>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

It’s interesting to see how differently a tradpub writer approaches writing a web novel. His opening is both quicker to get the MC started adventuring and doing stuff, but also stretches out the setup for much longer. A typical web novel would finish setting up the backstory and premise by chapter 1, or chapter 2 at the latest. But this dude took eight whole chapters. Short ones, sure, but the difference in approach is evident.
I hate his lol-so-random Reddit prose with a passion though, so I won’t be reading any further.

My brother has this problem. He told me it's hard to come up with characters and settings and it's just easier to write fanfiction where that's already done. It's kinda sad. >>
>>25026022
It's actually quite a lot of fun, especially once you get commenters speculating about where the story is going each time a chapter drops. I had a really good arc where a side character was introduced as sus, readers were lulled into complacency, and then the inevitable betrayal happened at the worst moment and everyone got pissed at him again and then commenters seemed to understand the whole character arc and why it happened.

However it's a lot of work and the audience for webnovels is very particular, depending on which website you post on. Stories that aren't "on market" won't get a lot of readers and won't get engaged commenters. So there are better, more rewarding and satisfying hobbies unless you really really like writing webnovel slop for its own sake.

So here I'm making just about enough money that I can pay most of the bills, but not enough that I could afford to eat too, and am slowly headed to an inevitable bankruptcy despite having an appreciating audience and story to tell. It's so unbelievably frustrating. I can only either have faith that it can still grow, or try to write another, hopefully more successful story in tandem, or just off myself and get out of this infernal hamster wheel.

I got an idea for a story.

A young girl named accidentally brought to the dreamlike World by a spirit guide, she discovers she must recover six aspects that represent her life force to return home.
She journeys through surreal realms themed after the four seasons, battling monsters and building magical companions to restore the natural flow of time.
Ultimately, defeats the forces of stagnation, balancing the seasons and learning to embrace the cycle of life and death before finally returning to the real world.

What do you guys think?

It's fine as long as the mc is male and there is no romance, teen drama, sex/smut/porn/harem.
>>
>>25026798
I cannot write the book if it's only going to be allowed on Ao3. I guess I need a new plot.
>>
>>25026801
Well err my protagonist is female and I guess there is teen drama? She learns about accepting things to change and that death is a part of life. Usually by helping people in the spirit world face their own demons while she searches for pieces of her soul.
it's a girl coming of age story.
why does sex, smut, porn and romance do so badly on RR?

>IMO backfill it later if I need to
the issue is almost never starting too late, but too early
>>
>>25026806
>why does sex, smut, porn and romance do so badly on RR?
For one they changed the rules to be far more puritan. They don't want no trouble.
Second, for romance, there are loveless losers on the site who hate it, and there are autists who hate anything that isn't explicitly progression -slop of their preferred flavor (litrpg, cultivation, etc).

You can write chaste, puritan, adults only romance if you want just don't expect it to be popular. You'd be better off cross-site posting and trying to monetize via amazon(KU) rather than the traditional RR+patreon (and maybe KU).
>>
When you guys talk about romance do you mean as a minor subplot or a major plot?
>>
>>25026811
>should
You should start your story at precisely the moment at which the plot becomes inevitable. The moment of change, from the normal status quo to the chaos that leads to the new status quo, during which your protagonist exerts their will to influence the chaos and effect change.

You can do whatever you want though. I wasn't feeling that kind of start at first, so I started with my MC's childhood, wrote 8k words, and then the next day I wrote a more typical, gripping opening chapter that I was happy with, now that I knew my MC and his history better.
>>
I got an idea for a story.

a wandering bard named Lyric is invited to perform at a grand celestial coronation on the secluded Isle of Echoes. He soon realizes that the entire island is caught in a recurring three-day cycle controlled by a dark archmage who wishes to freeze a moment of absolute power for eternity.

