I see a lot of authors use "even as" when "just as" seems more appropriate. Example:

Based on context, the only specification the author is trying to make is that both characters attacked at the same time. Using "even" makes it sound like the familiar's action is unexpected or improbable. It is not. So what's the deal? I'm ESL, so maybe I'm not seeing a subtlety in the use of the term in these particular contexts?

Context. My dad got sick when I was seven and died when I was thirteen. I later experienced other consecutive tragedies, which made me become a gnostic.

I completed a 650k word fantasy novel series and incorporated my gnostic worldview into the setting. This was planned long before the cliche of demons secretly being the "good guys" took off and became a meme.

My reason for including this is from a source of genuine schizophrenic hatred for Y*ldaboth, unlike others who are just atheists or subversive, but I don't want to play this cliche straight. It's not a major plot element until the last book, but I don't want something so cliched to suddenly appear in my series. Seeing Invincible get shit on for doing this has been really disheartening. (Don't watch it but seeing the talk right now.)

Should I go through my story again and change it all?

I have plans to post the story on Kakuyomu eventually with the translation help of my friend who is studying English. (Context. I am a white girl in Japan.)

Serious question. Why does isekai seem to be the default story structure for webnovels?

The demons are not the good guys.
The demons are dead.
The gods are dead.
The psychopomps remain and are confused by the whole situation, especially about what to do with all these souls that keep flowing into the underworld. They are trying their best.
They've decided to keep ferrying the souls up to the makeshift heavens they have cobbled together.
Occasionally they wake the sleeping wyrm to carve new routes through reality, to help with the logistics of the whole operations.

It only even started to become widespread with Tolkein and LOTR, and everyone after copied him. Why? Because copying the LOTR setting saved a LOT of effort both in coming up with a fantasy world, and explaining the alien cultures. Isekai this, gooner that. Can’t you guys talk about something more concrete, like a villain idea you have or a specific fantasy location you want to write about?
I recently watched The Most Dangerous Game (1932), and the setup is pretty cool: a rich guy traps people on his island and hunts them down for fun. Having a specific psycho to fight against is a lot more interesting than the modern setups, where it’s always some faceless corporation or aliens or whatever. And setting the story on one small island keeps every set piece within walking distance.
So maybe I could have a story where an evil wizard kidnaps people and brings them to his domain, where they’re forced to hunt monsters and level up. Then, when a player reaches a certain level, he hunts them down to steal their loot.
The MC can start out as a regular guy, and then, as he gets better at killing, the villain starts taunting him, saying he’s becoming addicted to the thrill of the hunt, just like him. You know, the typical hero-villain relationship that’s becoming increasingly rare to see.

Genre differences are overly technical, so some degree of pedantry is unavoidable, and in this case the difference is kinda important since actual noir tends to be depressing bullshit in a way that hardboiled isn't. How can an author be expected to write about violence and high stakes, when they've clearly never lived even a taste of it. Most hand to hand combat, gun-fu, knife fights, etc etc. It reads like someone that can write very well took a cartoon or a comic book and turned it into a novel. They especially don't understand the after effects of it all. The wise cracking curb stomping aura farming massively OP MC and his witty one liners is a fucking cartoon. I can tell when the author has at least knowledge of what they write about.

Also, this isn't some sort of new degradation. This is naturally how humans tell stories. You will find more in common between an ancient myth and a modern webnovel's characterizations than between an ancient myth and a heckin ebin reddit chungus totally 100% realistic drama novel.
