Victoria e-book when?
How much should we reveal in the first chapter. We know that exposition is haram, but what about the Mcguffin? Do we have to let the reader know somehow that the Dark Lord Sauron wants the One Ring so he can control all others?
>>25290116Honestly don't worry about. Keep writing and then if you find better places to put it, do.No one wants to read an info dump at the start. But write it as you need it, try to get into the action soon and then you can move shit around as you have more down. If stuff is relevant it'll rear its head in other places other than the start
>>25290116You should reveal everything that fits in the first chapter. Nothing more, nothing less.
>>25290103I'll make it once I'm done coming up with a title that isn't shit. I wonder how I'll do this? I'll probably keep avoiding using the word "Victoria" or maybe even "Victory" in the title. That seems like a very good plan. - KKK Wing
Is that anon who was writing that zombie society story still working on it? I gave some feed back to him and honestly the story stuck with meIt's a cool concept.
>>25290012I wrote it as a script 5 years ago, got repped in Hollywood because of it but it didn't end up selling. I've written 20+ things since then, but just now got into KDP publishing. I'll be dropping the second book 8/1/26 and a third 12/1/26.
>>25290126Victoria is a terrible title. It's already taken.
>>25290146NTA but since you bothered to bring your butthurt into this new thread I decided to read the exchange and you genuinely come off like a narcissistic teenager.Your first post was some attention-whoring "heh I thought this place would fall apart with me ',:)"Who are you trying to impress?
>>25290160my butthurt? the fuck are you talking about, psycho?i'm a writer in a writing thread who wrote some cool shit and shares free copies. fuck off.
>>25290164I'm not going to engage with you trying to drag out any attention on you. Stop talking about yourself constantly. Loser
>>25290168you attacked me, faggot. now you're "not going to engage" okay cool. maybe do that from the beginning next time.
>>25290146What was your method for finding a rep in Hollywood?
>>25290173send out queries with contact info from ImdbPro
>>25290189ok, I guess that's do-ableI should finish this script then, its going pretty well I think
>>25290151No, it's a fine title. Nobody will think it means Queen Victoria if Wing made any of those titles on the list the subtitle instead. E.g.>Victoria: Woman in Black>Victoria: The Whatever of Rus
>>25289962That is most certainly not the first person to tell you your book is not good Boor. t. told you your book is not good before him
>>25290160>you genuinely come off like a narcissistic teenager.Try reading The Dark Triad. You have no idea.
>>25290170>gets told his shit stinks>"Help! Help! I'm being attacked!"lol. don't publish anymore books bussy. this world's gonna eat you out.
>>25290251aren't you the Consumptive Cur guy?that other anon also said he glanced at the first page. he didn't read it lol.
>>25290258The post I was replying to was starting shit for no reason, he wasn't talking about my book at all, but cool headcanon bro.
>>25290265>>25290261We are anonymous you fucking retard
>>25290265He wasn't "starting shit for no reason." He was calling out the low quality of the posts. Posts in response to criticism of The Dark Triad.
>>25290243First of the Rus is a great title. It tells the reader who the story is about and stops being about Queen Victoria of England.
>>25290327Rus isn't made up.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kievan_Rus
I looked up the wrong word so I'll delete my post in shame. You win this round. I'm sleep deprived, excuse me.
>>25290282Victoria: First of the Rus (or Victoria and the First of the Rus in the case that Victoria is not the first of the Rus) is better.
>Victoria is about a medieval slavic whoreI lost all interest
>Victoria is about a medieval slavic whoreI will now read your book
>>25290356>>25290349I don't believe this book is that good. Half you anons are dick riding a book about a slavic medieval whore as if it's the best thing to come out of here.
>>25290368I'm pretty sure it's just one other (probably the writer) and occasionally me
Does saying>slipped on my bootsinstead of >slipped my boots onmake it sound like the character tripped and fell over their boots, even if that makes no sense in context?
>>25290405If you slipped on your boots I would assume you literally stepped on your boots and slipped on them like a clown retard.
