As most of you guys have probably heard by now, tWoW will contain a SANSA chapter that is categorized by GRRM himself as "VERY controversial".
( this info has been out since WAY back... like 2012-13-14-15 or so... )

Now... initially most people, MYSELF INCLUDED, thought INSTANTLY of either:
A) Sansa gets RAPED ...
OR
B) Pedo Baelish (Littlefinger) tries to make advances on her OR *SHE* tries to seduce him
(maybe as some part of a ploy to distract him and run away etc.) .

Now, all these MAY well be, but it recently hit me that NONE of these options actually hold a candle to the stuff that Sansa has ALREADY been through, both physically AND mentally. EXAMPLES:

1) her innocent direwolf beheaded
2) she inadvertently led to her father's capture and execution (and, by extension, the Rise of the Lannisters )
3) Constant psycho-physical abuse by Joffrey, Cersei and their guards
4) *ALMOST* got gang-raped by filthy peasants
5) married off to TYRION and ALMOST did the deed with him
6) entire family (presumed) dead
7) witnessed Joffrey's excruciating death from up-close, and then GOT BLAMED as an accomplice in it
8) almost getting raped AGAIN by Marillion the bard @ the Vale
9) now lives in constant fear, surrounded by people not close to her, under a presumed identity as a "bastard daughter" to a man she has EVERY reason to HATE THE GUTS OF, and then some...
10) ...all the while having to reject constant pedo-advances by said man and his cronies...
11) ... AND ... is getting groomed to marry an asshole jock kid, who can easily turn out to be EVEN WORSE than Joffrey.
etc. there's MORE I'm missing, to be sure.

With ALL THAT said, it really seems to me like there are yet THINNER ROPES to tread with regards to what a 13-y/o girl can be pushed to.
THINNER than the options A and B initially supposed.

1) Tyrion's line in Game of Thrones that "Sansa's not a killer... at least NOT *YET* ..."
Yes, it's in the SHOW, but it might be a subtle hint by the authors, who were told by GRRM some stuff.

2) Sansa's development throughout aSoIaF has gradually seen her "progress" more and more within the "Game of Thrones", BOTH through her own "wits", as a means of survival within the brutal political landscape and surroundings, especially in her KL chapters, *AND* through LittleFinger's guidance later on.
In a sense, you could say she was almost "PLANNED" that way, ever since the events of book 1 were set into motion by Varys and LF. The latter has always had her eyes on Sansa, even BEFORE the Civil War.
THUS, precisely THIS moment of Sansa becoming a MURDERESS, may be the necessary "step" for her to "progress" from "pawn" to "player" in the G-oh-T.
Kinda like a "no turning back point" for her development that NEEDS to happen.

I think the controversy is simply that Sansa will fall in love with Littlefinger. This is controversial in George's eyes because it could be construed as normalizing Baelish's grooming of her. Most fans want Sansa to become an empowered girlboss who'll betray and kill Littlefinger like she did in the show, but I don't think that's George's intention.
In his original draft, Sansa was meant to get seduced by Joffrey and betray House Stark. I think George kept this overall outline for her character while substituting Joffrey for Baelish. Her direwolf dying at the beginning of the series is symbolic of her future betrayal of the Starks. George has also said he planned to kill Sansa off at the end of the series which suggests she could take on a more morally ambiguous role by then

I'm convinced that tWoW is coming VERY soon, and for the WEIRDEST reasons, to be half-assedly explained below :
( as an added BONUS -- it's entirely possibly that A Dream of Spring is ALSO very close by behind... :P )

TL;DR first:
Been with the aSoIaF fandom since 2006. Throughout the years I've followed and informed myself of SEMI-closely with Martin's creative progress.
I've had this notion since like 2018-19 that tWoW was either already complete, or VERY close to it. ( think -- finishing touches and panstaking proof-read and editing to ensure continuity and lack of plot holes )

Now, MORE RECENTLY, I've had this NEW "feeling" (to be explained in the full text below), since like last December, (2025) even WITHOUT having ANY knowledge or even the slightest HINT of these new "leaks" (which have been apparently around since January), that either THIS or NEXT year (i.e. 26 or 27) is gonna be THE year of tWoW release.
( trust me on that "no info / rumors at all !" bit ;; -- in fact, I was away from ANY aSoIaF / GoT-related stuff since like 2022 until like 2 months ago, due to preoccupation with other life stuff. )

That "FEELING" was spurred by events which have NOTHING to do with Martin, or even the world of literature as a whole.
And now with the "leaks", REGARDLESS of their authenticity (most likely FAKE, but STILL ... ), I've become CERTAIN that it's gonna be a 2026 release...

