Just finished the Thousand Fold Thought (Thank you to the anon who told me it was better than people gave it credit for.

First off - I loved it. Immensely. Easily one of my favorites and I know I'll be rereading these books over the years and they're now a part of my permanent lexicon.

I'm onto the Aspect Emperor trilogy - should I try and discern some things I'm still curious/confused about, or will that lead to spoilers for the next trilogy? I got through the first trilogy entirely unspoiled and would prefer to stay that way for the remaining books.

Things I'm confused about - wtf is Golgotterath (I have heavy suspicions it's basically an alien space ship come from the Outside but I don't think that's been confirmed)

What exactly was The Thousandfold Thought? I'm not ashamed to admit some of the Dûnyain dialogue and philosophical monologues start to go over my head in the specifics, but I generally grasp the idea. This I was confused about - especially what exactly Moënghus' plan was with Kellhus?

Also confused about Moënghus getting rid of his eyes and how it connects with the asps he and the Cisharium use?

Like I said some stuff definitely went over my head and I was so enraptured and wanted to know what happened next I devoured the series fairly quickly and probably should have reread the more complicated chapters but I just realllllly wanted to see what would happen.

If I'm better off just reading along that's great, but if it's wiki time for this stuff without being spoiled for the rest, that's great too.

>what exactly Moënghus' plan was with Kellhus?
Moënghus' plan aka the Thousanfold Thought was basically for what happened in the first trilogy to happen, he made his other son Maithanet the leader of the state religion, then set up his other son Kellhus as the Messiah to take over and lead the 3 Seas against the Consult. The Thousandfold Thought was his plan.

>getting rid of his eyes and how it connects with the asps

The asps see for the Cishaurim who blind themselves in order to access their passion magic, what they call The Water. Moenghus for some reason failed to realize this and blinded himself only to discover he was capable of the most basic spells; being Dûnyain, his passion may as well not exist
>>

No offense. Really. No offense. But its crazy how these are the type of people that always come away from the book enjoying it.
Screencap anon dropped like a 2000 character wall of text pointing out the holes in that convo of poorly established conveniences that can only be explained by rushing, and sequel bait. And this guy is talking about how he loved Thousandfold Thought and couldnt follow the Moënghus conversation which is largely just a recap of everything that happened up till now from his perspective and what he assumes to be Kellhus' perspective. Infact its so blatantly contrived that Moënghus himself as he's saying all this says to Kellhus "But you already know all this". As Bakker goes on to expertly frame this as if he wasn't talking to the less perceptive readers, before he moves on to the actual important reveal of how Kellhus rationalizes killing Moënghus.

No offense again. Really. But for anybody who seriously wishes to take Bakker praise at its face value, you're better off assuming that most of the fans you encounter who enjoy it, are stupid and barely understand it (It's not hard to understand) Lest they can articulate a single reason why their understanding is actually a result of a flaw in Bakker's writing.

FINAL FUCKINGLY SOMEBODY IN THIS STUPID (sorry, its just been so frustrating waiting for a single piece of dialogue that actually engages with the moral or philosophical basis for an idea in this book) STORY CALLS OUT THE CONTRADICTION AND EXPOSES THE UTTER INCOHERENCE OF THE ASSASINATION SYSTEM
And its done by Mycroft from an angle I never looked at because there was no reason to assume they would actually tolerate war to protect their system...because of the absurdity of how that defeats the entire purpose of their system.

Sure they could pull every cowards abandonment of virtues "Well if the thing to fight for is lost, than anything to bring back that thing is justified". But that exposes that the true value was never peace, or stability, else diplomacy, negotiation, and more importantly, considering what all Hives actually want would be on the table. No, what he wants to protect is what the Confederacy wanted to protect. The status quo that props up their entire society, culture and way of life, there is no principle behind that. Its a fundamentally arbitrary attachment to the Blue Teddy Bear instead of the Red Teddy Bear, because Blue is preferred.

