>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Would anyone be interested in a story about a NEET going into dangerous places full of things that will kill you to stuff his backpack full of valuable loot against the government's wishes and laws?

Not an isekai (per se), not a litRPG, not a harem. Just a guy with rent to pay, apartment full of military weapons and controlled chemicals, and no real direction in life or a reason to live beyond seeing another day.

Reposting because I took the worst moment to ask this.

Well, if you'd be so inclined, https://www.honeyfeed.fm/novels/30962

Mostly looking for early suggestions and probing for premise interest.
I think my story was pretty badly mogged by others. Not sure if it's due to the tenses thing, the narrative style, or if honeysneed is simply the wrong audience for this kind of thing, but I thought /lit/ might at least give some semi-honest feedback.

Or Occam's razor and the story is just mediocre at best. I have a little more, but holding off with publishing more chapters before I lose or win.

M8, telling someone they are describing something they are not literally describing is a way of indicating their description overlaps with something else. Often this is done as a comedic way of pointing out a thing exists when it was not thought to exist.

>>
>>25341745
>Any mysteries, progression, interesting characters, etc?
It is a mystery.

Jokes aside, I intentionally sold the premise short because I don't want to spoil the entire story.
Of course there is "progression" in the sense that the MC develops and "progresses" his equipment and tactics, but his goal is not to senselessly risk death for no reason.
I guess the thematic spoiler would be his goal is to sensefully risk death for a GOOD reason.

>>
>>25341617
I think it's more the fact that you wrote it for the monthly one shot. People aren't as enthusiastic about those as the full novella contests. That, and Honeyfeed is more geared towards the weeb and LN audience.
This is all without actually reading what you wrote tbf, so take it with a grain of salt.
>>
>>25341577
I am all for keeping my loot out of the taxfags' grubby claws but I don't care about modern weaponry and I would much rather have a fantasy harem than the absolute nothing you seem to offer.
>>
>>25341928
>I think it's more the fact that you wrote it for the monthly one shot
I was quite directly comparing my story to others in the contest, though I'm not sure how to actually gauge success against failure. I imagine high views but low chapter reads means people don't care. In that aspect, I guess my story is not doing too bad?

I fully intend to continue it after the contest, though I'm not sure when. I'm very busy with Slop King and I don't want to sacrifice Slop King time for what is essentially a side project started out of stress overload.

That being said, including the contest chapter, which I believe is self-contained and stand-alone as far as the contest is concerned, I have 4(4.5) more chapters so far. I could drop them somewhere as a preview, provided anyone at all here is actually interested.

for what reason do any characters exist

>>25342206
There are a couple of things I do.
>I have an outline and bulletpoints of events I want to hit every chapter that I update as I go for arcs and sub-arcs
>I write stream of consciousness for 3-4 hours a day, not even worrying about typos, bad word choice or prose, purely get the first draft completed as fast as possible while having momentum in your creativity, drive and dynamic world modeling in your head, the trick is to not separate the thinking through and writing into two separate tasks
>I straight up copy my raw braindump text into AI, tell it to fix my spelling and grammar mistakes and to make it match the general style of my previous chapters
>I do 30--60 minutes of proofreading and editing but AI is good enough and my braindump is complete enough that it creates a very good flow indistinguishable from my previous chapters

I can finish high quaity chapters very fast like this. You need to realize that you're a storyteller and writing is merely a barrier to get the reader to experience what you have in your mind, so get what you have in your mind as rapidly to the page as possible, don't overthink things, this isn't literature. They want to experience the autistic anime scene you conjured up in your head, not read the prose of charles dickens.
>>
>>25342216
Do you want me to spoil the entire thing, or something?
>>
>>25342206
I write 2500 words daily at the minimum, I've got a 4.8 rating on RR. My trick is:
>Write draft
>Do 20 squats (Helps blood sugar, resets your brain)
>Reread draft, check for errors or more questionable decisions
>Edit them out
>Do 20 more squats
>Reread
>Repeat until content

You'd think this would get agonizing but by this point I do maybe 80 squats tops for a chapter.
>>
>>25342291
can I substitute the 20 squats for an orgasm?
>>
>>25342299

