Carrying over too many narratives from the last chapter is bad form. /wng/ should stay largely episodic.

Unlearning the use of filter words/phrases is fucking hard
I have been getting into etymology recently and wanted to try my hand at writing something with as few loan words as possible so I decided I'd try to download some dictionary databases and create an editor that could look at my writing and see what words weren't germanic in origin. I quickly found out this shit is really difficult. Luckily I found out some autist already did it. God bless autists around the world. Without you we would be living in the stoneage.
>>24839604Improving the quality of your prose, a big no no here. Watch: your step.
>>24839606Sounds like writing on Brutal Difficulty. Any reason, or just for fun?
>>24839647not that anon, but I heard anglo-based vocabulary makes for better prose compared to germanic/latin based vocabularyespecially in fantasy fiction
>>24839465only if it's a gynoid. we need to see the perspective of a man trying to find comfort and companionship with a fembot.
>>24839647A few years back I watched some Anglish videos and thought it was interesting how there are linguist autists who are coming up with old english compound words to replace loan words that we often use today. Then I learned about several authors that revived dead words we no longer use. Tolkien is a good example, he used some words from Old English that were considered dead and now we once more use them again today. Essentially I find it fun to learn about etymology and expand my vocabulary. Plus words from Germanic origin have a certain sovl to them. Pic rel is a paragraph that uses as many Germanic words as possible and you can see how it is mutually intelligible for languages of the same family.

>>24839821As both, I suppose, but I'm talking as a reader/reviewer. Curiously, every time I post a bad review, I get way more upvotes than downvotes, even when the other 19/20 reviews are all 5 stars. I feel like many people don't want to post a bad review to not be an asshole and they all concentrate around the negative reviews to do so anonymously. I think a comment section would be a nice half-step to see what other non-enjoyers think, and I would also like to see what the 5 star guys think about what I said. what’s the deal with MCs in cultivation stories gaining whiter skin, sharper jaws, noses, etc. as they improve their qualifications/cultivation?i know that they aren’t but it’s funny to imagine said chinese cultivators’ physiognomies growing more western european as a result of their increasing talent/cultivation.

>>24840455=IFERROR(G2 / (IF(N2="", TODAY(), N2) - M2),"")Or in other words, Followers / (End Date - Start Date), the duration in number of days. So, for example, Skulltaker has 475 followers and 58 days. That's 475/58. 8.189, which is 8.2.I've renamed it Follower Growth to be more obvious what it's about, even though it's a good bit longer. It can't be helped. Average Followers Gained Per Day would be more both more and less accurate, but eh. The most accurate would be it dynamically updating all the values every day and charting it, but that's too much. This means that until I update the follower counts again, it'll be somewhat less than it should be, assuming they get more followers. New stories have higher rates that drop off over time, usually anyway.
oh the doc is pretty detailed now, that's cool>keeping track of how many times it was postednow I'm going to be even more self conscious about linking it
>>24840540It's not something I'm going to update with any regularity. Maybe once ever few months, at most. Probably less, since most aren't post with any frequency. It really doesn't matter.
>tfw coincidentally started reading Ave Xia Rem Y just as the arc the whole story's been building up to is about to apex while the fans waited for yearsProbably gonna drop it anyway because the author lost his way but it's decent for a week's reading.
>>24840559I dropped AXRY because it felt like it didn't actually want to be a cultivation novel. The first arc was good with the initial training but past that point it felt like all the cultivating was happening in the background, and at some point MC just started shitting out white venom qi snakes with no fanfare. I don't want entire chapters of sitting on ass meditating but at least incorporate the breakthroughs into the plot for crying out loud.
>>24840564Yeah I definitely get that. The biggest flaw since the beginning was that the cultivation is just kind of something that happens parallel to the characters' growth rather than power being something that feels, you know, cultivated. A lot of it happens off-screen and seems arbitrary. The levels of cultivation are also almost meaningless. However since I have only read a few xanxia I wasn't as hung up on it as I might have otherwise been, but it definitely started to annoy me.
>>24840572It wouldn't be an issue if it didn't make BEING A XIANXIA such a core part of its marketing. It's more like, xianxia-inspired progfantasy

