Unlearning the use of filter words/phrases is fucking hard

I have been getting into etymology recently and wanted to try my hand at writing something with as few loan words as possible so I decided I'd try to download some dictionary databases and create an editor that could look at my writing and see what words weren't germanic in origin. A few years back I watched some Anglish videos and thought it was interesting how there are linguist autists who are coming up with old english compound words to replace loan words that we often use today. Then I learned about several authors that revived dead words we no longer use. Tolkien is a good example, he used some words from Old English that were considered dead and now we once more use them again today.

Essentially I find it fun to learn about etymology and expand my vocabulary. Plus words from Germanic origin have a certain sovl to them. Pic rel is a paragraph that uses as many Germanic words as possible and you can see how it is mutually intelligible for languages of the same family.

I've renamed it Follower Growth to be more obvious what it's about, even though it's a good bit longer. It can't be helped. Average Followers Gained Per Day would be more both more and less accurate, but eh. The most accurate would be it dynamically updating all the values every day and charting it, but that's too much. This means that until I update the follower counts again, it'll be somewhat less than it should be, assuming they get more followers. New stories have higher rates that drop off over time, usually anyway.

The biggest flaw since the beginning was that the cultivation is just kind of something that happens parallel to the characters' growth rather than power being something that feels, you know, cultivated. It's fascinating that you can tell that most Isekai stories are written by literature and soft science people. Even characters that are supposed to be scientists rarely behave like people interested in science.

I'm reading a story right now where MC got isekai'd to a world where there are no stars in the night sky. He wonders about it for a whole 5 seconds and then shrugs. Now imagine if someone like Neil deGrasse Tyson got isekai'd into such a world. He'd lose his mind trying to glean every bit of information he could about this world because it's that fascinating. Most people into science aren't as enthusiastic about it as him, but they often do have behaviors that make them want to figure something out rather than just accepting it as is. This is especially true when something is out of the norm and unlike what their previous worldview was.

Characters getting isekai'd really should have more sense of wonder about being in an entirely other world. It wouldn't just all rest on the relationships the character makes in the new world.

The problem with that is that numbers on a screen ticking up don’t actually give you the progression dopamine. You need to see it in action. If you fail to actually show that things are getting easier, it’s just gonna be boring.

It happens all the time in video games, especially with dynamic scaling. You go up 10 levels, but the enemies go up 10 levels too. Result: it’s fucking boring. You need to let them experience that power increase, because again that is what gives you the dopamine.

Think about this concept distilled: idle games like cookie clicker. You get cookies. The number of cookies goes up. That alone is not addictive. Buying new upgrades is what makes it addictive. First it takes you a minute to buy a factory or whatever, then 30 seconds, then 15, then 5, then you’re buying em in bulk as you eye the next tier. That sensation of something being easier than it was before is what gives you the satisfaction.

In a written story, seeing it in action means seeing the character do things more easily, and seeing the character do things they couldn’t before. If you don’t write that in, the numbers aren’t going to help. If you do, you don’t need the numbers. So really, the numbers aren’t doing shit. You could delete them and it would change nothing.

You need to also consider that many of these stories are from Japan, Korea, and China. Their MMO market wasn't just World of Warcraft for 20 years and later a bit of Final Fantasy. They've had a wild amount of very popular and different MMOs over the years. Some of the most popular ones are relatively unknown in the west, like Lineage. Those games have followed a pretty different design philosophy compared to WoW and WoW clones.
We had many games like that in the west too, but they've mostly died. Runescape's the only one that's still popular.
