GF and I both have COVID. We were going to the art museums in Richmond for Valentines, but we're both just creeping to the kitchen for grilled cheeses. Just finished Lispector's "Hour of the Star," going to spend the rest of this late afternoon/early evening catching up on litmags, and then I'll eat an edible and a half and play Team Fortress 2 for a few hours. Might read one of the ebooks I've got kicking around though, last week I ripped a bunch of novellas in translation off Anna's Archive from r/rsbookclub recommendation threads. >>25088594In what context?
What people don't get is that humans may be animals but we're not actually bound to being animal-like. Like you have all these looksmaxxer guys saying, "Oh bro life has always just been about eating, sleeping, fucking, power struggles, etc. for all of human history. All girls care about is jawline and canthal tilt. Christian values just hid the truth". People don't realize that this "animal instinct" in humans has lived in constant struggle with the desire for something greater in our species as a whole, and that there are times where the latter genuinely wins out, which produces basically everything good in our lives. So it's really just terribly strange to me that so many countless men consider themselves "trad", while genuinely believing in this animalistic argument that none of their ancestors would have taken seriously. To define man by his animal nature is just the biggest absurdity imaginable.

>>25088609Yeah, people often neglect the importance of The Understanding. Most of all, I remember hating one argument that beauty, and beautiful environments, was just related to the environments that helped survive, reproduce, fitness, this is the same kind of narrow overexplaining things by the animal system, which falls at the first mention of environments that are both beautiful and bad for human life.A woman will find a man attractive partly due to the animals instincts' reaction to signals of fitness, sure, but also in reaction to a process of understanding, specifically to assessing a man's power. In the eyes of a woman, a man will seem much greater if he has assets, if he has eyes pointed at him, if has minions, if he has dignity, if he is seated high on a chair surround by symmetry, all of these contribute to a man's presence, and all of these create desires just as well as the animalistic instincts.I never quite noticed that indeed that movement that blends neotrads and looksmaxxer tends to over-rely on the fine grain science approach to things, are there really people that are aesthetics-christian and looksmaxxer at the same time? not sure if they're not movement that are evolving in parallel instead. I also hate the rise of the word 'dopamine' everywhere, although it is technically correct to use it, we have gained no greater power of explanation through its use; the only thing that emerges in my opinion is that it puts a greater emphasis on seeing the body as an uncontrollable process from which we suffer, it just externalizes our processes, and zooming in on dopamine makes it harder to zoom out on us, the whole body and mind, and ask about the role of willpower on those processes; it's in line with the feminine attitude to treat the body as some kind of external, uncontrollable creator of foreign harm, an eternal constraint, an overpowering enemy. "you feel good because of dopamine" is never the explanation I'm looking for, not anymore than "this is true because evolution and animal instincts explain it fully". I don't have a good quote to share, but I'm sure I read somewhere a comment by Nietzsche or someone else about that use of Reason and Science to further hedonistic, animalistic rationalization

why did /lit/ suddenly stop talking about books? i came here a year ago to get some juicy book recs to pad my goodreads account now it's all ventposting and twitter screencaps.
>>25088857The site, over time, drifted from a place for people passionate about a particular interest congregating to discuss that interest to a place people use as a hangout/chatroom/parasocial friend simulator. General threads are a big symptom of this, people don't organically start a thread about what they want to talk about but congregate in pseduo-Discord channels, where they recognize other personalities and make ritualposts and so on because their goal isn't to discuss the topic at hand but hang out in the thread for the topic at hand, which isn't the same thing. This is a downward spiral, because the more people who engage in pseduosocial behavior rather than just discussing things they are passionate about, the more posts in any given thread become not really about the topic of that thread at all, making threads go faster with less topic-based discussion, which then frustrates and even drives away the original posters who just wanted to discuss the thing while encouraging pseduosocial posters. Eventually the majority of a recurring thread is just off topic pseudosocial spam only tangentially referencing the stated topic of the thread. This eventually poisons entire boards, and leads to posters creating threads purely to engage in pseudosocial behavior through clickbait and reply bait - the twitter screencap threads, template threads, outrage bait, that kind of thing.

But if I am to be defended If I am ever murdered, I'd rather have people honor my spirit by demanding reparations on the grounds that they loved me, and that losing me was a terrible loss to them, rather than to make some appeal that by dying some illustrious, innate, abstract, right to life had been breached, It's just nonsense that destroys every beautiful attachment; I find it beautiful when people are attached to other individualities, not to some ideals. >You want idiot brutality to rule the world? No, I want egoistic love, because to love everyone is to love no one, or rather it's just to love the idea of a person, which is to say a shallow generality. >I love you because you are a human, and nothing moreFuck you, fuck you, fuck you, stop making me a tool to your projects of mind, stop projecting your self-hatred and desire for salvation through unconditional love on me
>>25088877This thread's OP here (and not all threads OP), wtf is the point of letting the thread linger, please explain? Why is it 'better' to let it go on slowly? In relation to what goal? What does making a new thread destroy anyway? What's a better standard practice? What's a better heuristic for starting a new thread? And anyway I responded to some guy's desire to start a new thread primarily, should the thread not serve its users? and from seeing past threads, they're all renewed in the same manner, at about the same reply count, and follow the same cycles where the longer it goes on, the more pointless and short the posts become, so why should I not continue a tradition of just renewing a thread when it gets slow, shortly after bump limit. Again, I'm really struggling to understand is what I am destroying by making a new thread anyway? they're all linked to one another