>>
I take 2100mg of ashwagandha daily so I like to believe it helps me a lot, and recently I changed from 2 to 1 monitor setup to better laser focus on whatever I'm doing. Sometimes I'll crossfade alcohol with weed when I'm writing or editing. Outlining helps a ton, even a simplistic 1bulletpoint=1sentence per chapter for a general grasp of the story flow but even after launch and writing I didn't ultize it much because I had written 3 versions of the story to that point so it was just writing by the heart and pattern. I had prewriten 50k words for the first act of the story over a ~3 month period, before launch, so it was just a matter of editing it for public release with a few new chapter additions here and there after launch. I don't write/edit daily, but there'll be periods when I do. Right now I'm waiting on my 2nd act volume art before I get back into the grind. My chapters are usually 2k words and some 1k here and there with a few big 6-8k word space fleet battles. I also don't chedule chapters and post them as soon as i'm done with the couple editing passes.

>>25342486
TTS is a pretty unique way to experience them.
I mean, my issue with audiobooks is that the narrator has to pick a way to interpret the text, so its meaning actually changes in the delivery. Which is kinda bad, because it diminishes one of the strengths of the medium.
TTS are monotone, so their meaning isn't changed.

Why is the difference of writing quality in ScribbleHub so vastly different from the quality in RoyalRoad? I've noticed that RoyalRoad mogs both WebNovel and Scribblehub.
There aren't any rules to posting on all three yes? So, why the vast difference? Is it because suggestive themes are allowed?

Do you think tossing in a "If this chapter has you hooked already, please favorite and follow" as a post-chapter note on your first chapter would increase or decrease getting those? I can't imagine the average RR reader being much more sophisticated.
>>
>>25341577
nice dubs but i already own a copy of roadside picnic
>>
>>25342529
But do you own Roadside Picnic with cute girls?
>>
>>25342500
I just do it that way because indie webnovels don't have professionally produced audiobooks, and a lot of the fancy AI produced audiobooks are full of errors and glitches because the people who make them never actually double check or edit the outputs. So shit like skipping whole chapters or suddenly interrupting a scene with robotic screeching are all things that happen somewhat regularly with AI audiobooks.
Meanwhile a simple TTS program consistently just works most of the time. I mean it stumbles on things like stat-blocks, "weird formatting", and has a few quarks of it's own, but I am used to such hickups and still able to follow the story.
That said, anime style dialog with tons of stuttering and reaction noises is truly tedious to listen to using TTS.

For example
"b-b-but onichan!"
Gets turned into "be. be. but, [volume increase] ONICHAN!" by the tts.

It's not perfect. It's just good enough to get me through the work day.

>ScribbleHub is mostly kids doing the writing, RoyalRoad is mostly kids doing the reading.
While I do agree with this, but why not both?

>>25342523

>>
>>25342537
>While I do agree with this, but why not both?
Because ScribbleHub came after RoyalRoad as a reaction, effectively. Kids go to the newer sites to try and be ahead and it sets a precedent. There's a few others like this cropping up like Fictionry.
>>
>>25342541
>Because ScribbleHub came after RoyalRoad as a reaction
false statement
>>
>>25342528
I'd do it but not on its own.
Throw in some lore explanation, or a "see you on moday" if you release on weekdays only. That sort of thing.
If you foster engagement some of them will engage back which makes the story look alive even to lurkers that never interact or comment.
And don't do this too often, maybe the first batch of chapters you release and then from now only here and there especially on cliffhangers tell them they can read ahead on Patreon.
But ultimately this and covers and blurbs and everything is really just small stuff compared to writing a story that hooks people.
>>
>>25342503
we probably have like 5 western posters and 5 esl posters then a bunch of occasional posters that drift in and out
>>
>>25342528
I would do it, but it's different on youtube. The typical action after finishing a video is to click on the next one. Even videos that users like will often not get a like or subscribe because the user simply forgets. Your situation is a bit different, because if the user reaches your last published chapter their thought isn't "I need another story to read", instead it's "I want more of this story" and they are much more likely to follow you as a result.

