>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

RI is very clear about this, dual cultivation only works with a male and a female mortal gu master, and it's most effective if the other gu master is one of the ten extreme physiques. It just so happens that the only ten extreme physique gu masters (technically one of them ying wu xie is an "eleventh" extreme physique, artificially created by spectral soul demon venerable) with appropriation cultivation level for fang yuan to dual cultivate with are men, so he has to turn them into women first.

Seriously? The politicization of covid, a controversy from 4-6 years ago, the millennial writing, and the negativity in the main character's portrayal. He's weak and gets shat on and has no redeeming qualities other than, I guess, the right poltics (as in he respects 'the science' and he's a downtrodden poor, which supposedly gives him instant moral superiority).

It's objectively bad. Selkie clearly wrote this four years ago and did no updating between then and posting it earlier this year or late last year I can't be assed to check.

The opening to BTDEM is much stronger. In fact it's not even a fair comparison, the opening to BTDEM is just really really strong.

A more apt comparison would be Azarinth Healer's opening, compared to that excerpt from Song of the Gift-Giver. The MC of AH also starts in a similar way, with the drudgery of every day life, but Rhaegar lampshades it by pointing out that yes, it's the dull every day opening but there's going to be mysterious fantasy stuff soon, so just wait. And in fact that does come, and we get a sense of proactivity from Ilea when she uses the skill she has (punching things) to try and deal with her fantasy situation before she gets her initial class.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/16946/azarinth-healer/chapter/198097/chapter-1-boring-introduction-where-is-the-magic

There's even literally a scene in that chapter of Ilea working a fast food job, with similar annoying customer. It's written MUCH better. See screenshot.

I’m sick of isekais.
Most isekai stories don’t even take advantage of the fact that the MC has been reincarnated. The MC just slips right into the role no problem. Then after a few chapters, he sees himself AS the character, thinking, acting, and taking offense to things other people say and do to him as if he was the original character. So what’s the point?
If the point is to provide a relatable wishfulfilment avatar for the reader, then there’s a hundred different ways to handle it other than isekai:
Following the MC from birth
Amnesia
Crash lands/shipwrecks on alien soil
Wandering into a new town
Normal kid stumbles into a magical society
Normal dude stumbles into a magical society
Waking up from a coma
Waking up as an undead
Sick of being a loser and decides to turn his life around
Being forced by his parents to turn his life around
Getting kicked out of home
Running away from home
Leaving for college/magical school
First day on the job
First day after the divorce
Moving to a new neighborhood
Getting cursed by a witch
Being enslaved
Getting arrested
Escaping from prison
Etc.
>>
>>25264382
portal fantasy >>> isekai
isekai has been played out for years
>Most isekai stories don’t even take advantage of the fact that the MC has been reincarnated
most of the people writing portal fantasy are doing it because it's the path of least resistance as an author. either from a writing perspective, in which they have a narrative device to be an excuse for writing the protag with their own voice, or from the perspective of a market whore trying to trend chase
>lists inciting incidents
the reincarnation/transmigration is usually not the actual inciting incident. it's really just a framing device
>>
>>25263754
Sevens needed more interaction with the female leads. The harem part was pointless because he interacted so little with them.
>>
>>25263525
And this is why feMC novels suck. Guy tells you that he doesn't like the story and why and you immediately go "nuh-uh, you must like this passive character"
>>
>>25264382
>Following the MC from birth
The formative years are boring. Either he's a genius kid and does things at a fast too young age (which is awkward) or he has to have a huge shift in character on why he goes on an adventure rather than stay in the life he was in before. (Why not just start the story at the shift?)
>Amnesia
Boring
>Crash lands/shipwrecks on alien soil
This is Isekai
>Wandering into a new town
He can always just wander out. He's still the same person in the same circumstances before he wandered into the town.
>Normal kid stumbles into a magical society
>Normal dude stumbles into a magical society
Urban fantasy = boring. If it's not urban fantasy then your MC is an illiterate peasant.
>Waking up from a coma
Urban fantasy = boring. If it's not urban fantasy then it's functionally the same as Isekai.
>Waking up as an undead
That's retarded
>Sick of being a loser and decides to turn his life around
Sure
>Being forced by his parents to turn his life around
Boring relationshit drama
>Getting kicked out of home
>Running away from home
Sure, as long as it's not a modern setting.
>Leaving for college/magical school
Hard to make relevant. Either he's already been a student for a while or he's learning the basics of magic, therefore nothing too exciting can really happen because MC is just a beginner mage. That's why Harry Potter had that whole chosen one thing going on. You can't just have magic academy.
>First day on the job
Sounds great, but not fantasy, and will be a short story.
>First day after the divorce
Back to facebook with you
>Moving to a new neighborhood
I'm not sure what you expect to come from a story like this. Drama about the upstairs neighbors being too loud? Kids from the neighboring house playing music too loud? Sounds boring as fuck.
>Getting cursed by a witch
Sure, but it can easily make MC too passive
>Being enslaved
This makes the MC passive. Passive = boring. I've read a number of these and at this point I drop the story when I see this. They have all been boring with a passive MC.
>Getting arrested
>Escaping from prison
Yet again boring urban setting.
>Etc.
Etc what? You had like 4 workable ideas in that entire list.
>>
for word count in a litrpg, should my target word count be inclusive of the system garbage in among it? e.g the pop ups and repetitions of "+EXP" and so on