To escape, Lyric must use his enchanted lute to manipulate the memories of the islanders, gathering clues and allies across different versions of the same days. By sabotaging the coronation and exposing the archmage's true nature, Lyric works to shatter the temporal seal and restore the natural flow of time to the world.

what do you guys think?
>>
>>25026806
>it's a girl coming of age story.
I guess you can still write a wn about it, but why not write a story set in modern day usa, maybe a school life teen drama without fantasy elements? It would just be so much easier to write and you would also reach a much wider audience.
>>
>>25026833
Both
>>
>>25026833
For me, both. I added a minor romance subplot to my story and people complained she was annoying and they didn't get why she was attractive to the main character (I didn't describe her tits enough).

https://www.royalroad.com/fictions/rising-stars?genre=romance_main

That said, there are some high follower counts on the Romance RS list. And the lowest number of followers on that list is 72.

I think maybe it's just that men who want to read romance read haremslop on KU, and women who want to read romance read romantasy either from booktok or also on KU (and AO3 for their unspeakably vile smut needs).

If you want to write romance just do it.
>>
>>25026842
I think that's Majora's Mask
>>
>>25026833
Major plot I think romance is a big deal and important for characters exhibiting growth.
I'm currently writing a story about an autistic vampire who realizes the only person he ever loved died 200 hundred years ago and the story is mostly him traveling around killing demons and getting over her.

A typical story goes like this:
Once upon a time, there was… Every day, he would… He always wanted to… but he couldn’t because of his one flaw, which was… But then one day, that all changed when… So now, he must… Otherwise, he risks losing…
The point where it all changed is called the catalyst. Most stories start a few hours before, during, or slightly after the catalyst.
If you start before, you get to introduce the readers to the MC and his normal daily life before shit hits the fan. However, you risk boring the readers and making them stop reading before reaching the good part.
If you start during or slightly after the catalyst, you get to jump right into the good part, but you have to spend time drip-feeding the backstory to the readers later. This isn’t always a bad thing, since you can treat it as, “Ooh, an MC with a mysterious backstory. So cool.”

The idea of writing to the general audience ever shortening attention span is nothing new.
If anything, paperbacks from the 1950s get to the point so much faster than contemporary books that like to drag on a plot point for over a hundred chapters. Even stuff from the 30s starts with Conan already in a sword fight. Long overdrawn intros like Tolkien were the exception, not the rule.

MC gets the legendary once in a gorillion years hero class, but it's broken and only has one starter ability: basic attack. One misunderstanding leads to another, and now he has no choice but to fight ever stronger foes without letting his secret slip.

so when I finish this book and prepare for a big front load, followed by episodic releases, how do I get readers? I don't care about money, i just want comments, ratings, just someone to say they liked it, I'm willing to grind, I have a series i've been updating daily for 2 months and have 6 followers (fucking had 8 but I lost two, NO COMMENTS so i don't know what turned them off) and no ratings

Contrary to what booktokers say you don't have to charm the reader with the first sentence.
When you start a story you have until the reader figures out the first scene to hook them. It's not about the first sentence, paragraph, chapter or even the scene, but rather until the reader figures it out. That's why generic openings seem boring - the reader figures them out more quickly.

In media res is meant to help with this. If the story starts out with action then it's harder for a reader to be sure that they figured things out correctly. If the story, instead, starts with the morning routine, then the reader will immediately know what's going to happen and become bored. Then it's random whether they continue reading or not.

How do you hook a reader? Present them with a mystery they want an answer to, promises of tropes that they might like, and/or unfairness that they want resolved.

An easy example would be a harem/romance for men story that starts out with the female live interest being abused and her just taking it. It sets up the trope of MC eventually saving her and falling in love, a mystery about why she takes the abuse (what power do the abusers have over her?), and the face slapping that the villains take. (Btw this is the start of Cinderella.)
>>
>>25027782
>An easy example would be a harem/romance for men story that starts out with the female live interest being abused and her just taking it
That's a fucking terrible way to start a male oriented romance. I'd drop that instantly with extreme prejudice. That's what women want, no what men want.
>>
>>25027786
what do men want?
>>
>>25027787
Women who aren't dead weight.
>>
>>25027789
Got it, writing a story where my protagonist recruits a party of capable women.
>>
>>25027793
See, you're already getting closer to generic harem territory despite the bad start.
Relating to what you're saying, my experience has been you need to have an actual aesthetic style you're pushing with your story. I read inhuman amounts of slop, of wildly varying quality and originality, and the only thing that consistently predicts whether I get past the first few pages is the writer having some sort of aesthetic sensibility.
In your first few chapters, style is absolutely more important that substance, because style sets the mental image the reader creates of the characters and setting. You need to pose unanswered questions and create a strong image in the reader's mind.

