>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

I believe the first 200 or so chapters were unplanned. I'd recommend reading to chapter 400 first and you'll get a feel for the story and it's good bits by then.

A lot of things get ironed out past 200, but the repetition and translated prose is still bad.

The climaxes are quite good though.
>>
>>25441788
I stopped at 200 because I just found Fang Yuan and his new companion boring. The author at least tries to show Fang Yuan to have some kind of moral complexity even if he's just a psychopath with sophistry, but the other one is just a battle psychopath which I find incredibly tedious.
RI does setup and payoff really well, but it's not for me I reckon.
>>
Am I going crazy? I just checked the RR Writer's Guild and looked through author stories, and all of them seem to me to be at least ai assisted or created. It's like a nesting doll within the reviews (likely ai written) also writing works that have all the same signs and shit fuck voice.

fucking hate this, maybe im just schizo
>>
>>25441849
Reverend Insanity literally gets good after chapter 200. Keep reading, bozo.
>>
>>25441849
I'd really recommend you to get to 400 as the end of that arc has an incredible payoff. Much more so than the end of the Gu Yue arc.

But if you don't like Fang Yuan himself then dropping it would be the answer. But I will say that side characters don't stick around for very long.
>>
>Read 400 chapters and it totally gets better bro!
I thought this was a joke
>>
>>25441867
Thanks for telling me the other character isn't a mainstay, that might make me pick it up again.
I don't dislike fang yuan, I just don't find him interesting. He's like the horseshoe theory of boring protagonists where the supporting characters are all more interesting than the them, except instead of the protagonist being boring because they're not a character Fang Yuan is boring because he's completed. Both are boring because they don't change.
>>
>>25441851
No. People who are passionate about writing are in the minority now, and most of those have patreon anyway. Ai slop farmers are just the final flowering of the author's art.

Sadly Fang Yuan has already lived through 500 years of character development. All that remains is the pursuit of eternity, by any means.

Are there any cultivation stories that are a bit better written? Something that stands out to me is that old side characters fall off. The MC is supposed to be great friends with them, but at some point they just never appear again. Another common oddity is that the MC only cares about "jade beauties". All other characters are villains or in the background. The MC never seems to have to do any actual sect missions either. The only time that it becomes relevant is if they are sent on a mission that's dangerous or they don't want to go to. There's never any "MC have lectures to the qi gathering pupils" missions. As a result of this these worlds never feel fleshed out to me. Are there any works that aren't like this?

>Something that stands out to me is that old side characters fall off. The MC is supposed to be great friends with them, but at some point they just never appear again
That's one of the things that make xianxia great. In western novels very often we get a group of people, mc and people from his childhood and teenage years that fill up the roles of the protagonist, antagonist and the supporting characters, the roles change throughput the story (enemies become friends, and friends turn into enemies). It's a such shitty way of writing. It's even more common in things like tv shows (which probably serves as a kind of guide and learning material for trash RR authors).

Chinese web novels are actually written as serials. As in they release a new chapter that was written that very day or the day before.
This goes on for years and they literally just forget about old characters. There are also entire arcs where they do a bunch of stuff that never matter later for example an arc where they have spaceship battles then space travel is never mentioned again.

That wasn't my point, though. The Walking Dead show comes to mind, characters that were introduced in the first few episodes carried on throughout the entire show (switching from protagonist or allies to antagonist roles, then switching back again etc etc, what a terrible show by the way). Not just The Walking Dead, but many others too. I get that it may be different with movies and tv, and things like limited budgets don't allow for total freedom, but the same constraints do not apply in writing yet shitty Royal Road authors literally treat the movie script formula as a gold standard. Chinese authors don't have this problem.

Because web novels are real literature. In a hundred years when people look back at our time web novels will be a big part of what they think of. Meanwhile current literary novels will fall into complete obscurity.

I think in a decade or two we will get headlines about a "reading resurgence" because publishers will discover WNs and their readership. Obviously that will ruin WNs because of a deluge of normies, but they will get more popular.