>>25088879Unfortunately /lit/ is going the way of /v/ back when 90% of the posters didn't play the video games they were talking about, and it became more of hangout space than a video game discussion board. The same thing happened to /sp/. Both boards went through an in-between state when memes and trolling were rampant - the high point of both boards imo (rip lyl). Then they morphed into autistic hugboxs. After all the trolls moved on and left, the only posters who remained were the dedicated that actually cared about the topic of their board, and the newcommers who literally came from reddit and facebook. Trying to fit in, they regurgitate the same three memes that were popular when they arrived. This was during the great exodus of the oldfags and the dawn of the new 'board culture' (it was precisely when this phrase was coined that the actual board culture, if there ever was one, died)/lit/ is such a slow board that the change has been slower-coming, and the memes and trolling couldn't catch fire like they could in a faster-paced environment. The result is that if you stepped away from /lit/ for a year or longer and came back it seems to have changed overnight into reddit ,or any other corner of the internet these days , where a handful of autists have made it their little home. Anonymous posting gives the illusion there is some kind of small, evolving community, but in reality it's probably like 20 dedicated posters at this point, and a handful of transient ones.
Saw a true 10/10 today. The kind of girl you think about for days afterwards, I’m sure of it (the days have yet to elapse, it’s only been a few hours). See pretty girls about a lot, but this one was different. Incredibly striking - words don’t do it justice. She was standing at the self-checkout with her mother, a weathered facsimile of her daughter with jet black hair, leopard print leggings, Ugg boots, shiny black belt and jangly trinkets round her wrist, hoop earrings. The girl looked expressionless as her mother fiddled with the machine (“unexpected item in packing area … please wait for assistance,” the assistance never arriving, mother looking about helplessly with one hand on her hip, purse in the other). Daughter standing straight and looking down. Daughter dressed very plainly. I don’t even remember what she looked like, besides long brown hair. We locked eyes at one point. I think because I was queuing with only a small chocolate bar, I was clearly waiting, my situation seemed starkly in contrast with the people with their overflowing trolleys and baskets piled on top of baskets of stuff all needing to be scanned. My situation was streamlined, hers was distressed. Then help arrived and they were gone. I took a screenshot on my phone to mark the time. It’s a long shot, but I’ll come again. Weird.

Generally speaking every other slur is good-to-go across 4chan: you can say kike, you can say wop, you can say chink, you can say wetback, and so on and so forth, and you won't get banned. But I have seen people banned for using the n-word outside of /b/. Or, at least I used to. In the last year or two I've seen posts with that word get left up, especially on certain boards like /sp/. Driving home, thinking about life. For once this did not result in despair and dread. Thought something like: I definitely did not need to suffer the way I did in the past, and a lot of that was a consequence of my own actions, but if there's something I was put on earth to do then maybe it hasn't happened yet, and what came before will serve to prepare me for it. And maybe if there's a bigger plan for all of this my poor choices weren't necessarily part of it but that doesn't mean I can't be transfigured anyway. Maybe this is silly and what they call "cope" but since my thought patterns usually tend towards beating myself up and feeling horrible all the time it wasn't so bad. I guess I can keep trying a little longer.

There is a common objection people have toward God and the dogma one finds in the standard faiths around the world, yet almost everyone has some lingering spiritual thirst. There are also those who are completely at ease with something homomorphic to the line that "it's all just chemicals." When seeking that spiritual bone within oneself, the lattermost category of people have a very difficult time. However, there seems to be something of a correspondence. In mathematics, this could be seen as something like the correspondence between varieties and coordinate rings. Whatever you call it, however you word it, it still does the same thing if you are seeking the positive effects of some flavor of spiritual conversion. By acknowledging the cope that you are just anthropomorphizing the synapses and their labyrinthian connections as God, you still fail to erase its efficacy. You can have all the benefits just by switching your language and calling that God. You can attach qualities that don't make you cringe later if you want, but moving in that realm is much easier than moving in the realm of nerve endings, and you can be aware that you're doing the same thing. It's like a change of basis in a vector space, or using geometric arguments to find things out about polynomials or curves. Just change the way you think about it, and solve after that transformation, and the solution pulls back perfectly. It turns out you don't have to believe at all.