Anyone been reading Penitent? I've only read the first book but I feel like it's a nice mid point between prog fantasy and LitRPG. Gonna read Downtown Druid by the same author waiting for the second book to finish.
>>24840176>draws lower eyelids onNobody is fooled. Other races can contest this idea but chinks can't
>>24840627Yeah don't think it's very good.Writing's not bad enough to pick out flaws unless you look for them but the pacing is ass.Probably biased though because the author is guilty of saying too much in author's notes and that always pisses me off.
>>24840267if you post it ill read it if its not insanely long
>>24840641Also Downtown Druid did a truly egregious amount of s/o swaps so I might be holding that against it once I discovered it was the same author.
>>24840627Recently maxed out on available Penitent chapters. Which is a shame cause I found the Catholic-esque guilt take on the whole reincarnating as a baby so refreshing.Downtown druid is bretty gud also but I felt a little let down with how little he did after getting back to the city.Things you might also like: Six Souls, A Soldiers life, Turret Mage.
now that i think about it, are there any WNs where the story is essentially about 1980’s Compton gang warfare but it’s a fantasy setting?
>>24840641Some of those author notes had my eyes rolling out of my skull. It also definitely took a lot longer than expected to move on from the first arc though I don't really mind, but there was a lack of sub-plot that was needed to keep it engaging. Hopefully, the lack of access to hentai sites and the simmering self-hatred from being desperate enough to take this shit job will keep me focused. I’ll report back in a month.
It's fascinating that you can tell that most Isekai stories are written by literature and soft science people. Even characters that are supposed to be scientists rarely behave like people interested in science.I'm reading a story right now where MC got isekai'd to a world where there are no stars in the night sky. He wonders about it for a whole 5 seconds and then shrugs. Now imagine if someone like Neil deGrasse Tyson got isekai'd into such a world. He'd lose his mind trying to glean every bit of information he could about this world because it's that fascinating. Most people into science aren't as enthusiastic about it as him, but they often do have behaviors that make them want to figure something out rather than just accepting it as is. This is especially true when something is out of the norm and unlike what their previous worldview was. Characters getting isekai'd really should have more sense of wonder about being in an entirely other world. It wouldn't just all rest on the relationships the character makes in the new world.>>24841236Good luck, anon
>>24841101Fucking finally. Using elves as an mc or even having elves in the story automatically disqualifes it. Every single elves story is just some gooner bait or strait up smut. >>24841252Well, "no stars" is kind of a hard one to figure out. Maybe you could try getting a really powerful telescope, but beyond that... not a lot you can do. I do agree with the main point though. In any case I would love to write a scientist or engineer isekai, but the FBI doesn't like it when you post accurate recipes for explosives
Techno-/sciento-/thaumobabble isekais are the worst.
>>24841257>FBI doesn't like it when you post accurate recipes for explosivesActually they don't care, the recipes are out there two clicks away. But if you a really worrier you can you can modify them slightly to make then non usable and that will be fine.

>>24841273>>24841314>>24841355Why would you remove the ears if it's an elf? You should ignore the people that complain about the character being a dark elf.
>>24841352I kinda want it to lean into the hard sci fi angle. Not in the "sci fi" aspect, but in making the technology and society somewhat plausible. I just need to research:>what would a dwarven society look like in a early modern(ish) fantasy setting?>what advancements would a mining autist make when dropped into said dwarven society?>what is required to make those advancements, from what the dwarves already have?>what is the optimal order in which to do these things? The speculative technology aspect would mostly come into play when later in the story, when magic is properly introduced. Until then it would mostly be real technology with a few fantasy elements sprinkled in here and there.

The total earnings were $627,029. The Top 10 (0.86%) earners made $231,809 (37%). The Top 100 (8.6%) made $499,248 (79.6%).For 2025, the Federal Poverty Level for a single-person household in the 48 contiguous states is $15,650 per year. That's $1,304 per month. Only the top 94 (8.1%) were making that much.1,230 listed their membership counts, which includes free and paid. Their separate listed counts is negligible in the data I have, so I'm not reporting it. The member count average was 1,229 and the median was 73. The total was 430,610. The Top 10 had 99,432 members (23%) and the Top 100 had 270,187 (62.7%). The number of unique patrons and how much they overlap is unknown.Of the Patreons with the Top 10 most members, 5 reported their earnings. Of the Top 100 amount of members, 49 reported their earnings. This means that the numbers reported above likely skew significantly more towards the top patreons than what I've detailed. Unlike Graphtreon, I'm unable to estimate how much per member the patreon earned on average. For more details, look at the Patreon Earnings sheet.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vT4RMb3KvSVCJ6PUPqn-JNqATcKqWwwEBC5HuAsJCT-VRn_wk66cMPbvCY0FlN0dBk8Wrr8eLrUhGfu/pubhtml