The only thing that could save this level of incoherence, is Sniper somehow actually having an answer to this question, a justification and basis that isnt trivial.
>>
>>25177904
They are going to keep engaging with this question throughout book 2-4

....................................
sigh.
oh so the answer is actually as simplistic and arbitrary as i outlined before I even got to the answer.
how fun. another cartoon villain to join the brilliant array of cartoon villains who have exposed themselves for having the most shallow debased reasonings in this book so far: Madame, Perry, and Sniper.

If you actually cared about being moral, wouldnt you realize...that every single side of every war of the past, and every war of the future...clearly thinks their values are worth dying for. Realize how empty and hollow such a justification is? But more importantly, how uninteresting this is from a writing perspective, when trying to tackle any ideology and values through thematic exploration?

I'm trying so hard to wrap my brain around how such obviously and blatantly shallow villains could be used for an interesting exploration of the ideals they represent that doesnt ultimately reduce to: Snipers, Madame, and Perry's (he's honestly the worst one, he doesnt even have a value, or at the very least he seemed to respect spain and support the use of the assasinatiom system, but he doesnt express those values in anyway that could explain why he values them, so theres even less depth than the others, also its not the basis of why he does the things he does) ideologies are tenable based on whether they succeed or lose.

And if my theories are correct, then all 3 of them are meant to lose and what actually matters in the end is Jedd Mason and the Utopians ideals and what are done with them.
>>
>>25177906
>>25177913
Fuckkkk...I hate when series do this, give me very little to hold onto, and ground an interest in, just to do all the actual meaningful work of exploring the point of the writing in the later books. Thats a lot of trust to demand from the reader, when you've given nothing to prove that trust should be given up.

I have literally no reason to think this will get better. But at the same time, something is telling me, that at the very least, I have to get to know Jedd Mason before I quit. So...3rd book might be the last chance unless the end of Book 2 is unbelievably egregious.

The books never explicitly spell out the extent, but Bridger's god powers is forcing certain plot points to happen according to a book he read
Perry, for example, just won't die until he's played his part as the villain (here it's pretty clear something supernatural is going on)

Elsewhere it's more unclear, could be Mycroft being a liar, or increasingly insane, or Bridger tugging at the plot
>>
Reading the black company. I don't know how I feel about the first 200 pages. Definitely there is a potentially kino story here but it is a bit convoluted and I don't really care for croaker's crush at the lady.

Hm. Interesting places that this idea can take the series.
>The books never explicitly spell out the extent, but Bridger's god powers is forcing certain plot points to happen according to a book he read
Thats interesting, and would explain some characters, if theyre interpretations of a childs simplistic mind, but also Bridger is kind of smarter than most children at that age, the reason he does the stupid (not literally, but as far the characters who witness it feel) thing he does at the end of Book 2 is because he cant handle all the possible outcomes hes thought up of abusing his powers, he realizes that he cant just make the world anyway he wants because he understands that he doesnt understand everything that would be necessary for the world to work without negative consequence.

Maybe I'm giving his intelligence too much credit with the whole "Smart people know that they know nothing" thing. Or maybe Bridger understands that the world is complicated, but not that people are, so the villains of the story are simple and one dimensional.

Theres also another problem which is...how is it that Bridger is influencing the world in a particular direction if some of these things have been building up since before he was born. Also didnt Mycroft literally say that the way the world is devolving into war isnt how it was written in Apollos book, so where did bridger get these ideas from?

If these are all questions that would require more spoilers then I understand and you dont need to spoil, but if they are questions that can be answered speculatively then...
>>
>>25177974
>theyre interpretations of a childs simplistic mind
Mycroft will go on to speculate exactly this

>>
>>25177995
Can't wait to get to this one, especially because of how poor an opinion people seem to have of the first book.
Will I survive? Part of the reason I post pages and give analysis' is so that somebody who comes along like me, and reads somebodys opinion on a piece of text I'm reading, never get this impression:
>my first scifi book and its been a complete waste of time.
>The characters are piss poor and how the fuck can you write 700 pages and the plot is non existent.
And cast the book aside or indulge based on largely superficial judgements (whether correct or not)

I try to give ample information, and context, to substantiate my critique or praise, so that if one does not find the things I find to be problems, and find the ideas alone to be interest enough they can read themselves. But if somebody finds the problems too large. Then at the very least they can enjoy a dissection of what makes a book interesting enough to write so many scathing words about.