Ignore the system stuff in word count or increase your word count expectations by how much you typically spend on system prompts.
Try to write the system prompt stuff in a way that's friendly to the story being read as an audio book. If listeners don't want to listen to pointless details all the time, then neither do the readers.(Although it might be a good idea to post the MC's stat sheet at the end of a chapter once in a while.)

>Try to write the system prompt stuff in a way that's friendly to the story being read as an audio book.
this shit is NOT friendly for an audiobook, i'm basically writing out the UI as it would appear to the character, at least for this first chapter
or rather, i have the UI along with the protagonist's actions, so i guess an audiobook would just cut out the supplementary interface text and focus on the stuff the MC is actually interfacing with
the reason why i ask is because this first chapter is very deliberately heavy on system with instant communication and pop-ups and notifications, then every other chapter it will be very sparse, as the MC is doing something analogous to "unplugging" or "going offline"

>"Oh! There she is!" Mari exclaimed, dragging him over and quickly approaching one of the outer patio tables, practically throwing herself forwards and tackling a woman in a full-body hug. Ryoma raised his brows as he followed, hands in his pockets and expectations excised.

>The first thing he noticed were the two enormous jugs. Giant well-rounded gourds of treated clay covered a fine protective lacquer and carried with two long leather straps. They had huge red corks on the top with the word 'Water' written in bold white kanji. You occasionally saw such gourds for carrying water around, smaller of course, and actually made from dried hardshell gourds instead of carved from wood in imitation of said gourds.

>"Nagare! Did you order already?!"
"Mari. I see you are doing well."

>They were usually the budget alternative to metal canteens, the kind he used himself for his daily water needs. The fact that she had special-made gourds of that scale meant that she was probably making something of a fashion statement.

>"Heh- you told me you didn't like ice candy! What gives with suggesting a place like this, huh?"
>"I developed a taste for it."

>Also her tits were massive and it was really difficult to avoid staring at them. It was impolite to stare, of course, but they were each the size of his head at minimum, kept in check with one of those bandage-wrapping bras and loose tan shirt. Frankly unreasonable in scale and shape, something that his pubescent male brain sent constant 'Emergency! Critical targets ahead!' reports blaring through his head about.

You worry about it because if people won't want to listen to these stat sheets being read out loud to them, then they also won't read them in your book. You need to integrate the stats in a way where the user doesn't feel like looking them over is a chore.
>>

>>
>>25265106
Oh, also the writer needs to work on writing/pacing romance. There was 1 smut chapter at around the 2/3rds mark and then all the epilogues were smut. Also he has 3 of the heroines confess to the MC during the story, but he has them agree to a harem ending and a 4th heroine confess OFF PAGE between the ending and the epilogues (ironically after the MC had already decided not to pursue the 4th heroine, although it is specifically mentioned she went after him, and also expanding the harem is allowed as long as he has a personal connection with new recruits).