So, my book is finally out. You might have seen it mentioned in previous threads or on ads here. I’ve thrown together a PDF just for you guys of the first couple of chapters in case any of you want a free sample. It’s the least I could do since /lit/‘s feedback helped me write the thing. Let me know if it’s shit:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NoqlTSNgFhX5CEDFqsllglQFuNa-3GdD/view
>>25288565>You have to understand the character on a deep level. Their goals, their history, their personality.Yeah but I'm thinking like...... can you actually develop a fictional character who's not directly based off a real person, and have them be deep?Because if I write a character based off my own personality, or my best friend's personality, then they're going to be a great character because I understand myself & my friend on a deep level. But if I invent a fictional character and say oh he has X problem, is it actually possible for me to write him well if I've never known a person with X problem myself? I think the answer is obviously no, but maybe you have some good arguments to the contrary
>>25290118I tried this but then my two chapters are my two leads already on the run without a real explanation besides: "big bad wants to capture then." I wonder if the reader will care.
>>25290282It's not because Rus reminds me of a slang.
>>25290368We've only seen one page, anon. The prose was okay so anons made a meme of it.
>>25290544Cool cover.
Whenever I try to revise I just end up rewriting everything that’s wrong isn’t it should I consider killing myself
>>25290827Yes
>>25290612I posted the first 10 chapters on here before.
>>25291109I missed it. Link?
>>25290951Okay. I wish I could’ve finished this book but I’ll die instead.
>>25290083Obsidian
>>25290608The reader will care based on if the action is exciting and the characters are likeable. Backstory and context does not factor in this early. Focus on action and character for the first chapter or two. You should only sprinkle in world details as it comes up naturally. That way you hook them early and then keep their attention with the slow world reveal.
I can't tell if I'm supposed to use forward or forwards and it's pissing me off
>>25291370>The reader will care based on if the action is exciting and the characters are likeable.Hmm, my characters tend to speak more by their actions than their thoughts and dialogue. AI has complained about this.
Oh damn, I posted in the old threadAct 1 of my screenplay is complete. 26 pages. My target was 25, so I have a bit of cutting to do, but I'll deal with that later. It's coming along pretty good I think. I need to write faster though.
>>25290544nice cover art
>>25290544>>25290618>>25291446Looks like AI to me
>>25291897Funny you posted that pic. That pic was genuinely my inspiration when designing the cover. Also, I figured I’d mention that for anyone who’s looking to get the book on Amazon and clicks the ads I’ve got up, then go for the e-book version for now. Amazon is being a dick with the shipping times for the paperbacks at the moment, but other platforms like Barnes & Noble seem to be able to ship the paperbacks in a reasonable time frame.
>>25290368slava russy
>>25290282>Queen Victoria of England.if it's spelled with a k, there would be no confusion
1700 words today. Only 500 on my draft though.
>>25291446This can be fine if you successfully portray their personality through action and make it interesting. At least in the first couple chapters. Obviously, they will have to speak more at some point.
>>25290568I don't seem to have this problem and I'm not sure how to explain it. At most, each of my characters has at least one trait in common with myself but otherwise they're completely different from both me and anyone I know. Are you the kind of writer who has to plan ahead of time? I'm a discovery writer so I usually just pick one or two traits to start with for a character and add shit as I go and come up with reasons that makes things fit together nicely. I usually end up with something really interesting and deep by the time I'm done with the first draft.
>>25290083Look up MASgravel
Recently looked back on some of my old writing from highschool. It's about as good as you would expect. Poorly written fight scenes, convoluted plotlines, fanservice, one note characters, and truly abysmal prose. Really glad I out grew that phase of treating everything I wrote like an anime, but I'm also a little sad to see all the passion that I can no longer replicate. What a burden it is to try and be respectable
>>25292233>Are you the kind of writer who has to plan ahead of time?Yeah. But it's also having super high standards for character writing, like nothing is ever enough. I want interacting with my characters to feel like interacting with a real person. Like I dunno. With real people you always feel some sense of the infinite with them, whereas fictional characters always feel super rigid and defined, you know?
>>25292233>>25292392Every person in real life seems to contain a mirror of the entire universe within them, whereas fictional characters are just a bucket of traits
>Closed to queries>Closed to queries>Closed to queries>Closed to queries>Open to queries>Send letter>rejected>Closed to queries>Closed to queries>Closed to queriesFuck this shit. I rather just independently publish if I have to wait months on end for an agent to open up a spot only to get rejected.

>>25291954Actually scratch that. It seems like the shipping issue has been resolved now. I just looked.

>>25292723I'm collecting $2.50 a month off Patreon, and while it might not be a lot, the mere idea that someone thinks my stuff is worth paying for is really motivating.Amazon is also the devil. Never make a deal with them.
