“Real Writers” Edition

Previous:>>24848643

Please remember that /wg/ is focused primarily on real writers—that is, authors writing frequently and with the intent to garner an audience. If you’re a sniff-your-own-butthole author, you are reluctantly allowed in this thread, if only because you’re technically on topic. But you will be made fun of at all opportunities.

Genre Fiction and Web Novelists welcome with wide arms. “Literary” authors should go to their containment thread: >>24851315

This isn't /wg/.

just finished the first draft of the novel I've been dreaming of writing for like 4 years. Need to run through to polish the prose, but I'm actually happy with it. Feels breddy gud senpai. Anyone else making progress towards longterm project?
>>
>>24851527
>ending
you should know arc endings and build toward them
>character arcs
most MCs are fairly static in sloppa, by nature of having to last millions of words (how much can you really change them?)
Side character arcs intertwined into plot arcs are compelling, however. Not strictly necessary though
>>
I'm having a problem with my webnovel. My main character is a princess/goddess/chosen-one/doctor/lawyer/engineer/surgeon/beauty-queen, and everybody loves her and simply falls to the ground at her feet when she walks by. My problem is, how do I differentiate my work with literally every female-written YA girlboss novel on the market today? Or should I just accept that there's absolutely nothing about my writing that would interest anyone, ever? Help me, web novel experts! I'm totally sincere about my dilemma. I've already written 742 chapters over the last three weeks and fear it's too late to start over.

This but my webnovel is about an aura farming necromancer with a harem and also a hot sister

>>24851545
I tried being myself, but it seems no one likes me when I'm myself, so now I'm trying to be someone else, writing a Mary Sue work about a perfect girl that never encounters any conflict she can't deflect instantly.
>>24851547
But writing a male MC is so gay. Also, the primary consumer of webslop is women, as well as men with a female mentality, i.e. faggots, so I don't want to alienate my potential fanbase.

More seriously though I agree. I struggle to read Royalroad's version of lesfic. I mostly read f/f wlw fic on ao3, of which 99% is undoubtedly lesbian authors writing about lesbian relationships.

The male authors on RR infantilize both of the female interests and present a really weird, childish, unrealistic view on romance that I find generally uncomfortable.

I've read 10s of millions of words of lesfic and 10s of millions of webslop serials and the only overlap that I enjoyed is Katalepsis—and I honestly didn't like the romance in that much. But probably because I prefer monogamy over polygamy
>>
>>24851666
seriously what is it with every web fiction author either writing asexual mcs or polygamous harems
>>
>>24851678
webslop authors are mostly men who don't understand romance so they either ignore it, or they write a purposefully indulgent view of it. I don't necessarily blame them because I'm pretty accepting, but yeah, that's the explanation I feel very confident in

As an lgb fiction writer, my biggest fear is that if one day I get minimally popular to warrant a fan subreddit, some unwanted readers will inevitably push for that rainbow+brown pride flag as the sub picture, and any attempt to remove it would be met with massive cancellation,
>>
>>24851720
you aren't a lgb fiction writer if you would push back against that

Of course, since the purpose of /wng/ types is only to ruin things why would they be in their own threads? They're not in their own thread right now, for example. Terrible people, very thankful the thread is gone.

also what’s the deal with trans authors, particularly male to female using such terms as “sapphic” instead of lesbian to describe their character’s romance? particularly if the character itself is male to female, and, owing to the nature of fantasy fiction, has attained the transgender ideal of completely transmogrifying their body from male to female.

Not kek, no. That would imply laughter. There should be something you type to imply impotent bitter seethe that your fake threads are gone.

I mean, none of my protagonists are ever straight, but I'm not a big supporter of identity politics to the point I wanted to see their symbols overtaking my work. So even if I wouldn't define myself as a "queer" author, past readers referred to me as one.

you know, you can tell yourself your above sloppa, that what you write has genuine literary merit, but if you force yourself to write some sloppa you get a lot of perspective on what it really is, instead of some repulsive ignorance.