This doesn't apply to reviews though. You should frequently remind readers to lead a review and if you want more follows before readers have caught up then you should remind them of that too.
>>
>>25342537
Webnovel is comparably large, there is just far less money for top tier authors because of predatory contracts and such.

Honestly martial mimicry similar to taskmaster is more interesting, especially for a antagonist in a martial heavy story.
Copying magical power beams is inherently lame especially when the protagonist has it.
WAY better returning villain power because it forces the mc to constantly think up new shit whenever dealing with the copycat. Even as a one and done villain it's good.

If a MC used it even halfway to it's full potential it would just be a lame instant win button and each new threat is just a power pickup.
Never give your protag instant win buttons.
It's the real reason protagonist almost never have powers like mind control or mind reading unless there are heavy restrictions that come with it.
Or why invisibility is never a primary protagonist power.
It is instant killer of all tension since the protagonist would be able to opt out of conflict whenever they wanted.

Sounds like you are describing Silver (or however the fuck his name is spelled in those books).
Uses his previous experience as a master necromancer to literally break the rpg system he found himself under when he returned from being killed.
Like constantly killing shit 100 levels above him, generally acting like a merder hobo psychopath, and irredeemably edgy and evil, yet always no matter what he did felt completely and totally justified.
Internal power scaling was utterly meaningless as far as I could tell.

I genuinely have read something where that was the protagonist's power recently. Took me a bit to find out what it was, but it's "The Sixth Campaign" (https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/152859/the-sixth-campaign).

Maybe twenty chapters in he gets a power that's perfect stealth for a minute or so with a 24-hour cooldown. He proceeds to use this power in the stupidest possible ways and refuses to kill anything. It blows chunks.

>what the fuck is a "NTR"?
A shortening of one of three Japanese words, netorare, netorase, and netorari.

Netorare refers to works and situations where the PoV person or character is cuckolded* or cuckqueans* against their will.

Netori refers to works and situations where the PoV person or character cuckolds or cuckqueans someone against their will.

Netorase referse to works and situations where the PoV person or character is willingly cuckolded or cuckqueaned. This comes in 3 general flavors, swinging, sharing, and cuckoldry/cuckqueanry play.

Importantly netorare and netori are sometimes expanded to include situations where the person or character being NTR'd was not yet in a relationship yet and either realizes their feelings after the fact or had not acted on their feelings yet.

Derived terms include NTL (a Korean term sometimes used for netori to clearly distinguish it from netorare), NTS (a term sometimes used to specify netorase), and MTR (a term for fucking a person or character's mother, generally against their wishes and sometimes with the implication that they have an Oedipus complex). The latter relates to the fact that a lot of NTR and NTR adjacent media also involves people's friends and relatives getting fucked, not just their lovers. Again, often with them realizing their feelings for those people after discovering their relationship.

Related Terms:
Cuckold - a man whose partner engages in adultery
Cuckquean - a woman whose partner engages in adultery
Bull - a man who has sex with someone's partner as part of cuckoldry or cuckqueanry play
Cuckcake - a woman who has sex with someone's partner as part of cuckoldry or cuckqueanry play

See also: swinging, sharing, open relationship, polyamory, polyandry, polygyny, polygamy, polycule, harem, and reverse harem

How many stats is too much in litrpg? Working on a system right now, and it's around 10 stats in the end such as STR INT END etc. And it's really the shortened and cropped version, I hate it when they read all the stats in audiobooks, it gets so boring.
>>
>>25343706
I think lowest I've seen is 4, highest is 12 excluding specialty stats not everyone gets, and the average is generally around 6-8.

This is setting aside the pool stats which are generally directly derived from one or more of the others, as well as shit like experience and level.

For what it's worth, I would first consider what each stat is going to be doing narratively if anything. Like if you aren't going to have any characters specialize in RES, do you even need a RES stat? Can that just be covered by skills/equipment? That sort of thing.

Put another way, main casts generally have different casts specialize in different things. How large do you want your main cast to be and what do you want them to specialize in?
>>
>>25343706
Personally prefer when stats aren't explicit, and if it's based on a game system that system is kept to the background. Sort of like the old D&D novels.