To relate it to a more visual media, think of how interesting the presentation of a movie like John Wick is compared to Marvel slop. John Wick isn't deeper or more cerebral than Marvel slop, it's just got infinitely more style.
>>
>>25027693
As long as I get the money I don't really care about the rest. Audiobooks aren't really worth much of anything, it seems to me.
>>
>>25027746
>I have a series i've been updating daily for 2 months and have 6 followers
Frankly, this is only possible if your work is utterly, completely, absolutely illegible, as in total repulsive gobbledygook, where nothing makes any sense. In which case no amount of ads or tags or shoutouts is going to save you. These aren't issues that are solved with a quick tip or two. You probably need a professional doctor.
>>
>>25027746
>I have a series i've been updating daily for 2 months and have 6 followers (fucking had 8 but I lost two, NO COMMENTS so i don't know what turned them off) and no ratings

This is just straight up false. The tropes are common for a reason. You might not like it, but that doesn't mean others don't. Every love interest in a xianxia harem story is a damsel in distress and (male) readers love that shit.

The problem with authors who write based on their mood is that we forget we possess more emotions than just pure determination and excitement.
If you hit a wall and don’t feel like writing a certain part then no amount of motivational video is going to change that.

So write nonlinearly.

Start with a vague outline, either of the entire book or just one arc at a time. Slowly add details and refine the prose as you go.
Move up and down the timeline, writing whatever you want, whenever and wherever you want.
Do you want to write action scenes for Chapters 3 and 7 today? Do it.
Did you just wake up with an idea for a heartfelt dialogue near the end of the book? Write it down.
If you’re feeling a bit navel-gazing, focus on your descriptions and nothing else.
Feeling sad? Write the tragic scenes. Feeling angry? Write the part where the protagonist goes on a rampage.
If you don’t want to write that tedious scene, jump ahead or backward and come back to fill it in later.
If you forgot to include foreshadowing or backstory, simply find the right spot and drop it in.
That opening is too long? Cut it out.
Since you're working in bullet points, moving stuff around is easy.
Build your outline over weeks or months, then once you reach your target word count, simply remove the bullets. And there, you have your draft.

How does literature solve the archmage class being way more flashy than any other class problem?

archmage vs archmage - Crazy spectacle with elementals flying off and reality bending spells like a black hole being shot off, permanently scarring the land scape.

Cultivator/Warrior/Hero fights - bonking each other and doing gay little stabs or arrows until enemy dies.

I'm glad you like it. I'm planning to make him great at things no one gives a shit about that he was mediocre in when he was a prime archmage. stuff that fell out of fashion due to the advancement of magic. but the first first 100 chapters are just him getting btfo by rookie mages thinking his ancient archmage knowledge is valuable when really the reason they stopped doing things was because people invented better ways to cast.

That aside I would like to make a normal income from patreon/royalties just to balance out my minimal daily expenses but it's not crucial. I guess... My author-hero is kamachi.exe so I'd be content to write maybe half as many words as he does.
I'd also like to get a professional pass (with pen name) for nerd conventions but I don't think I'm getting one this year. I may have to do a collab with a professional I already know and make a one-shot floppy comic just to pigeonhole myself in their stupid application process.

I like to listen to audiobooks when I'm cooking, running or exercising.
Furthermore, I read if I'm engrossed, some books like the perfect I wouldn't have finished without audiobooks, but more than that a good performance can really enhance the story.
When I reread cradle I narrate in my head as Travis baldree.
>>
>>25028288
>They're read at a glacial pace and it just sounds awkward
I think most regular audio book readers bump up the playback speed. I put it on 1.5x to 2x depending on the narrator. If I get bored as fuck I even bump it up to 2.5x or more until it gets interesting again, though at that point I'm very close to dropping.
>Is this some kind of American thing that I won't understand?
It's not unusual for some authors to make more royalties from audiobooks than their ebook. This is especially true in the litrpg scene where lots of readers just turn that shit on during work and listen to a book every two days passively.

