This is a difficult question to answer. It is almost certain that the scriptural record, including the gospels (given their contradictions) is imperfect.

If one assumes that Smith was not who he claimed he was, the existence of the Book of Mormon becomes a fascinating question.Harold Bloom never doubted his sincerity and suggested "magical dream states" were involved in the production, but this interpretation seemed to disregard the existence of the plates, which to Smith were real and which had definite location in the house during translation--which would seem to make less likely the idea that Smith was merely deluded and sincere. How did the Book of Mormon come to be? For a 23 year old to write a 270,000 word book of real merit of consistent tone and complex structure, is no small accomplishment.