The autists who write prog fantasy style stories don't usually know how to write romance well enough to mix it into the story without it being a shitfest
>>
>>25442813
>>25442860
Generally most people reading WNs want to focus on the main character, not dipshit side characters unless they're directly working for or against the main character in that moment (typically against from what I've seen, since seeing a hater is always fun).
If you want dipshit side character adventures, write omakes or a full on side story/spinoff. There is nothing more disappointing than getting an update and it's just Dipshit Loser #12's adventures in irrelevancy land.
>>
>>25443369
>irrelevant
It's on you.
>>
>>25443271
Nah, it's more that writing a romance that doesn't suck ass or piss someone off is difficult. Although, I can't remember the last time I read a romance that didn't just suck ass. Maybe in the first The Perfect Run book, where the insane protagonist has a fling with an equally insane woman. They had great chemistry and their relationship made sense.
But mostly, romances are superfluous, or they just don't make any sense, or they get in the way of whatever shit the author is going for. Imagine a romance in.... I dunno, Primal Hunter. Such a relationship (if it wasn't deranged) would necessarily change the protagonist into a different, more mature character. And most these protagonists aren't meant to change or evolve (except in power level). They're meant to be just sort of stupid, autistic weirdoes for the stupid, autistic weirdo audience to self-insert into. Or that's what I assume, in any case.
>>
>>25443279
that's also true but I really do think its more the audience disliking it
they treat everything with a sense of hyper rationality and selfishness which does NOT work with romance
>>
>>25443400
>The Perfect Run book, where the insane protagonist has a fling with an equally insane woman. They had great chemistry and their relationship made sense.
He should have doomed the world to have her back.
>>
>>25443400
>Nah, it's more that writing a romance that doesn't suck ass or piss someone off is difficult
its not any harder than writing an engaging story in general. I really do think the core concepts of the genres are opposed. if you think about what makes a romance work and what makes a progfantasy work, multiple elements clash
>>
I don't like how western literary fiction's direction went towards subtlety and realism after the 1800s. Asia didn't go that way to the same extent, and before 1800s Western fiction too was melodramatic and emotion focused instead of whatever modern literary and genre fiction is like. Journey to the West, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Gilgamesh were all probably literary by the standards of their time I bet.
>>
What are hidden gem xianxia novels that are Chinese?
>>
>>25443402
I feel as though it would only work if the relationship cannot be construed as a burden for the main character to have in the first place. The reader's just sees in the future an almost surefire arc where something happens to the weaker party as a way to get at the main character, and it's annoying.

I feel you would have to make a female lead that is strong enough to match up against the main character, while simultaneously not letting her steal the spotlight too much. Difficult.
>>

Of course if executed well it would work in a story's favor. It's not executed well often though, and so the sight of it turns off readers who've been burned in the past. At least that's that I think.
>>
>>25443448
I think when something is universally received poorly you need to dig deeper
There is almost zero overlap in these two genres. when it is received well its either a super minor subplot (Cradle) or a very small story relative to big names

0 instances of popular, major hit overlaps says something

I think the core of romance is beauty and the beast, basically. The man is a beast, and the woman helps turn him into a man. Problem with a lot of webnovel protagonists is, their whole appeal is that they are beasts. Although, another point of romance is to turn the boy into a man. A lot of webnovel protagonists are also boys, and again this is part of their appeal.

So a romance turning your beastyboy into a manlyman would defeat the whole point of the novel.

Personally, I think the development from beast/boy into man is a positive one, and that most of these protagonist are cringy retards who would be massively improved by such a change. But then, I'm not a massive reader of these books and so not part of the core audience so what I want probably isn't what they want.
It's also pretty hard to write a man if you are a boy yourself, entirely separate from it also being hard to write a romance if you don't know anything about it.
>>
I caught up with the web comic of eternally regressing knight, and I enjoyed my time but right around the end of the current season of it I've grown bored of the mc. >>
>>25443680
The problem you fail to see is, if one character is really fun, and then the story abruptly cuts away from that character to another, that's NOT FUN. Readers already hate this new cunt before they even know anything about him/her

The actual solution is to make every POV utterly bland, dull, and painful, so that any change of pace is actually welcome. It's a technique to make insufferable characters seem tolerable when given only in small dozes (and hopefully killed soon), and what they do is interesting enough to make up for them being retarded assholes. This is the bestselling GRRRM strategy.