That said stats are tolerable if they actually are relevant and have clear noticeable reasonably predictable effects in the story through showing rather than just telling.
Also when stats go up, for potential audiobook listeners in the future, rather than listing the whole stat block every time a stat changes, just note the stat that changed and save the full stat block for end of chapter or end of arch portions so as not to disrupt the flow of the narrative.

I have zero advice for the exact number of stats, but I lean towards less being more.
>>
>author adds litRPG to the tags
>the "system" shows up like once every couple of chapters
Speaking of systems, maybe I've overthought this. I assumed litRPG would be nothing more than statpadding or statsheet reading, in which you would have to add about 20 attributes and explain each one.
A System could show up here and there without taking up too much of the real story. That would be great because I often overthink a lot of aspects of the plot.
I don't want to create a spreadsheet for a litRPG, but I figured authors might just add System messages here and there.
I'll probably do this instead.

I have tried to divide them by 3 categories for physical/magic/mental with 3 other that are disconnected and cannot be enhanced with a subtotal in the end, that makes it 20 lines, holy shit.
Do I just cut the 3 groups down to 2 per category, or should I just abandon mental altogether and include all its properties into "magic"? I really want to play with numbers tho.
>>
>>25343706
I don't think stats are necessary. You can make do with just levels/abilities/items etc, like in Wandering Inn
>>
>>25343773
It's why labels such as 'crunchy litrpg' (stories which have a large focus on stats) are a thing. Like any genre there is spectrum of different styles.
>>
>>25343777
Okay, if I were going to fix this, uh...

1. Knowledge shouldn't be a character stat. If it's narratively relevant, track it with whatever a character has knowledge of, be it a quest or a monster, separately, so you aren't constantly bringing it up every time you see a character's stats
2. Focus, Perception, and Control could probably be combined into a Fortitude or Willpower stat and stuck up by Vitality each representing physical and mental fitness.
3. I have no fucking idea what Willpower or Acumen are supposed to mean in this context, nor do I see how they relate to Stamina.
4. Health, Mana, and Stamina don't need to be explicit stats if you don't want them to be. They can be represented purely narratively or as hidden stats that characters know exist but don't know explicit values of moment to moment.
>>
>>25343777
as the other anon said a lot of these can just be collapsed into how you render them on the page rather than being enumerated
you don't want each of your characters to be degenerated into being entirely represented by their numbers, like you don't want an information asymmetry to be spelled out as character A having 0 knowledge and character B as having 20 knowledge
i think even the biggest fans of litrpg would think that's retarded
>nooo but it's thematically relevant for every character to be defined entirely by their stat sheet
then your themes are retarded
or at least have your characters buck the outcomes that are assumed based on these stats, and piss off every reader that came for the stats in the first place since they clearly mean nothing
>>
>>25343777
>>25343871
So, my fix would be:
>Level
>Class
>Health (hidden stat, scaled off Level, Vitality, and Fortitude)
>Stamina (hidden stat, scaled off Vitality)
>Mana (hidden stat, scaled off Fortitude)
>Vitality (physical heartiness)
>Fortitude (mental heartiness)
>Strength (physical potential)
>Agility (physical celerity and control)
>Intellect (magical potential)
>Wisdom (magical celerity and control)
>Luck
>Charisma
>Domination

The attitude of an average russian towards chinese or any other culture is that of contempt. Naturally with an attitude like that, both russian readers and writers have no interest in deeper xianxia/daoism themes and concepts. To them xianxia is just a popular thing and a trend to be monetized.
>>
>>25343706
Stats suck because numbers are meaningless, and your average reader that reads 50 litrpgs at the same time has no clue what any of it means when reading your weekly chapter.
Keep it simple. Health, mana, stamina if you have to do numbers. If you do skills, they must have hardcaps (skills can upgrade or merge, but they don't reach higher than, say, level 10). If you do classes, your MC preferably never reaches over 1000 during the whole story; keep them low, milestones at milestone numbers.

>>25344340
The two 'main characters', or first significant characters, are

It does, such weird game, that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be: RPG or strategy.
Like, supposedly the game is about characters, but the battle system is completely removed from that.
Meanwhile, everything in the game revolves around collecting modifiers to improve your stats.

