>>24145942
Eh, post it either way. I’d be happy to share mine too, though I warn you the ending might need some revision
>>
>>24145943
My whole thing needs revision so no worries

So what I read is Robert E Howards Conan the Cimmerian Barbarian by John Finn I think. I got it on Kindle for 30 bucks or so. Its quite nice because Finn also gives you some context for the stories and starts with a Krull and two Solomon Kane stories, which Howard wrote before he came up with Conan. I recommend it, not sure how much the hardcover would be.
>that story about Gulka the Gorilla slayer

Go ahead and post it for us

What's the most underrated pulp stories you anons have read?. For me, it's shadow of the vulture. Besides technically introducing Red Sonya, it's also just a damn good story. Setting, prose, and characters are some of Howard's best. Ending was a little abrupt though
>>
>>24147365
I haven’t actually read that one. I think the Steve Costigan stories are bully, though
>>
The texas landscape when it's foggy and dreary like today surely must've been how Howard envisioned Cimmeria.
>>
>>24147597
His poem “Cimmeria” was
>Written in Mission, Texas, February 1932; suggested by the memory of the hill-country above Fredricksburg seen in a mist of winter rain
>>
>>24147619
It was gloomy land that seemed to hold
All winds and clouds and dreams that shun the sun,
With bare boughs rattling in the lonesome winds,
And the dark woodlands brooding over all,
Not even lightened by the rare dim sun
Which made squat shadows out of men; they called it
Cimmeria, land of Darkness and deep Night.

It was so long ago and far away
I have forgotten the very name men called me.
The axe and flint-tipped spear are like a dream,
And hunts and wars are like shadows. I recall
Only the stillness of that sombre land;
The clouds that piled forever on the hills,
The dimness of the everlasting woods.
Cimmeria, land of Darkness and the Night.

A long bow and a strong bow, and let the sky grow dark!
The cord to the nock, the shaft to the ear, and the king of Koth for a mark!

>but the classic genre stories from early 20th-century magazines printed on cheap wood *pulp* paper.
They were culled pulp because they were said to not be worth the paper they were printed on, production costs would not be recouped and financially it made more sense to get what money they could by just selling them to a pulp mill.

I'm somewhat new to this stuff, can someone rec some stuff similar to Zothique in tone and subject matter?
>>
>>24147160
Fuck, I thought I had it available on my phone. I'll have to wait until I get home. Fuck OneDrive and Microsoft 365.
>>

Wait so is it like a compilation?

Dying earth
Book of the new sun
Vathek(not pulp. but it's what it was based off)
Lovecraft(of course)
Certain Conan stories are close but the tone is generally more action based

Unfortunately not many can capture Smiths mix of horror and fantasy, but these are close