Well, that is ... ...UNLESS ... ( you gotta read the "long expo" to find out lol )

So I've had this theory since like 2018 that tWoW was probably already finished by then -- OR at least VERY close to it... BUT ..
... BUT Martin was gonna WAIT to "sync" its release with something else that he had planned: Maybe a spinoff TV series. Maybe another book in the TWOIAF universe.
Maybe EVEN wait until he had completed a sufficient portion of Dream of Spring, so he can release sample chapters from it along with tWoW.
Maybe even tWoW + aDoS combined ?!

If you think about it, this idea doesn't sound TOO far-fetched: After all, a Dance with Dragons was synced up with the summer of Game of Thrones' first season.
(ok, it came a few weeks AFTER, but still... you get the idea...)

In any event, all those plans were interrupted by COVID, and then the outbreak of Global Conflict.
( let's just hope that after the Horsemen of Pestilence and War, we don't get Famine and Death next ! HA !!!! ... now THAT would be a perfect "sync" for a "timely" WINDS OF WINTER release! Then after it, we'll only be left with a "DREAM" of Spring lol )

On the PLUS side, George being a comfy pensioneer with a large-enough cult following to always buttress him as needs be, would mean these events would put him into "faster writing" mode.

On the MINUS side, the fucked-up logistics due to the war and shit would have deprived him of the reliable FOOD SUPPLY to keep on going. PLUS these harsh times bring out a lot of freaks out of the dark. Maybe some crazed feminists aren't too fond of Martin's precise depictions of how awful women in positions of power are -- SO they went to his house to heckle and harass him or something...
ALSO there's the issue of how the book is gonna get disseminated after printing, due to tensed-up world travel and transport at this time.

ANYWAY, I think the "positives" outweigh the negatives in this case, as Martin's creative spirit when writing THE DARKEST book in the series so far should only get MORE inspired and energized with and by current catastrophic goings-on worldwide.
Not to mention he'll also get more FOCUS, due to the drabness of the war-economy depriving him of the distractions that typically take away from his writing time, AND his annoying "side-projects".

As I've followed the war in the ukraine closely since the beginning, LATE LAST YEAR I was able to make the judgment that THIS YEAR (i.e. 2026) is gonna be THE YEAR where the conflict will either STOP ...
... OR it will fizzle down to pre-2022 semi-localized semi-militia warfare.
So, basically, the GLOBAL "aspect" of the Conflict will END.

THUS, international world affairs would (semi- ... -ish .. ?) normalize to pre-COVID levels with more free World travel, communication etc.
HENCE, Fatman would FINALLY have the time window to actually finally release tWoW, AND to sync it up with side-project / travel around for book-signings / presentations / meetups, etc.

Like already said: This judgment was made with me being ENTIRELY IGNORANT of the supposed "leak" (apparently first disclosed in January, then re-visited by ANOTHER SOURCE in April).
So, NOW that I AM AWARE of this leak, I understandably move my INITIAL assessment of tWoW release from 2026-7 to 2026.

AND, as an added bonus: A Dream of Spring might ALSO be close-behind !

IN HINDSIGHT,
Recent Global & International developments might potentially explain WHY there was a holdup in the final seasons of GoT as well.
After all, Game of Thrones was an international production, which relied on much travel and international contacts.
THEREFORE, when they made a ONE-YEAR PAUSE in the production AND shortened & botched that FINAL season, it could have been OUT OF NECESSITY TO HURRY IT UP.
The showrunners, assumingly being "in the know" on shit, KNEW IN ADVANCE about covid & wars, so they wrapped it up quick.