>too mediocre at english to write in it>too english-brained due to spending life online to write in native languagewhat do
>>25292494You know if you actually get accepted it takes them like 3 years to get your book out.
>>25292787No such thing as too mediocre to write in English. Look at the popular novels today like Dungeon Crawler Carl and Project Hail Mary. Barely above 5th grade English. No one cares about prose more than the wannabe writer.
The people on the discord server I’m on keep telling me my story is “aggressively heteronormative” which means nobody wants to read it but I don’t want to add gay characters so what should I do
>>25292860Every readability metric is bad. My book rates between grades 3 and 11 based on which metric is being used.
>>25292906Leave that discord server
>>25292906Readers aren't people. They all cry about that but check Romantasy? All straight couples. Weird, isn't it?
>>25292929>All straight couples. Weird, isn't it?Dare you to google "BL"
>>25292934Whole different beast. You know when you hear Romantasy you don't think BL.
>>25292934>>25292966What’s BL? Black love? Boy love? Booty language?
>>25292906Add a gay character and have the main character violently kill him. Be very descriptive about the way he dies and how gory it is.Then have it have no relation to the plot whatsoever.
>>25293002That isn't true for the other half of humanity.
>>25290066My house has a two-part teak altar. The upper half is the shrine itself: a society of five Buddhas on their thrones in ascending size and various materials—teak, bronze, silver, jade, gold—an enlightened micro-politburo, almost a worthy rival to the Ephorate. Around them, their satellite republics, numerous numinous trinkets: a framed leaf of the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, supposed Śarīra from supposed saints, pictures of stupas in Mrauk-Oo and Bagan. Despite both of these ancient kingdoms’ rulers being obsessed with financing their way into history by building thicker and taller phalluses than their predecessors, Mrauk-Oo and Bagan do not really belong side by side. Mrauk-Oo represents Arakan, the birthplace of my father's mother, who herself never saw an independent Arakan, nor did her grandparents. Bagan, the first Burmese kingdom, the cradle of all Burmese identity, where the Burmese baby, instead of bells to rattle, was given a saber by Fortune. The Burmese then went on to subjugate different peoples and lands—including Arakan and his peoples. The Burmese kings, in their inventiveness, noticed the gaps between Theravadan scripture, the Three Baskets, and there, between the strands of compassion for all sentient beings and principled pacifism, they found Empire. This fascinating discovery of darkness in such blinding light is taught by the modern Burmese state’s textbooks as victory, and after decades the Burmese people have become mythomoteurs.I grew up spewing and believing in this nonsense, but with my father, Chinese and Arakan, my mother, Shan and Karen, there is not much Burmese in me; even if the nonsense were real, I have no solace. So whenever I hold the pen, or before my hands type to fill the blank spaces for my nationality and mother tongue, a collective metaphysical guilt sets in by virtue of my birthplace: Yangon, aptly meaning the end of strife, ensured to be untouched by war (besides some bombings from the resistance since 2021) as even the junta knows not to hit her most beautiful whore.Though if one of the ethnic minorities won out—Mon, Arakan, Karen—it does not take many flips of the history books to find atrocities committed by them. A few wars going in favour of the ethnic minorities, and I’d be lamenting for the Burmese. This fact does not bring me any joy. I also recognize that independence for all the ethnic lands under the modern Burmese state, Myanmar, would not be prudent because of the existing world order, and the only option for survival for both the Burmese and the ethnic minorities is interdependence; a certain decentralized federal democracy would be ideal. I do not take any joy in that belief either, as I am essentially spewing the words, “Better Together”—stuck on the posters and pamphlets for the vote No campaign in the Scottish referendum and on the mouths of wives with abusive husbands, who have no one else to rely on.Now, other parts of the altar.
>>25293114Now this can get traditionally published
>>25292720Ngl, I don’t know yet because I’m not using KDP. I know for a fact that purchases have been made and libraries are stocking the book so they definitely pre-ordered, but I’m probably not gonna see the royalties for a while. The ads I’ve got here are getting a steady amount of clicks though, so I imagine at least some of those will translate to sales. The Amazon seller rank has only dropped a bit too. I’m still comfortably in the top 150,000 for general fiction and in the top 2000 in specific genres. That said, I’m not going to know the complete picture until my stats come in about a month.