Honestly, CK3 inspired LitRPG might be kinda fun. Imagine the MC getting a certain personality in order to get a stats boost, only to suffer changes to their personality?

I really went along with that corny ass name: DEAD GOD REBORN, fk me. It get's worse, here's the blurb:

If a god is powerful enough, he cannot simply die. All of them have their ways around death.
A terminally ill sports player, Dan, a mere human, does not. But he quickly finds out what happens exactly when a god tries to come back to life. And while it claws at Dan's soul, demanding his body, it drags omniscient powers into Earth's reality, giving everyone new powers. In Dan's case it's barely enough for him to fight back.
It’s the System, and it grants something to everyone who seeks, be it a quick death or a cure. Now it's Dan’s turn to get what he wants and needs: to find a cure and to kill the parasite inside his soul. And while some immortals have been slain, Dan’s fight won’t be easy, because that thing inside his soul is not only a simple god but one of the five Origins, The War Incarnate.

Question is: it is corny and dramatic enough? Is it clickable? Catchy? Basically a monster whackamole in planning while I read through all the guides.

But he also adds that ostensibly roughly 15% actually are ongoing or completed, and the rest are dead in one way or another. That lines up with numbers on similar creative platforms in terms of percentages and such.

This means if you're within the top 11.7k on ranking, you're in the top 10% of RR. If any anons in this thread hit that threshold, they should be very proud.

I'd say that's great. Mine is 5 months and only 2k views. Started running an ad 2 weeks ago too.

Oh, yeah the fucking tags, I'm ESL as someone said here, and it's odd for me to tag inside the work's name itself. Should it be something like... DEAD GOD REBORD [LitRPG, System Apocalypse, Weak to OP MC]?
>>
>>25344805
>tower report is actually real
wtf
>>

>>
>>25344810
yeah if you don't communicate your premise or hook your readerbase in your title or cover art then you can just tack it on with title tags
I'd probably skip litRPG since that's an actual tag and I think it's less that RR readers into litRPG seek it out, and more that they assume it as a defacto then filter out stories that aren't. system apoc sorta implies litRPG too
>>
>>25344777
How much did the ads cost? How many followers have you gotten atp?
>>
>>25344816
Yeah, the System Apocalypse implies it I suppose.

They also do line up if you pay attention to how rankings move. I've been watching mine like a hawk. Followers up to 25 can move you tens of thousands of ranks. Followers up to 35 move you maybe a few hundred.

Ratings, meanwhile, instantly can shoot you up over a thousand ranks per rating. Favorites don't seem to move the dial much at all, or if they do, they're the least weighted.

Overall, getting up to about 35 to get close to the top 10%, but after that you need ratings. Lots of ratings. Followers need to go in chunks of 10-15+ it seems like to make any comparable momentum at that point.

>>25344820
I paid for the second highest tier and have gained 16 followers in 6 days. I also am running a very cheap reddit campaign on reading-focused subreddits which is the highest mover of views. My overall ad budget is about $500-ish. The reddit campaign ends the 19th, I'll be posting an overall inside baseball report then on things like demographic info for other anons.

Immediate morsel I can state: If you pander to Southeast Asians, a Reddit campaign is worth its weight in gold.

MC gets isekai'd into a mosquito and has to figure out how to grow strong.
>>
>>25344830
Oh, to note on my gains for reddit: I am not targeting certain subreddits that likely would have even higher "attach" rates such as LitRPG as I'm not writing one due to how reddit's impressions system works. If you're writing a LitRPG then you should obviously and d definitely target r/LitRPG.

I asked a clanker to pimp it out a bit:

An immortal god doesn't just die. It looks for an open seat.
Dan was supposed to rot in a hospital bed, a broken ex-athlete waiting out a terminal diagnosis. Instead, his failing body became a life raft for something ancient.

When the entity forced its way into his soul, the sheer violence of its arrival tore open Earth's reality. The world awakens to The System—a cosmic framework granting powers based on the deepest desires of mortality. Some ask for wealth; others beg for a cure.