ALL THIS (regarding the 1-year pause in GoT and their final season decisions), however, I am significantly LESS CERTAIN OF, compared to the previous musings on tWoW.

As explained in my previous post, I believe the "global aspect" of the war in the ukraine will end THIS year.
And I DO believe that, very strongly.

as for ppl hating on the Dornish chapters, yes, they seem like filler, but I think GRRM is going somewhere interesting that requires buildup. Another anon pointed out that Areo Hotah is mentioned in the index of the first book. I could see warfare going down there at least. The bits about the Water Gardens seem to foreshadow a massacre there, in which the water will run red.
In any case, the only Dornish POV that should've been deleted is Quentyn.

It's going to be something sexual as Sansa is currently 13 years old. I think even Dany managed to turn 14 before she had sex but don't quote me on that. One of the biggest criticisms George has received through the years is about the young ages of his characters. And currently the world is super sensitive about age of consent, and underage sexual content, and sexual abuse of minors. If Sansa repeatedly stabbed Petyr, carved his heart out, ate a piece of it, bathed in his blood and used blood magic to turn herself into a wolf with bat wings to fly out of The Eyrie people would be cheering. But not for anything sex related. And George has directly commented on this dynamic among fans.

Idk but the discussions have clearly affected him. Along with him commenting on how insane it is for readers to be more offended by the sex scenes than the violence, he's also said something a long the lines of not wanting to write certain things he would have had no issues with years ago. But he's also been adamant about sticking to his plans and finishing the story how he's always planned to finish it. I think the remaining sex scenes will be brief and possibly more "fade to black" than what he'd usually write. We won't know until it's released.

People keep wondering if he can finish in two books and I've never doubted him.
Man knows how to move a story along and he somehow does it seamlessly and without the story feeling rushed even though each POV is only a few chapters long, sometimes even one or two.

That's not true at all.
All of the sample chapters are overflow from Dance. He had to cut 500 pages from that book because it was at the manucript page limit. This is part of why we know that Winds was "1/3 complete" when ADWD was published. The four major battles were cut from the end of Dance and put at the beginning of Winds, but he did in fact write them all.

I have an inkling that Horah Loux from Elden ring is an azor ahai Easter egg from George. Starting with the name, azor ahai (a-HIGH), Horah Loux (LOW). Horah was a “chieftain of the badlands”, a barbarian leader who led a long march west conquering all in his path (Huzor amai) who achieved apotheosis (became godfrey the first Elden lord) through pure feats of strength and becoming consort of a god woman, their children becoming demigods. He warred with the “storm lord” (native gods of Westeros, enemies to ancestors of durrandons and ironborn) His lion companion serosh soothes his bloodlust, and so he kills it when he needed the extra power (azor ahai drove his sword through the heart of a lion to temper his sword). The axe became a symbol of his lordship (huzor/hugor, was first king of the andals, of whom the axe is seen as a sacred symbol). Headcanon theory of mine is it’s something to do with the pact, and hard home was destroyed because the wildlings were getting too advanced and urbanizing, creating a real city north of the wall, territory that belongs to the others and the old gods. Old legends of westeros mention the storm god, who hated men’s works and destroyed all their creations through storms, monsoons, meteors etc. on the isle of the greenmen it is said the greenmen can summon great winds to prevent travelers from landing on the isle. So the children of the Forrest can control natural disasters to some degree, so the others using that same power likely destroyed hardhome for the simple reason that men must never advance past the Bronze Age

I was thinking about the whole Azor Ahai/Nissa Nissa discourse and the most likely outcomes. The fact that George keeps bringing up this story suggests that whoever becomes the new Azor Ahai will almost certainly need a Nissa Nissa. the two most obvious candidates are Jon and Dany, since:

I think Martin is deliberately leaving it ambiguous because he big question isn't necessarily who will be AA, but rather who will be the new Nissa Nissa

He actually prefers science fiction, and there's a good amount of evidence that the religions, history, and mythology of Westeros is more sci-fi than fantasy.