I do it like this.

“Yuup… Gotta sleep for the next shift.” She nodded, stretching. I had to consciously keep myself from staring. She then turned around, placing her fists on her hips. “Is your name Crime?”
“Funny.” I replied, staring with a tight-lipped grimace at her smugly smirking face.
“…I'll let you in on a hint that it's a cue for you. You know my name”, She added, briefly leaning forward.
“I go by John…” I replied quietly, hoping she wouldn't hear me.
“Go by, or is your name John?”
I nodded along with my head lowered. “Yes, my name is John…” I feel mortified that I even tried that.
“Hm. Mary Striker”, Mary declared with her hand extended towards me.
“Yeah…” I nodded, grabbing her hand, though I didn't particularly feel like politely standing up due to my foot.
“John what?” She tilted her head with a smile.
I replied immediately, “John Burger.”
“Wooow. You really think I was gonna look you up, huh?” Mary asked with a smile that I couldn't tell if it was friendly, amused, or pissed off.
Was she trying to say that she wouldn't?
I didn't say anything. I was partially hoping she'd believe me that I was a deaf-mute.
She then let go of my hand. “Alright, John…” She shrugged, though with her accusative tone briefly returning. “Let her know that I'd like to see her again. To talk. Just talk.”

Let me casually tell you my life story in the most approachable way possible. I won't jump around the timeline. I won't leave things open to interpretation. And I definitely won't write above a seventh-grade reading level.
So grab a snack, get comfy, and let my corporate-approved casual voice carry you through this journey.
Don't think of me as some boring old narrator.
Think of me as a friend.
Actually, think of me as *you* from another timeline.
I know you. I see you. And I'll do everything I can to make this as easy and comfortable to read as possible.
You're autistic and have trouble reading between the lines? No worries. I'll explain every emotion and repeat every important point as many times as it takes.
I'll tell you exactly how I'm feeling.
*I'll spell out my thoughts in italics.*
"I'll even throw in some fun dialogue tags, just like those awesome books you grew up with," I promise warmly. "Isn't this nice? Isn't this so much better than that dusty old literature your teacher forced you to read? I know what I'd rather spend my free time reading."
I laugh and give you a reassuring pat on the back.
Condescending?
Who, me?
No way!
Dude, you're way too smart to be talked down to.
And if what I said came across that way, I'm genuinely sorry. I'm on the spectrum too, so sometimes my tone doesn't come across the way I intend. You understand, don't you?
Here, I'll throw in a couple of fucks and shits so you know this is a book for grown-ups.
Fuck.
Shit.
There we go.
Oh, and late-stage capitalism is bad. Corporations suck. Billionaires are cringe. We can all agree on that, right? See? We're basically the same person.
So you can trust me. I'm only human.
Just. Like. You.
Definitely not an LLM wearing human skin. Nope.
Anyway...
Mind throwing a few bucks my way on Patreon? I know how much you like seeing numbers go up.

They want to see them struggle, but win.
>>

I also started this.
Because it has a donghua, "Demon Hunter".
>>
>>25447859
Losing a battle is still tangible as a struggle if you're not retarded and know how to write a loss. If every time the MC loses a fight they lose all their shit and the winner fucks their girlfriend or something, yeah of course the readers hate to see that. The MC standing his ground against someone clearly leagues above him, losing, but still managing to prevent total loss and getting key information to make the rematch a victory is a struggle and foundational to a good 80% of Asian media (which is what pretty much every WN emulates).

>finally start writing it since yesterday
>come back to it tonight, several shots and vapes later come to the realization I can't power through the chapter wip because frankly I'm really just introducing yet another character that has no real on-screen presence and it's stonewalling my progress
Sucks when you realize something just doesn't work out after trying to plan out and finally acting on it, I can just omit it entirely but it feels so wrong since generally when I put it to paper, it just works. I guess before in my case I was writing and rewriting the same story version for a while so it was easier to inject new material and still keep the story consistent. But I can't do that here, or rather I got too lazy with not writing for a while. Fug man. It just knocks the energy out of you when you're forced to murder your darlings.