For Dan, the System gives him just enough power to do two things: fight back against the parasite rotting his mind, and hunt down a cure for his failing body. But evicting a tenant is hard when that tenant isn't just any minor deity. It’s one of the five Origins.

The War Incarnate.

Dan wanted a second chance at life. Instead, he’ll have to wage a one-man war against the god of war itself.

Please don't do it ever again to me. I hate gen ai text, mine is bad enough. I am shitting and bleeding and snorting when I see gen ai text.

The writing is too awful.

I don't have anything against ASEAN munkes per se, but I'd honestly rather die than pander to nations with sub 90 average IQ.

My bad anon. But what do you think about the cover

What does "pander to SEA" even mean? Don't they just read chinkslop anyway
>>
>>25345001
Frankly you just gotta reference some shit popular in their countries and you can probably immediately rope them in. None of my numbers are particularly high-engagement beyond follow and faves so it's not like my comments section has turned into a Jollibee or something.

You gotta remember 1% of 1% of 1% of internet users actually do things like comment or interact, and that's proportionate for any viewerbase too.
>>
>>25341570
Recently, I have been reading random stories on "latest updates", and it's really surprising how many stories just discontinued very early; many don't even seem to reach 20,000 words.
I guess I get the feeling with my latest chapter, total of 10 views in 20 days, but still people should do better than me.

Mostly, but if you can catch topics or materials that are especially deep cuts for them, you could probably get somewhere. Random one off the top of my head: Isekai trucking where it happens because the lead decides to sing "My Way."

The fucked up part is I'm not even SEA, I'm just in too many circles full of SEAs that I've learned their culture by osmosis.

I am sorry but it is the same trashgpt. Given the text with the 'rule of three' it may even persuade readers away, giving out impression that text inside is ai too.
>>
Don't really come to /lit/ often but I'm surprised how fast this general is. Would've thought that this general would be far slower like it is on /vst/.
>>
>>25345077
I'm probably contributing to majority of the posts here due to actively lurking.
>>
>>25345077
Web novels is actually pretty wide topic and the general covers both reading and writing. Two other generals /wg/ and /wbg/ are for creators only and /sffg/ is reader focused.
Even slow boards like /vst/ have fairly fast threads like the AoE one

No

no but it would be funny as fuck so do it anyways
>>
>>25345077
I post when I can, just not much to talk about. Took a pause from writing to goof off in cs2, and been reading War and Peace. After I finished binging Sworn to Destruction I just haven't been reading any other webnovels; I do have The Crystalline Initiative on my to read since its completed and I need to find the motivation to start on crow and rabbit since that's ending soon too.
>>
>>25345125
I actually think it's really good lol
idk why other anons are saying no. it's funny while making it clear what your story is
>>
>>25345113
>wbg/ are for creators only
Lol, most in that thread create nothing and get mad if you even bring up actually writing writing a story or doing a project.
>>
>>25345113
world builders are 99% ideaguys who've never completed a project in their life
>>
>>25345125
I like it
>sells your premise
>makes the viewer laugh
you invite hostility with it and might get a hate rating/review but it's based so you should do it

Thoughts on killing off harem members and replacing them with new ones? The interactions have grown stale and I don't really like writing them anymore
>>
>>25345224
>killing them off
do not
>retiring them via giving them shit to do that keeps them off the page
totally fine and normal for harem stories

I decided against it. Harem is supposed to be lighthearted and fun. Love Hina, To Luv Ru, and Yuuna & the Haunted Onsen never had funeral scenes.

Unless you're going to do a comical death, like Weekend at Bernies or Clue or something.
>>
>>25345278
Or one of the girls comes back in someway, like a skeleton or ghost.
>>
>>25345278
you don't need to literally 'kill them off', you can just sideline. same as it ever was

some authors don't even bother with covers...

yeah, copy him

>>25345528
This would be a challenge right here.
>no cover
>no art

>thats it
If you could garner a sizeable audience with these conditions, you'd undoubtedly be on a whole new level compared to others.

read to ch200 on Reverend Insanity, it does a better job of setup and payoff than most webslop but once it became apparent the author was going to kill everyone on the mountain I kind of got bored.