>eldritch flower arranger
I actually have a side character planned out for what I'm writing that's literally this. The plan is that she's an [Eldritch Maid] in mc's manor that adventurers think is a dungeon. Lots of people try to kill her, including the owner of the manor (But in a tsundere kind of way). She also gets fun powers like summoning clean bubble slimes and corrupting flowers, but avoids direct combat for the most part. None of that's written up, though. I just wrote up the chapter where she gets introduced, but she doesn't have lines. Also, I didn't really plan on anyone being lesbian, but I do have a lot of female side characters, the more I think about it. Don't think I would write romance very good though, since I don't really read it.
>>

one chapter daily for about 20 days, then you slow down to a schedule you're consistent with, say every 2-3 days you write and publish a chapter. or once a week. it all boils down to if you outlined, have a ending in mind, and how fast you can write a chapter, line edit it, and have it out to release.
>>
>>24851850
how can someone justify this
there is no way the stuff youre publishing holds significance if youre writing chapters this often
no one has that much to say man
is it legitimately just imagination roleplay navel gazing?
what is special about this? how does this in any way foster your work profound?
i really dont want to believe that people dont care about writing something genuinely valuable, not just another indulgent materialistic possession.

>>

it's strongly advised you write a backlog before publishing, by that meaing basically just writing out the whole story, ideally. that's why outlining is also very crucial.

>>
Should a story about a public domain character be considered and tagged as fan fiction?
>>
>>24851678
>or polygamous harems
Because readers get attached to the first named characters. You can't have the MC romance someone and then drop her. Readers don't like that. Web novels take place over a long period of time. In reality a guy would have multiple relationships in that timeframe, but because of the above you can't write that. The solution to this is a harem. That way the first girl stays in the relationship with the MC.
>>
>>24851858
>there is no way the stuff youre publishing holds significance if youre writing chapters this often
keep in mind serialized webnovel chapters are in the range of only 1500-5000 words, much shorter than a typical book chapter.

It made sense, but I was a bit confused why you'd draw attention to these extremely minor details. Embrace your Mary Sue. Rename her Mary Sue. Mock your readers for not adoring Mary Sue. Push her Mary Sueness to such such insane giga-Sueness that it becomes comical. Make God himself fall in love with Mary Sue. Then push it further.

The thing is, everyone who writes a Mary Sue tries desperately to hide that she is a Mary Sue, and they fail. That's boring. That's cliche. Write the Mary Sue to end all Mary Sues. "My name is Mary Sue, Queen of Queens. Look on my millionaire vampire harem, ye mighty, and despair!."

";his foot barely missing [...] speeding car." and "a couple passed by [...] and Flynn dodged them" and the classic "a few seconds later" — consider removing all of that. The text is quite cumbersome to read, and for a chase scene it would improve the flow to avoid detailing something as usual as the protagonist passing by randoms on the street, unless they stopped him or developed him in some way, like "is the protagonist willing to shove a granny to keep up the chase?" and not merely dodging a couple [with linked arms] in one sentence, that's not described as a challenge, because it tells the reader nothing other than padding.

>What settings do you have characters in?
Urban hellholes and speculative horror, vaguely related to what you'd read on New Weird.
>How do you let the reader know a character is gay?
I make sure characters never define themselves as gay, but readers can get the idea based on a co-depedent friendship they have with another character, progressing a realized relationship over time. They're not spawned with the intent to not be straight, but going through a lot of dire circumstances eventually stitch them together.

>cultivation without taoism/qigong
Might as well be a completely different genre at that point, since those are the core of its identity. Just using it as a flavorless powerup system without the deep ties to traditional insane religious stuff would be a massive loss. Although that seemingly doesn't stop lots of royalroad authors from doing "litrpg cultivation" where qi is a glorified vidya xp system or some shit.

I wouldn't try it unless you're willing to go all out and write your own schizo deep lore based on catholic history & apocrypha (or maybe norse paganism).