They're all pretty rushed. The authors often write them on the side of day jobs and the focus and drive to continue vary wildly along the way.

Even in my favorite wn, The Villain's Will to Survive, the pacing gets sometimes surreal. In the span of two 500-word chapters, the characters discover a volcano about to erupt, device a method to suppress the eruption, meet a bunch of people, fail once, try again, succeed, and wrap up a science expo and are then back home again. Even in any jap ln, that are pretty rushed themselves, that would take at least one full volume. But it's undeniably a page-turner.
>>
>>25447821
Well, you're still reading korean stuff after this, you're an idiot. For what it's worth, the chinese and japanese stuff don't have great endings too. And kdramas have the same issue too.

Endings are hard. But I can't help it's some kind of netflix model. Like they give the creator more time and money to make sure the quality of the earlier chapters/episodes is pretty good. Once the audience get hooked, they won't care about the rest of the work.
>>
>>25448358
Are endings hard? Surely, you have an ending in mind when you start the story. Otherwise it isn't a story.
>>
>>25448425
Knowing how a story ends and actually writing it to satisfyingly match and wrap up the rest of the narrative are very different things.
>>
>>25448435
Not really? Every single consequential thing that happens in your story should lead to the conclusion of the narrative. If you write something that doesn't, AND you write it such that it can't be edited out if it gets in your way, then you're retarded. GRRM being the most obvious example of this right now. Let your discovery writing take over completely and you just get an incoherent mess that leads to nowhere and resists and ending completely. You should just put your thumb on the weights whenever you get to inflection points; like, your sub-plot with character A can either lead towards the narrative's conclusion, or away from it. And it would be more authentic to the character to lead away from it. So you should put your thumb on the scale and pull them towards the narrative conclusion regardless, because otherwise wtf are you doing?
>>
>>25448455
Ask me how I know you've never written a complete story.

Don't waste your time. Gifted is a domestic drama. Mc was a bedbound, disabled person in his previous life, abandoned by parents, he died when he was 18 years old. When he was alive he had no parents and no family, he did not mature emotionally and intelectually, from what I understand he was almost retarded. He then reincarnates in a new world and is adopted by big breasted blond beauty and her stereotypical strict on outside grandfather. The entire novel is basically one big trope and a mommy fetish. Target audience are mentally stunted people with severe family issues. The plot, pacing and progression are all terrible, they might as well not exist at all because as previously mentioned 90% of the novel is just drama between mc and his mother.

The experience was how I imagined it must feel to fly, pulling me along like a cloud in an airstream, not a care in the world. Beneath me in the depths, something massive swam, outpacing the stream I found myself in. In its wake, my own current buckled for a moment, but I wasn’t afraid in the slightest. Something that big in the ocean of souls was undoubtedly a Guardian, patrolling for anything that shouldn’t be here, which basically meant anything that wasn’t a soul waiting for rebirth.

I'm trying to figure out wtf is appealing about it, it's one of the dumbest things I've ever read. Do people LITERALLY just have a fetish for numbers going up? Is it some weird Asiatic obsession with being born academically superior to your peers? I am genuinely confused (and also laughing my ass off).

In the comments the author said the protagonist isn't going to be an adult until book five lol. An entire book of a mega genius baby counting numbers to grind levels.
>>
>>25448944
This is why I write with a box of tissues next to me. All my emotional stinger hit me for critical damage when I write them and again when I re-read them.

>>25449232
This is why I have a very strict policy for comments, interactions with readers, and a persona I use for such interactions. I don't want to argue with readers nor get into parasocial relationships. I'm writing a story, people can read it or not, and if a comment really pisses me off I can just block the commenter, delete it, or ignore it. But engaging in anything but a positive, aloof way I consider problematic and try to avoid it as much as possible.

Yes. The RR audience tends autistic and immature and they want to read power fantasies (hence why cultivation and litrpg and opmc are always at the top of the charts).