Finding out the big sister type nun superheroine was a slutty slob with a defeat kink out of character almost made the shitty wait for smut worth it though. MC walks in on her living in a complete sty jilling off to old footage of him and she literally snaps and jumps his bones since the image she was trying to present is ruined anyway.

RTOC chapter 129
While I didn’t like the idea of a love story for a regressor, this arc ended up being unexpectedly good. The actual romance itself didn’t really have much going for it, but then turning into a revenge story right when it was going to get cheesy was pretty good, the fight with Yuan Li was pretty long but the end was cathartic. He also got a new power-up but I think with this he’s pretty much the strongest person in the world at this point? I guess the next arc would be about ascension for it to have tension. Anyway, I did end up liking this WN, so thanks for the anon who recommended me this.
>>
>>25266492
Obviously the next arc is about ascending to the Middle Realm. And dealing with Seo Hweol.
>>
>>25266492
>I didn’t like the idea of a love story
The entire novel is about love story and human relationship. It's like someone read murderhobo edgelord wuxia novel mc like fang yuan and that guy from shadow slave and decided to write his mc as the complete opposite of that trope
>>
>>25266501
Seo Hweol is such a massive piece of shit. Will be nice when he gets dealt with. I really expected the Mad Lord to be a bigger antagonist from how they were presented to us initially.
>>
>>25266505
I also got this impression. It's why I always describe RToC as "A direct refutation of RI".
Because it's accurate, but also because it makes RItards seethe.
>>
>>25266516
>I always describe RToC as "A direct refutation of RI".
I will now read A Regressor's Tale of Cultivation by 엄청난.
>>
>>25266505
>>25266516
MC retaining his humanity and not going on a cynical quest to gain more and more power is pretty great yeah. He’s fairly likable as far as cultivation MCs go aside from the annoying inferiority complex that always seems to come back.
The reason I didn’t really like the idea of a love story initially was that with the whole cycles thing it’s pretty obvious that it’d only really last for a single cycle, but it did end up good in the end, so it’s all fine. There’s some set up for the next love interest with the colleague who liked him too, though idk who it could be from the crew he comes with. Don’t really remember anything of that sort being implied early on when he was interacting more with them, but maybe I missed it. The worldbuilding is also getting interesting now, with some revelations about the nature of it being told to us in this arc.
>>25266521
While I don’t know enough about RI to agree/disagree on this point, I’ve only read 1 volume of it, the writing of RI is just painfully bad. Not saying that RTOC is some masterpiece of writing, but in comparison, it is far more readable.
>>
unfortunately i have to agree with the writing of RI being painfully bad. it gave me a headache and i consider myself a slop connoisseur, searching for elf lesbian sex across various stories. i think someone should rewrite it and make FY a girl, then the BNB sex scenes would go really hard

>>
>>25266527
>MC retaining his humanity and not going on a cynical quest to gain more and more power is pretty great yeah.
Why even cultivate then? Cultivation is a choice, if one does not want to gain more power then there is no point in spending time and energy to cultivate, they can just live a regular life of a "mortal".
>>
>>25266546
I will now read A Regressors Tale of Cultivation, just because it makes you seethe.
>>
>>25266548
Seo's motivation to cultivate is to defend those who matter to him and overturn the current corrupt order of higher cultivators, more or less. And to get rid of his infinite regression, at first.

>>
>>25266583
The other enders he came to Mt. Sumeru with and also other characters he cares about native to the world. There is some romance but not that much.

The whole thing around the Dao is around "ideology" and "pushing through your own interpretation". The story can be somewhat summed up as Seo forcing through his ideals against the reigning immortals because their callous beliefs are distasteful to him.
>>
>>25266594
note that this is not entirely accurate and only partially true because I don't want to spoil the big stuff
but basically Seo responds oppositely to regression that most, deciding to never forget any loop and that every time he loops it's like everyone he knows dying because the people in the next regression are no longer the same
>>
>>25266595
One thing I like is that the loops (until as of now) are fairly long.