I want to write a story about a programmer that gets isekai'd into a magical world where magic can be programmed. How autistic can I get with the magical system? Can I include actual snippets of magical code that's written using rune symbols or is that too much? Of course, I'll gradually build it up so even non-programmers can understand. My character will reverse engineer everything from scratch and start with basic spells and work his way up to building a magical computer device that makes him OP as fuck.

how about you anons talk about writing instead of engaging in this meaningless shitfit?

let me start: is it better to plan out the sentence-rhythm of your paragraphs, consciously limiting the length of each sentence so as to form an aesthetically pleasing and well constructed paragraph, or is losing yourself to the “flow” and writing in such a state generally superior to the former?

Because most people are illiterate peasants, the internet doesn’t exist, nor does the printing press, and magic knowledge is hoarded and kept secret.

Just the idea of creating a compiler to use more abstract programming (magic) languages is probably not something that would occur to 99% of people in such a scenario, and the few who did figure it out would gatekeep the fuck out of it. Meanwhile some CS sperg who has memorized every leetcode algorithm has the collective effort of millions of people behind him.

>>
I'm seeing double here! Six /wg/ threads!
>>
>>24852980
Why would that be the case? So access to literal magic that is programmable (and therefore probably accessible/not bound to bloodlines and innate abilities) didn't have any impact on civilization and technology? You are aware half the shit we use nowadays in CS are ideas we picked up from math nerds that lived hundreds of years ago, right?

Also, knowing fizzbuzz and being able to write a compiler are two different skills. Don't forget that your guy also doesn't have access to google, stack overflow or an llm, so his ability to pick up the knowledge of millions is non-existent. Try to write a simple CRUD REST endpoint for storing some data in a json file in assembly or cobol or something, without looking anything up on the internet, and you'll know what I mean. A compiler is a million times harder

If you want to write a story about magic that has programming--a logical structure--even go as far as to include fictional code snippets in your writing, but then make your entire worldbuilding completely retarded, then suit yourself.

I don't mind action movies where hackers smash at their keyboards to hack government secrets or whatever, but if something is central to your plot, like hacking, or fencing, or martial arts, you need to investigate it. And if it's this fictional magic system you came up with yourself, then you need to actually think things through about what kind of world such a magic system could realistically create.

What you're talking about isn't called "fiction", it's called a plot hole.

Okay, so there was this rich alien, right, and he wanted to make giant fighting robots, because they were cool, and he came with this idea to his other rich alien buddy, who owned a weapons manufacturing company. But he told them that this idea was retarded, that the robots are less efficient than jets and tanks, and they make much bigger targets and his idea made no sense at all.

But he wouldn't take no for an answer. So they had a row, and then ended up making a bet: they'd drop these super advanced robots on a relatively primitive planet, and see if the locals could, in 100 years, make weapons that could match them: and the weapons manufacturer alien guy said they'd probably be tanks and jets.

And that's why everyone is fighting with giant robots. The bet was like 10-20 years ago, and the humans didn't have the time yet to reverse-engineer a counter-weapon.

See how that makes a lot more sense than people living with programmable magic for thousands of years, and yet their world is somehow the 9th century, Western Europe, but with the occasional wizard?
>>
>>24853204
That's not a real explanation though. Real giant robots would still lose to missiles and bombs even if aliens made them. You shouldn't write Sci Fi if you can't explain it.

That's not a real explanation, and you should stop commenting if you can't even figure that one out.

This is true but let's not pretend /wg/ was a quality general either
It had become the equivalent of a general chat on trooncord with one or two excerpts (a lot of which were repeated from previous threads because everyone ignore them JFL) peppered here and there.
And need I remind you that most of the post from the last serious /wg/ thread (before webniggers started raiding us) were you retards goofing around with a fucking IQ calculator?
>>
>>24853337
Anon, would you rather be underpaid or overrated?
>>

That IQ calculator really triggered the below average intelligence writers ITT

I still vastly prefer that to the feminized personal drama that was previously confined to /wng/. You really need to go back.

Yet another shining example of why /wng/ers need to go back. You can pop estrogen pills like they're Cheetos if you want, but do it far, far away from us.