Or even different categories. Graphtreon just makes a guess what the page is for, and tons of those guesses are wrongstill, somewhat interesting, I guess. The next step, assuming I get around to it, is stitching the two spreadsheets together and to see a rough estimate of the how much the worth of a follow varies.Any follower to membership would be the total, so not as interesting as paid only. If man will strike, strike through the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there’s naught beyond. But ’tis enough. He tasks me; he heaps me; I see in him outrageous strength, with an inscrutable malice sinewing it. That inscrutable thing is chiefly what I hate; and be the white whale agent, or be the white whale principal, I will wreak that hate upon him. Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I’d strike the sun if it insulted me. For could the sun do that, then could I do the other; since there is ever a sort of fair play herein, jealousy presiding over all creations. But not my master, man, is even that fair play. kind of shocking how often he throws a meltie about litrpg in the webslop thread
>>24842082I think it's because western authors webnovel authors have a traditional publishing mindset compared to eastern authors. Take Sky Pride for example, which was mentioned in a reply, in couple of chapters the MC goes from having his family murdered, living years (?) in some garbage heap, meeting some elder in the woods and getting recruited by a sect. That sequence would take a hundred chapters if it was written by a chinese webnovel author

>>24842652why
>>24842631I'm not young. I played the *original* AD&D when it was still just manuals, dice, and paper. I admit, the *first* time or three a paperback might have come out with all the stats, it would have been novel and cute. But now? Its been taken to the extreme and its gotten silly. Reminds me of a five year old swearing. Yeah, its cute and a novelty. But if they swear all day at school, its a problem. I now understand the term "harem" as a paperback structure. What i can't imagine? Is adding stats to it.>you fucked [blonde] whore, +1 [dick] energybecause I just read about Harem mixed with stats, and the image I have in my head seems silly beyond belief. I'm not laming on WN's in general just that what seems totally normal, might be outlandish and we all don't realize it. I mean, at a furry convention? Non furry people are idiots. Of course the normal people aren't wearing panda suits and having fur-orgies.
>>24842653It would let the author create a difference between the MC living as a normal human, and someone living in a sect. As well as how the normies view cultivators. I like those sort of things
>>24842616The problem with that is that numbers on a screen ticking up don’t actually give you the progression dopamine. You need to see it in action. If you fail to actually show that things are getting easier, it’s just gonna be boring. It happens all the time in video games, especially with dynamic scaling. You go up 10 levels, but the enemies go up 10 levels too. Result: it’s fucking boring. You need to let them experience that power increase, because again that is what gives you the dopamine. Think about this concept distilled: idle games like cookie clicker. You get cookies. The number of cookies goes up. That alone is not addictive. Buying new upgrades is what makes it addictive. First it takes you a minute to buy a factory or whatever, then 30 seconds, then 15, then 5, then you’re buying em in bulk as you eye the next tier. That sensation of something being easier than it was before is what gives you the satisfaction. In a written story, seeing it in action means seeing the character do things more easily, and seeing the character do things they couldn’t before. If you don’t write that in, the numbers aren’t going to help. If you do, you don’t need the numbers. So really, the numbers aren’t doing shit. You could delete them and it would change nothing.>Happiness is the feeling that power increases that resistance is being overcome.

And it's a story, not a gameYou need to also consider that many of these stories are from Japan, Korea, and China. Their MMO market wasn't just World of Warcraft for 20 years and later a bit of Final Fantasy. They've had a wild amount of very popular and different MMOs over the years. Some of the most popular ones are relatively unknown in the west, like Lineage. Those games have followed a pretty different design philosophy compared to WoW and WoW clones. We had many games like that in the west too, but they've mostly died. Runescape's the only one that's still popular.