You're supposed to use them to give you an initial boost to your AMAZON launch, where the audience is more normal and you have a chance to ACTUALLY pop off like DCC did.

It is what it is. The overall population of "people who read for leisure" is extremely tiny, so it's actually a good thing and impressive that there's an active MARKET of people who will not only read this stuff, but pay for it on patreon and amazon/KU.

>Do people LITERALLY just have a fetish for numbers going up?
YES! ..however progression in Gifted is genuinely bad, nobody who is into numbers going up will is gonna bother with this novel.
>>
What is a good “numbers go up” story? I don’t think there is such a thing. At least, I've not seen it.

Half the chapters are about the mc feeling bad for not telling his mother about his magic.
Just how much lamer can this novel get?

BTDEM and Azarinth Healer.
Primal Hunter maybe but it feels kinda flat to me at chapter like 25 but I'm willing to read the first volume in its entirety before dropping the series.
>>
>>25449518
I didn't like Azarinth Healer or Primal Hunter. I don't know what BTDEM stands for. Could you elaborate more on it?
>>
>>25449496
I have been looking at the most recent fictions some and a ton are obviously AI written without being tagged and some that have positive reviews have reviews which are all extremely generic and say basically the same thing. I hate ai everything is fucking fake now.

>>25449500
I am, genuinely, grateful for them and want to give them something fun and enjoyable but what the fuck lol. I feel like they're doing themselves a disservice.

>>25449501
What's an example of good progression? I'm trying to make sure my story hit what people want out of progression but I cannot bring myself to do actual litrpg. I might use the table shit to keep track of the protagonists equipment and very-not-systematic self-studying, which will increase in power monotonically.
>>
>>25449500
>>25449490
I thought most people wanted to read about cool dudes being badass and this story just blows my mind. All the reviews are like "I love stories about babies!" What the flying fuck?
>>
>>25449508
I can't be fucked to look up this slop, is his family not well off or something?

As in, are they barely scraping shit together?
>>
>a story about a baby progressing through a system from when he was an unborn fetus

Beneath The Dragon Eye Moons. It's another healer-fighter isekai story with a female protagonist. The setting is kind of interesting and it has a lot of good fights and levels going up but the relationship parts are flat and the end gets very repetitive and uninteresting when the MC runs out of actual threatening challenges. The story was intended to go longer but the author called it good at 16 volumes and left the series open to continue later, maybe under a new name, but then he melted down over unrelated things and I don't know if anything is coming out any time soon.

Number go up may simply not be for you if you don't like AH or PH.
>>
>>25449534
The first few chapters must be VERY well written. As in compelling, not as in snippets of prose you can screenshot and laugh at here.
Wise anons will study the first chapters of fictions that pop off hard like this.
>>
>>25449564
>he melted down over unrelated things
Such as?
>>
>>25449564
>Number go up may simply not be for you if you don't like AH or PH.
That's probably it. Fair enough.
>>
>>25449564
There's also what I call shop-likes. Stray Cat Strut and Magical Girl Gunslinger don't have levels or stats. They gain points (number goes up) from killing monsters and completing objectives which they spend on weapons, upgrades, abilities and supplies (power progression).
>>
>>25449567
Prose wise they are probably AI assisted. The initial 15 chapters or so lead up to the reveal of magic. Then the magic gets introduced and it's the worst and most simplistic magic system ever.
>>
You guys led me to believe that Archmage Coefficient was slop, but I like the characterization of the protagonist. I've only read three chapters though.
Also this magic system looks like math.
>>
>>25449564
>melted down over unrelated things
elaborate please
>>
>>25449670
>femc
No thanks

Also reading the reviews it's another 'autism' novel. It seems nowadays you cannot have a novel that just features regular non autistic people
>>
>>25449684
Are there a lot of these autism novels? I haven't really read any.
>>
>>25449686
Yeah, like most novels on rr.
>>
>>25449670
webnovels tend to be slop but guess what? we're all a bunch of piggies here
>>
>>25448520
unironically why do people hate MCs that are just straight up heroic?
>>
>>25449594
>>25449673
After BTDEM he started a new series he'd been wanting to write for years, but couldn't because BTDEM wasn't done. It was a basic bitch, poorly paced Harry Potter ripoff (Song of the Gift Giver). It didn't do well on either RR or Patreon and the dude wasn't having fun without the validation he normally got for BTDEM, so he dropped it. Maybe it's still going on Patreon, I dunno. But he made a post pointing out he's rich and it wasn't worth his time if it wasn't successful.