Also there's a manhwa covering some of the very early chapters. If you read it first, read the novel as well, as the manhwa skips a bunch of stuff. It's a pretty good adaptation though.

Does RoyalRoad allow foot fetish content as long as there is some literary merit and narrative to it?
I know I could use wattpad or something even gayer than wattpad but RR has readers
>>
>Reverend Insanity is a dark xianxia web novel about Fang Yuan, a ruthless cultivator who, at the end of a doomed battle, uses the Spring Autumn Cicada to send his soul back 500 years into his younger body on Qing Mao Mountain. He keeps all his memories and experience, then starts rebuilding his power with one cold, simple objective: eternal life.

The world is built around Gu—sentient parasitic insects that each grant a single ability. Cultivators must find, refine, feed, and combine these Gu, so power comes from strategy, resources, and cruelty as much as raw strength. The setting is split among five major regions, and conflict is baked into the whole system because resources are limited.

That is the core of the thing: not a heroic chosen-one tale, but a villain-protagonist grind through a hostile cultivation world. Fang Yuan schemes, betrays, and massacres when useful, which is a big reason the novel got its cult following.

What would you do for a foot related webnovel?
>>
>>25266820
not stinky beast folk feet
>>
>>25266754
Pretty much, yeah. The world is a massive grimdark shithole where only the most ruthless and competent survive. The higher in rank you go the more apparent it is, which makes the story exponentially more tense and engaging. The classic incompetent cocky young masters plaguing xianxia are almost nonexistent, because they simply get devoured.
>eternal life
His goal is a fair bit more complex than "eternal life". He does not prioritize his life over everything else.
What he wants and is 100% committed to is the unapologetic PURSUIT of the greatest possible objective, which for him is eternal life, through any means necessary. He is old, jaded, and tired of worldly matters, and the only life he finds worth living is one of struggle where he gave it his all without ever lying to himself.
Basically, he finds the game of war and subterfuge immensely thrilling, down to his core. But he also has no issue throwing away his dignity and behaving like a subhuman, even going as far as never taking revenge for faceslapping or caring about his reputation (he finds it pointless), which I think separates him from the average aurafarmer MC which only exists for fanservice's sake.

Really bad move. It's infinitely easier to just block them, then they can't leave a review at all. I don't think they even realize they've been blocked until they can't comment. I always leave DM's unchecked and nobody ever bothers to cuss me out in DMs. But I know for a fact I've blocked a few bad ratings by preemptively blocking, and failed to block a few bad ratings by being asleep when the negative comment spiral begins.

>>
>>25267025
the point isn't whether or not what you're doing is allowed. again, I ask why
it isn't that you aren't allowed, it's that you aren't welcome. it's an arbitrary thing that the people here don't like you, and because of how you behave, by extension have come to dislike RI by association
why not go to where people want to talk to you and want to listen to you? why choose here over anywhere else?
think of the hundreds of posts you've made shilling to people who have zero interest in listening to you. you could've made friends, built community, hell, you post so fucking often that you probably could've written your own RI fanfic which apparently has its own healthy scene you could join

So there you go. Good first chapter is everything, and it falls off logarithmically from there. 2nd chapter matters a third as much, the 3th chapter a ninth as much, and so on.
It's not enough to have 20k words written at launch, you should really spend that same amount of time AGAIN polishing your first chapter to be as engaging and entertaining as possible.

I didn't say that, I said the same amount of time. If it takes you a month to write the first 20k words, you should spend about a month really polishing your first chapter. If it more reasonably takes you ten days, spend ten days revising. Then go ahead and launch.

Have you ever watched porn?
Do you have a specific kind of... something that you like to see in porn? Maybe an action? Or a detached camera angle that isnt possible to actually see during real sex?