Overgeared is a great story but it's absolutely ridiculous and kind of unbelievable that anyone would play such a shit MMO like Satisfy. And I get like half the appeal in-universe of these VRMMORPGs in novels is that you get the 5 senses or someshit and you can live a "second life" or whatever but I don't think that would be enough for it to be as famous as it is (in this case Satisfy, but the point works for most of these games in stories).

I don't get this mmo argument. Most litrpgs I've read had some generic diablo tier stat levelling system, those authors probably played some arpg coops and that's it.
>>24842763Seems like an extreme stretch to explain the phenomenon just as the genre self-filtering authors for pure retards who don't play MMOs. >>24842766NTA but it's not that I hate it, it just has really bland characters and is so...inoffensive. Which is why it's the highest rated story on royalroad. a good score there doesn't mean a peak story, it means it doesn't make ANY controversial (read: interesting) decisions EVER. I would rather a story irritate me sometimes by taking risks than for it to be so completely lukewarm in every aspect.the ideas are interesting though. Definitely some fun stuff about the plot and setting. The limp emotional core turns me off hard though. I read for characters and emotion. That I finished the story does suggest that the other stuff is really good, which is probably why it's the darling of the autist litrpg crowdI'd give it like a 8/10, which is still one of the better royalroad stories

This thread's fatal flaw was branding itself as the web novel general instead of the slop general. We have one to three regulars who read the extreme outliers like Pale Lights, APGTS, or Worm (sff stories simply serialized) and think they're representative of the web serial scene and thus they belong in this thread. And then spend literally all day bitching about what 98% of the actual web novel scene is about.Just go to /sffg/ or /wg/ you utter cretins. You obviously belong there, not here. The whole point we split off of /wg/ is to get away from the tradfags who whined endlessly. As a long time regular I really do think we need to rebrand.

>>24842768I thought Overgeared was boring, so I dropped it early, but you probably have no idea how bad some MMOs can get. The most popular MMOs in Korea right now are MapleStory and Lost Ark. At one point the MapleStory devs "got too greedy" and players quit en masse and went to Lost Ark.Lost Ark is a relatively difficult PvE focused MMO, but you can swipe for more power than any free player. For example, Lost Ark has something called an Esther weapon. This requires such a ludicrous amount of rare drops and common materials that they are worth about $50,000 in USD. And you have to keep spending more and more as more content releases to keep your Esther weapon up to date. Lost Ark also has "world first" style races when new raids come out. They are organized by the developers themselves. Esther weapons give a massive advantage to the players in these races, sometimes allowing parties with multiple such weapons to entirely ignore some boss mechanics. Basically everyone taking part in these top races are whales. F2P cannot really compete. Some still do, people who play 12 hours a day and have since the game launched, but typically even those people are swipers, they just don't talk about it.And remember, this is the less greedy MMO compared to MapleStory. That's what modern Korean MMOs are like. When players put up with shit like that, do you think they'd care about some people getting crazy gear from RNG?.t someone that's played 11,000 hours of Lost Ark and my gear is not good enough for these races Pic related: top games in Korea this week

But it's also an introduction to another one of the five regions, their culture, different styles of gu masters, the world of high ranking mortal gu masters (and glimpses at the world of immortals), so on and so forth. It lays a lot of ground work for future arcs. Granted some editing would make it smoother and there are parts that could be cut down. Unfortunately some repetition and dragging is to be expected with the format. I'd pay good money for a revised, completed work.Still a good arc though, and one of the best if you count Imperial Court

>>24843164It's certainly not bad, but after the starting premise is set up, it struggles to get interesting outside of world building until the imperial court. Even with me enjoying the world building in RI significantly it was still a crawl to get to though. The imperial court is a massive gear shift which I struggle to count in the same arc, despite it being what it's been leading up to. I've almost forgotten enough to warrant another read. >>24844272That's what happens under a governmental system where might makes right and there's minimal rule of law.
Realistically what happened is that the RI spammer made the new /wng/ thread when this one was on page ~4. Then someone made a new /wng/ thread when this thread was on page ~8. Both got reported. The RI one got insta nuked, then they checked there were dupe reports on the other one too, with this thread also still being on page ~9. Then it got nuked as well.