Either the chink spammer wants to see every writing general nuked or /wg/fags would rather lost their general than having to share it with /wng.jeets

>>
>>24852637
It fell apart because jannies deleted the new threads. Maybe if they had moderated the spammer in the first place it wouldn't have happened.
>>24852680
It conveys what's happening, but not particularly well. The sentences are all over the place. Take the first line. It would read much better as:
>On the second day it was Luna's turn to lie in bed. She was in so much pain that she could not move at all.
The other sentences could be improved in similar ways.
>The old lady went into the room, asking in concern.
Whose POV is this written in? If it's Luna's then it should be "came into the room".
There's a bunch of telling in the conversation as well, but maybe that's fine for brevity.
>>
Chapter whipped up over course of today, lemme have your guys thoughts. Only about 1.6k words. Trying out a new paste site but I think I'll stick to rentry because it doesn't seem to format markdown text (at least straight from Scrievener) and I can't edit them after publication.

>>24853792
The spammer is likely making the new threads and self-deleting them. It's not like jannies to delete threads as quick as three minutes on a slow board
>>
>>24853684
Web novels are having their reckoning. Nobody likes them or wants them in their threads, but mods are deleting web novel general threads so they're being shoved in with other people who don't want them around.
>>
>>24853811
It's pretty good however the dialogue is awful. Why write these retarded half sentences? they are horrible and feel like they were written by a 12 yo.

I'm the guy who originally brought it up and frankly I'm too lazy. I was lurking #4chan 24/7 when 4chan was offline earlier this year but honestly it's a pain to get in and remember where I wrote down my nickname password.

I'd rather put that effort towards my writathon fiction, already up to 5 followers! I know I need to get into the forums and arrange shoutout swaps but, again, too lazy. I'd rather stack backlog chapters so I have something to throw at my paying patrons (at least two chapters ahead of RR).
>>
>>24853925
This happens a lot with new janny/mod faves for some reason.
They hire all these new guys, at great cost, and then don't even bother to check if they're modding properly or being insane and trying to enforce board culture changes.
Ofc it would help if any of the OP's said what message they got when the threads were removed and if they got a ban.
>>
>>24854212
I got a warning for "off topic"
>>
>>24854228
Yeah it's a weird grudge then. Probably not even someone who's aware of what goes on in the thread, just an outerlit poster trying to be a snob since the catalog is full of offtopic or pseduo on-topic threads
>>
>>24854232
I got banned for posting a RR link when the context was a guy asking about stories with robots in them, so I linked one I really liked. It was a whole 7 days so I was bit a miffed and told him if we can't even share free stories, either our own or non-anons, then maybe it's time for both /wg/ and /wng/ to go. I pointed out I was kind of aware of their MO where they just look at the report at face value and don't actually read the room, and said these threads were for this purpose of sharing with fellow writers and readers. I was unbanned thankfully. There definitely was someone trying to weaponize reports that way (I even said this in the appeal as well) and I imagine from the stretched-then janny manpower on /lit/, blanket deleting these threads is easier for them than simply dealing with all these individual reports.

Any books or advice on how to write in the airport novel style?
I’ve been enjoying Lee Child, Michael Crichton, and pretty much every other of these boomer thriller novels. There’s a love for life and an excitement to explore the world that I find refreshing.
It’d be cool to bring this sentiment over to fantasy.

Spend time with the name. maybe make it funn' sounding, but it becomes clear later. Mary-ann Susannah? Or, just name her "Anna" and make it a runnng gag if so-and-so ifs..." going to marry SUE".

have fun with it, and make the reader kick themselves when they "get it". be subtle then go over the top. I like the idea of starting with too much, then going on from there. If you can't avoid it then lean into it.

I wrote one that had a side character that was a lesbian lawyer and aided the male (straight) MC on his quest for first survival and finally extracting revenge. The antics her lesbian girlfriend put through her were comedy relief. I like it because I get to juxtapose what women think theyare when lesbian, versus what they really are.