I live a normal, in fact frugal lifestyle. Everything is just expensive in the United States, especially housing.
Also you definitely just lucked into money or have your parents supporting you, so you shouldn't speak when finances come up. Pretending $1500 is a lot in first world countries is comical

I've seen what americans consider "frugal" and there's the real joke. I guess living can get pretty expensive when you need to call an air lift just to get out of your house, being too fat to fit through the door
>>
>>25028273
This seems impossible. Property taxes, utilities, grocery, health insurance, car insurance alone seems like it would burn through that, and I'm excluding rent since you say you own.
Do you not have a car? Do you live off rice and beans? What first world country can you live without major compromises in for 1500 a month?
Who is paying your bills?

People are reluctant to use fem MC's I wonder how marketable male MCS are.
Also do people even bother including cute mascots for the plushie or figurines? at most I think you could concept a cool t-shirt but I still think mascots or female characters are more marketable than cool sotic heroes.
but maybe it's naive to think male readers are even buying this type of slop, maybe we should be going after fujos.
>>
My gross as a retail slave is $1560 a month. My goal is to make enough to quit my job and write full time, which I once worked out to requiring a gross of around $2200 because of higher taxes for self employment. In practice it'll probably take more, so my current target is $2500.
>>
>>25028368
>I've seen what americans consider "frugal" and there's the real joke.
I actually agree but that's because the median wage is like 5000. So 4000 would be frugal to them, and that's plenty to live off of.
The basic costs of living easily go over 2500 though, assuming you want to live alone in a non-roach-infested 1bedroom apartment and have minimum-level insurance. 1500 means living with multiple roommates and going uninsured.
>>
>>25028387
When you have a male MC you can just make all the marketing and merchandising be about the heroines. That's how the Japanese do it usually. Or you can make the male characters cool too and then they will move merch as well. I mean, look at Raildex, or Slayers. Accelerator and Gourry move merch.
>>
>>25028372
>without major compromises
Of course it takes compromises. If you want something, you usually have to give up something else for it. It's the people who want everything, who never have enough money, and are bitterly jealous of the choices of others.

nta-- what are they reading it for? i dont know what this is. arent the point of these progression series the MC?
>>
>>25028154
Only read the first chapter so far and I gotta say that your dialogue is really bland and emotionless. Also not much going on so far besides setup and character intros. From my understanding, RR readers would prefer to be thrown into the action faster. Also zero stakes which makes me not care what happens next.
>>
>>25028539
In the case of pic related everyone is reading it because the elf is hot. The MCs progression litRPG mechanics where status effects are actually the strongest and DPS is cringe is not why anyone is reading it.
>aieeeeee I was banished to the harshest max level dungeon for the crime of having a sub-optimal class!
>I survived though, and will be silly and choleric and get my revenge on them all with my skills (actually OP)

Having a good artist and a cute heroine can save your slop, at least in Japanese markets.

i have an idea for a web novel.
In a speculative mystery, a doomed traveler is spared from a lethal strike by a phantom benefactor who equips him with the power to fracture the flow of time. He navigates a shifting landscape of past and present, weaving through the gears of history to dismantle the circumstances of his own murder. As he drifts between ages, he discovers that his life is merely a pawn in a long-standing occult experiment
>>
>>25028864

the anime adaptation of this was hilariously underbudgeted, but I loved some aspects of the story, like how the girls are being constantly threatened to be raped. The author has no idea how to make a character seem evil aside from just making them a rapist.

I blame myself for being unable to communicate more clearly about the things in my head, sorry. But boy do you have a very particular concept of yakuza boss' daughter. I'm also kind of thinking of italian organized crime families, too, on top of the manga conception from shows like Nisekoi.