I figure I've largely failed to be fair. But I'm not sure how much of that is me, and how much of that is just an intuitive rejection of the STYLE of writing in the pages I've posted which I've tried to defend and give context to.

Plus, since someone has to translate them, companies won't translate every book ever, so the selection is small enough that I can simply browse the entire LN section at a Barnes and Noble and like an hour.

But Western titles are almost all very short, and there's thousands of books in a single section. So if I want to see what kind of book I'm holding, I have to take it off the shelf, find the synopsis and read it, then put it back if I'm not interested. And since there's one less company looking at money, I imagine the barrier to entry is just a little bit lower, which makes me expect more shit. It's very overwhelming.

I ask because I've visited all the B&N in my area and gone through each of their LN shelves, and I've seen all they have to offer. And since I'm actively keeping up with LN releases, I don't need to browse it like I was anymore. But I can't do that with all their standard books because there's too many.

>So how do you guys decide what to read?
For genre fic you should lurk places like this and Goodreads and start building a list of titles and what I'll call subgenres.

For example, you may hear about a book that's a good colony ship novel, or a good space opera, or a good swords & sworcery. Add it to your list. Add other little tags if they're relevant to you - standalone or series, many pages or few, an author you already know you like, etc.

Over time you'll build a nice little chart to pull titles from. The key now is to let your gut guide you. Did you see some cool Arthurian article or post somewhere, and now you're in the mood for that? Grab it from your list. See a title on your list here and anon is gushing about it? Nice, that probably means it's truly good, so read it.

The other approach is longer but perhaps more accurate, which is to pirate anything that seems remotely interesting and drop it if it's not what you want. If it IS what you want then either keep reading or grab a real copy in a store.

I wish I would have followed this advice, although im curious how this series "gets good" because so far the protaganist is incompetent (he'd be lucky to fool a fruit fly) and I heard he becomes a powerful figure later on.

He is knowledgable and is trained but fails at every step and of course im hoping he abandons his moralfaggotry.

>>25178013
The book has been such a snooze fest that its not interesting enough to analyze.
>>
>>25177995
Book 2 and beyond are far more of a space opera than the first and as rote as it is to say Ruocchio gets much better as an author each book since Empire was his first actual novel iirc. Howling Dark is also when you start getting into the conflict with the Cielcin and things begin to work towards Hadrian becoming the man who destroys a sun just to be rid of their species. In the grand scheme of things Empire is very much a prologue to the series as a whole and honestly for most of it barely even feels like a scifi novel and more of a fantasy one (which having read Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe within the last year I completely get why it comes off that way)
>>
>>25178047
I see, thanks Anon. It’s interesting how Hadrian changes his stance on the Cielcin, since so far he’d probably eat his own faeces just to speak to one. I’m glad there’s at least some personality change coming.

After taking my cat for a walk outside and collecting my thoughts, I enjoyed the smaller focused cast and setting of Magic the Gathering: Guildpact.

This second book focused upon the Orzhov, Gruul, and Izzet guilds as protagonists, in a remote colony. The antagonist was an egocentric magelord who had found and was attempting to gain control over three dragon eggs, which he was hatching.
The first dragon was killed by dropping what I assume was a large industrial size hanging metal platform on top of its head. The other two were tricked into crashing against a cliffside, after engaging within a melee battle. There was an amusing segment where the magelord had control over one male dragon, commanded it to attack the other dragon, and the dragon acted dismayed at being asked to attack its own kind, promising death once he was no longer controlled. The Orzhov protag (think of a female lawyer) had control over the other, a female dragon, who was very territorial and happily attacked the other dragon at Orzhov girl's request, starting the melee bout.
Our good friend Argus Kos, the retired wojek (policeman), passed away at the end, after his heart gave out on him. We saw the return of his angel work colleague, who left at the end of book one to find the missing angels. And some brief faces of other book one protagonists who come back in book 3.
No presence of the sp00ky lurkers (worm-shapeshifters) except in a brief ending cameo. Saving that for book 3 which suggests that our buddy Kos will come back. Ghosts are canonical entities as well as other forms of undead.