Women who indulge in subtle, teasing lewdness, such as a fleeting, accidental upskirt or a rare naughty remark once or twice a day, radiate an allure infinitely more intoxicating than the constant, overt displays of brazen sluts. >today's workoutBench press 3x6Deadlifts 3x6Pullovers 3x15Scott press 3x10Curls 3x10Hanging knee raises 3xAMRAP>today's thoughtsI am extremely fond of a particular fictional character. You might call her my waifu. I think of her as an archetypal female ideal, an image which some earthly writer happened to stumble on but which reflects a higher ideal, and whose reflection I seek in the mundane real world. This is probably incredibly autistic, but I think if you met her, you would agree.Only 4 other people at the gym when I came in: a dude squatting 485lbs for reps, no belt or knee wraps; guy benching 265 with a pissed expression on his face; older guy squatting 315lbs; girl who sat on a bench and did dumbbell shoulder workouts for 45 minutes. Neighbors' lights were off when I got home. First time I've seen that since I moved in.
I thought archaeology was something of a rigorous field of study, but the more I try to learn about prehistory, the more it seems like astrology for things found in the Earth, or like an empty canvas on which archaeologists project whatever societal structure or idea happens to be their single-minded obsession. Every non-literate culture is a peaceful matriarchal utopia until they happen to find an archaeological site like the Talheim or the Herxheim mass graves. Sometimes even after ideology manages to trump evidence.

Historical action is more akin to natural laws such as gravity than a series of deliberate choices. People acted the way they did in the past because what they did was the only sensible way for them to act in a given situation without violating the nigh-universal law of self-interest and self-preservation. Our failure to understand this tells more about our ideological myopia ("why didn't these people centuries ago do and say things that I, a 21st century upper-middle class westerner would approve of?") and different contexts (whether we are asking the right questions at all) than about the past. The course of history is fundamentally defined by the bindings of necessity rather than the freedom of choice.

I have several nieces and nephews that I have always been extremely nice and patient with and it resulted into most of them not respecting me at all. I have other family members that would yell at them, always tell them off, scold them, never play with them, etc. and they seem to not only respect those family members more, but actively like them much better as well. >>25088706>and zooming in on dopamine makes it harder to zoom out on us, the whole body and mind, and ask about the role of willpower on those processesIt's just pseudoscience really. The function of the word "dopamine" in popular science is to do nothing but give fuel to the scientist world view, the whole "We're nothing but chemicals" shit. Dopamine in the context of biology does have some explanatory power but its impact here is eclipsed by the damage this word has perpetrated on society as a whole. >it's in line with the feminine attitude to treat the body as some kind of external, uncontrollable creator of foreign harm, an eternal constraint, an overpowering enemy. Something I've noticed about women online lately is they're just constantly complaining about stupid shit random men say to them. They're obsessively talking about death threats, creeps, weirdos in their DMs. After a certain point they need to grow up, don't they?
Women increasingly exist not as part of society but as a mechanical feature, and a kind of wildcard within the structure to suggest it is time to depart, rebel, overtake, etc. The woman is a new kind of panelwork in the structure of the society, no longer an orphan hero or dying saint, instead she is both already dead and was never alive. She is everywhere, and will simultaneously never be who you think she is. The rights of the majority written down in America were never suited to its inheritors, and so they have created a kind of living trap that retains inheritance by the destruction of woman as species and the creation of woman as permeable structural object.

Another Saturday night, locked in his room, online with a bunch of strangers blotting out their inner voids with repetitive pseudo violence. Angry twelve year olds cursing like drunken sailors over the voicechat, bragging when their luck runs well, screeching when it finally runs out. Bud sipped his Mountain Dew,and respawned, looking for his next target. He found one, hiding between buildings in a darkened alleyway, waiting to ambush some poor scrub that happened her way. Bud smiled, and crouched to make his approach silent and his own ambush that much sweeter. Then he noticed certain things. The avatar was partially facing a wall, and in no position to shoot. And as Bud approached nearer,he heard the character's mic was left on,and saw the odd jerking movements of an abandoned mouse. He heard some sort of argument being broadcast by the forsaken player, and as Bud stole behind her,the voices became clearer. And disturbing.A man was screaming in the background, and closer to the mic,a girl was crying. Deep wracking sobs filled Bud's earphones, and the roar of some drunken fool berating her. Bud paused his character behind hers and eavesdropped on the scene, his gut wrenching from the raw emotion flowing unbidden into his ears. It was some father cursing his daughter for being a burden,an idiot,a worthless slut. And all the girl did was cry. Then, reaching some breaking point, the girl's avatar twitched from its hiding place out into the open as Bud heard the father slam the girl into her computer desk. The girl screamed, there was a crash, and more screaming as the father continued his beating. Bud was crying himself now,and started screaming back, hoping to get their attention. "STOP IT! LEAVE HER ALONE! STOP IT STOP IT STOP-"And then the girl's avatar was sniped. A headshot death animation claimed her ,and her avatar vanished. She did not respawn, and was eventually kicked off the server due to inactivity. Bud shook in his seat, wondering what he could do to find her,to help her,to save her life. But it was all pointless. He logged off,and curled up in a ball on his bed. Who could save her?Who could save him?

Just realized how completely miserable I get whenever it isnt sunny; even though I stay inside all day.