>>25449596
No worries. I can't stand horror at all. Not just finding it repulsive, but when it's not trying to gross me out, I find it boring. Everyone's got different tastes.
>>
>>25449748
That doesn't sound like a melty. A negative response sure but I get it.
>>
>>25449748
Fair enough. I really liked BTDEM until the big time shift. Glad it's finished now so I don't have to fall for it again award when the new ones come out.
>>
>>25449720
I cannot self insert into heroic MCs.
>>
>>25449507
Try some Russians. Level Up by Dan Sugralinov, Respawn by Arthur Stone. For more trad litrpg Barliona Series by Mahanenko and Reality Benders by Atamanov. Stat-heavy, backed by pulpy plots and characters. If you're asking if stats alone can carry a book, no.

>>
>>25449847
Yeah, yeah. Those authors are very sweet, though. Cheery, upbeat, Heinlein Juvie optimism. Playful, fun first. Not like you'd expect. Atamanov is the person I would vote least likely to have been born in Grozny.
>>
More like Grifted
LOL
>>

Are you sure they're slavs?
>>

It's shocking I know. But maybe there's a pendulum with a long, long swing.
>>
>>25449963
>>25449887
Like if you want to be grimdark and say your MC was born in Grozny in 1975 okay, I bend. A little thick but we get it. Instead Atamanov's work is clever and silly, like a shared joke. No permanent enemies, just gamesmanship and shifting power levels. Fun.

Don't do gender bender on RR. It's fore eastern audiences especially Korean because that's the only way they'll read femc. For the west gender bender is LGBT,

It popped off because the author has 5k followers from his previous fiction to carry over. Then retards flocked to it because "omg what a phenomenon, must be a masterpiece"

I would read this if it wasn't genderbend. Genderbend is for insecure retards who don't want to commit to femc. If you want to write femc just write femc, and if you don't then just write a guy. Genderbend is the worst of both worlds.

I don't think it's just that, big authors launch new stories all the time to middling success. Last month both Cognosticon and Mecanimus launched new fics, and they both turned out smaller than Gifted already even though Gifted is only like a week into RS. And those two are much bigger authors than Ellake was.

Clearly, there's something about a bland mommy fic with an idiot protagonist that appeals to the masses.
>>
>>25450406
5k followers is tiny in this age and there's at least one such author a month. usually 2 to 5
god the "analysis" in this thread is so shit
do not listen to posters here
>>
>>25449670
>Also this magic system looks like math.
It's obviously chemistry, retard-kun; it's literally called stoichiometry
>>
I've said it once and I'll say it again.

Gifted's success is not because it's written well, it's scratching the "regular guy is reborn as a baby in isekai world and becomes OP because of it" itch that is sorely demanded but barely scratched by anything remotely decent (coupled with a healthy dose of momentum from previous readership).

If you aren't working on a reborn-as-a-baby WN right now, you are NGMI.
>>
>>25450499
If you're still chasing trends and not creating trends, you're the one who's NGMI.
>>
>>25450451
>5k followers is tiny in this age
lmao sure bruh
>>
>>25450441
Cognosticon fucked up by not making the new story litrpg. It's still practically on the same level with Gifted, which should go to show how popular he is.

The 108 has a weird premise and half-assed cover but it's still a massive success and shows how having an existing following is a guaranteed ticket to RS #1
>>
>>25450530

The plans for my web novel keep growing and I now think it'll be 350k words or so, in three major arcs, by the time it's done, with a whole separate sequel loosely planned after that. If it flops should I just let it end at the first arc and upload arc 2 as a separate fiction to try and get on rising stars again?