Your picture is actually really good too, just some of the angle is a little off for aura purposes. But like that could totally be her holding her intimidation/torture knives when MC gets black-bagged and dragged to her hideout to answer for fucking up one of her deals with his MC plot bullshit. Take it, I own nothing.
Might I suggest listening to the other anon though.
I made that off civitai, and there are loads of websites where you can just play around with free credits and experiment with models.
The only downside I'd say is most models I have encountered on those websites are heavily anime leaning or furry leaning due to the type of images they've been trained on, if you want more realism, mid-journey might do you better.

Here's a catbox so you can get the metadata intact.
https://files.catbox.moe/1vjz4y.jpeg

But you really could get something better / more specific if you messed around.
Come to think of it, maybe the OP should have a tutorial of how to generate a quick and easy AI cover because it's the meta of RR these days.

>5th century
Man inventing usury and credit default swaps is just not the play for that time period when instead you could be inventing stirrups, arithmetic, arabic numerals if needed, ZERO, a base ten system if needed, crop rotation, nutrition studies, a concept of hygiene and disease-causing germs, and if you remember enough trigonometry, accurate to scale maps.
Honestly an MC who thought "hmmm I'm a lazy piece of shit, I'm going to invent fractional reserve banking and lend money at interest" deserves everything he gets, when simply spreading soap around and getting doctors to wash their hands would have them lauded as a hero.
Here's another freebie: explaining that mosquitos come from still water, and getting the tyrannical overlord to order their subjects to remove all pools of standing water and drain swamplands near urban centers.
Nahhh man we gotta like invent fiat currency and student loans!

>I own nothing
I pray for your happiness.
A guide like that would be useful, because damn there's too many of these ai sites nowadays.
I wish my illustrator friend wasn't so busy and it wasn't so hard to go back and forth with him about making small changes that have big changes to the mood of the piece I want. Also I'm sadly not made of money.
Thanks again!

Isekai this, antiquity that. I prefer not to live in an era without plumbing and air conditioning.
Maybe the MC can be a mage who revolutionized the world with his magical “inventions.”
It took two hundred years for people to accept germ theory. Refrigerators, ACs, and other conveniences were adopted nearly instantly. It doesn’t take a genius to see which would print money quicker.
>>
>>25029365
Germ theory
>one of many causes of diseases with really complicated models for how it works and how to treat it
Air conditioning and refrigeration
>magic box that makes cold just by flipping a switch to turn it on

Yeah one's going to get accepted faster. Hell germ theory is only even accepted today because it's indoctrinated into children who don't know any better.

I mean you can invent AC but dealing with refrigerant is a pain in the ass and soap already existed it just wasn't used as much as it should have been for proper hygiene. Easy cultural fix.

Gets isekaied as a nobleman’s son
Born with low magic aptitude
Treated poorly by family and servants alike
Relegated to an old mansion for being a family’s embarrassment
Starts doing magical experiments because having no modern conveniences sucks
Rescues some OP girls who have fallen on hard times
They become his loyal servants
Starts a company without his family knowing
Secretly becomes the richest man in the kingdom while keeping a low profile because edge kino
Is ordered to enter the academy with his estranged siblings
Occasionally has face-slapping moments
Occasionally uses his OP magic weapons like the holy kamikaze drones to defeat the villain of the arc
Becomes a power in the shadows who is said to pull the strings behind the scenes
One might say… an eminence in shadows! Dun, dun, dun!

Imagine an Isekai fantasy novel where mana is stored in the boobs. The more mana you have the bigger the boobs. When you use up mana your boobs shrink and when your mana pool fills up again they grow.

MC gets isekai'd into the a recently awakened mage. His boobs are unusually large for his level of experience which invites plenty of jealousy. MC also has to grapple with being weirded out by his new body.

I've been reading Hundred Reigns. The best part is when Ballsack is revealed to be a total dickhead, otherwise there's really not that much interesting happening (in ways that are RR-typical).

I need to read /wng/ web novels, I realized something last night. I don't understand what it takes to write a web novel, What people want and how it differs from a normal story.
Hopefully FFF unlucky antagonist gives me the direction I need.