Only the surface matters. Perception shapes reality so all you really need is an outfit. Did you expect the authors to pour their hearts and chop up their soul and transmute it for a webnovel?
>>
>>25267320
The point is, all it takes for someone to watch your porn is a thumbnail that fulfills their interest, a title that fulfills their interest, and the synopsis blurb is the low framerate preview that may or may not have audio.

It worked so great that the story became aimless after the first volume. Undead MC (unless there's some established Twilight-esque vampire society) suffers from the same problem as "I reincarnated as a vending machine." Eventually the comedic novelty loses its luster and now you're stuck with a character that doesn't have the option to have human desires. Ie he's not gonna go retire at a sunny beach where all the women wear skimpy bikinis while he sips from a drink with little umbrellas in it. What does it say about society that we use effectively a borrowed tagging system that started on Japanese image board porn sites that archived media to tag genres of porn (and eventually the tags just became the titles of the videos *stepdaughter forced oral ass to mouth*) and then it became how we tag the tropes that we need to stimulate us in books and you could even say that video games are under Japanese tagging systems for addictive game mechanics
It feels like the media we create is about chasing a high and not about whatever the artist-- nay, we have no artists nor auteurs anymore-- content creators were attempting to convey to the audi ants
>>
>>25267945
>What does it say about society that we use effectively a borrowed tagging system that started on Japanese image board porn sites
Tagging started in book lists publishers would give to book stores to give them some idea of what they'd be ordering.

That's literally why some tags we use today, such as shounen or YA, refer to the commercial target audience of a work.

Whoever told you porn sites invented tagging is a fucking idiot.

Im unsure if it is worth the endeavor to explain it to you but tagging and genre are not the same and tagging exists because of hentai.
You dont get a shooter game, you get a looter shooter because you want to see ejaculations of loot after you use a phallic extension to rattle them.
One does not play an arcade game, one plays an intermittently rewarding slot machine.
One does not order a romance book, pne orders chems as letters as words as sentences they activate dopamine, oxytocin, cortisol, and serotonin based on evolutionary social cues written into the story combined with recognizable tropes that give comfort.

I do urge you to learn the Japanese hentai tagging history so you can see for yourself that genres no longer exist. Even YouTube changed its template to look like tube internet porn sites.

At least insofar as labeling genre as a means to indicate to a potential audience member what a piece of media might be like as opposed to for academic or critical purposes.

All genres can be tags. Debatably all tags can be considered genres too, but I digress.

Also this should be blindingly fucking obvious to anyone who has paid attention to the genre sections of media sites over time and seen new genres be added that used to be in the general tags section.

That is a submissive contrivence when the argument is that we have left behind genres to adopt hyperspecific tags that originated from mental websites.

People will get addicted to a video game simply because they enjoy the dissociative fuckbot mechanics of pressing buttons to get pleasurable vibrations and visual stimulus of a jump and slide combo. Jump slides amd grapple hooks are game selling tags. No one buys a game because its a shooter

Unironically stop. Seriously. This is dangerously democracy and egalitarian-brained.

Not a single person in this thread has read everything they've noted to read later. Not a single person in this thread has read every classic webnovel, let alone every literary classic. That people are using tags now doesn't actually imply anything meaningful. Because the idea that it does itself implies that other people matter, and they don't.

>>
>>25268584
That's far too niche to be a sub-genre. There are series about earth/the universe being a simulation (though as you said most are about it being a game) but as for the Matrix-ripoff "see the hidden code" element I can't think of any.
>>

Infinite Realm kind-of sort-of does this. The 'world/simulation' is ran by "The Three" and IIRC when Infinite Realm takes place, they're actually on the fifth incarnation of it or something. Been a while since I read it. The most major villain is actually a yeti dude from the previous Realm who uses a completely different magic system.

>No one buys a game because its a shooter
Shooter is already more specific than most conventional genres, and video game genres get much more specific than that. Action is a genre that contains shooter is a genre that contains TPS is a genre that contains shmup is a genre that contains bullet hell is a genre...

At what point does it stop being a genre and start being a tag? The answer is fucking never. Genres and tags are not separate concepts.