Some of you may have enjoyed the quirky 'augmented' female goblin character a little too much.
>>
>>25178058
When I first read these the second was far more enjoyable and by book 3 I felt Ruocchio really hits his stride with every book after being excellent reads so I'd definitely say stick with it a bit longer.

One thing to keep in mind is that this series spans hundreds of years and theres almost always a time gap between each book so you'll follow him through quite alot and get to see the naive retard get beaten out of him and personally he becomes one of my favorite main characters from a new series in the last several years.

Introspect about my interests, look around at what people are reading, and what theyre saying about theyre reading, or just directly ask them about what theyre reading, and see if it matches my interest.

Theres no easy way. You just have to put yourself in the spaces to hear people talk about the books you want to get into, and then do your own inquiry on whether one special book seems interesting or not, and if its part of a series then continue, and maybe develop a stronger sense of your interests.

Usually a mix of word of mouth from here or other (like youtube or reddit etc) and ill add em to my goodreads TBR, I also like audiobooks so ill look for stuff with quality narration in genres I enjoy and try and narrow things down to my specific tastes. Once you've read enough genre fiction you start learning about the books that served as influences to series you've enjoyed (for example A Song of ice and fire by GRRM and Tad Williams Memory Sorrow and Thorn series) and use that to find new (old) authors to read.
>>
>>25178045
I wouldn't know, I haven't read the books but I know people love basically everything after the first one.

The author also went from a raging atheist to tradcath between books 1 and 2 (I listened to this interview with Dcn. Nicholas Kotar) so I think that also changes the tone

Any books where many characters are mages or wizards and magic is being actively used in warfare and combat?
I have Malazan itch and so far nothing can really scratch it.
It is weird how few are the series with proper magic battles and cool mage characters. It's all medieval shit inspired by GoT or some quirky magic academy borderline YA shit. Terrible.

I've just realized that there's an American nursery rhyme called 'Pop Goes the Weasel'.
The main girl from 'Hardwired' has a cyberware called 'the Weasel' that pops out of her mouth and slaughters her target.
That's the reference to 'Pop Goes the Weasel' playing in music boxes where jack in the box pops out.
Furthermore, the theme song to 'I am Weasel' (performed by April March) follows the tune of said nursery rhyme.
Amazing how one could miss two obvious references by being ignorant of a babies' song.

>>
>>25178834
It's more like Lovecraft, but set in the good old days when magic users ruled the world. Stories usually follow heroes who are losing their minds, but in a fantasy setting. However one major difference is that cosmic horror aren't some alien monsters, but people going mad with power, imagination or nostalgia.

Dany’s chapters from book 1 to book 3 aren’t bad, imo, especially since there’s only a handful of them scattered throughout. It’s only in ADWD that she suddenly gets a gazillion chapters of political minutiae that literally no one cares about.

i think all the dany chapters are building up to ... something ... very interesting? we will never find out though, since there will be no next book

Really liking the Wizard of Earthsea. It has a folkloric quality.

It also has something of that classical fantasy feel, before perspectivism, etc. removed all the didactic elements.

Speaking of, I finally read some of Bakker's AMAs and blog and I have come to the conclusion that his work is good totally in spite of his philosophy, which is extremely blinkered analytic framing (which is ironically extremely shaped by Christian theology, despite this rarely being acknowledged). It's at least better than Watts (the other Canadian), although I still thought Blindsight was enjoyable. Echopraxia not so much; sort of a mess.

Of course, that would have been me not so long ago. But I began to read Proclus, Al Farabi, Saint Maximus the Confessor, and Yang Wangmin to get ideas for magic systems and realized they all largely agree with each other and are all utterly correct.
