Sorry, my the site messed up for me. The text that was supposed to accompany that image was meant to say "Literal anime character traitor motivations, its possible this is explored deeper, but this is classic retarded archetypical anime character, who is inexplicably evil because he takes things absurdly to heart and therefore blames innocent people for shit that goes wrong in his life, who (usually) exists just so that the main character can say the obvious right and reasonable thing, that you shouldnt blame innocent people who are tangentially related to your misfortune for your misfortune because they could be nice and cool people, as the protagonist proves that by being unrelentingly nice and accommodating to the traitor character. Sometimes if the anime wants to be really edgy, they'll make none of the main characters efforts to be nice matter, and itll be some sad tragic story about how the traitor character couldnt let go of the demons of his past, even if he tried and the main character tried his hardest"Now, I honestly can't see anyway that Pasevalles can be made into a reasonable character with complex motivations that can actually be appreciated. Now that i have that impression though, my expectations have adjusted immensely, I already knew this, but I know this even more now. The characters...are not particularly good or interesting or deep. Fortunately this is not that bad of a thing because the strongest part of the series has always been the mysteries of how everyones different motivation connects to lead to...??? That [???] is what keeps things interesting, us learning new things, and characters learning those things, and seeing their reactions to those things and what it means for the characters and their perspectives.Thats basically why I'm not freaking out so much about this. I'm still much more mad about the king's power being superficial and one vassal state inexplicably having a degree of power that simply doesn't make sense without either a civil war, or the kings lack of power leading to problems.
>>25448074
Unlike other genres, fantasy is about the characters
>>25448074Spampiggy, please fuck off for forever.

I spent my whole life making writing my career, and now that I’ve actually done it, I’ve realized that I fucking hate writing.
Can we make this our next "hey this is good, let's all read it until everyone has so we can start hating it for being too popular" book?

>Author has an established series of award winning short stories>Suddenly a decade later he wakes up and decides: Ok, novel time. We're doing novels now. >It's mediocre at best or bad at worstExamples: Cugel's Saga, Swords of Lankhmar, Foundation and Earth
Finished. I definitely didn't like the 2nd book as much for all the reasons I listed. It gets even more contrived towards the end, with the afterward literally basically just saying "Out of nowhere more Thrithings come to overwhelm everyone" The Thrithings chase Miri, the Thrithings kill Duchess Canthia (I fucking knew Jesa would be made a permanent POV, I should have seen it coming) I cant even remember a reason why Miriamele ultimately decides to go east away from the port, she even says that she could be ambushed, if you're gettng ambushed either way, what does it matter?and it doesnt seem to matter, since Canthia was supposed to be headed towards the ships and somehow was ambushed by Thrithings??? Wtf isnt the port towards the city? Where the fuck did the Thrithings come from? Its also odd that theres no real border or armed soldiers patrolling. Blurs the lines between what territory exactly is the Thrithings and Nabbans, and you might say "well thats the point!" but no, youd be retarded, look at Israel right now, settler colonies dont just leave the borders undefined, thats sort of the entire point of a settler colony, to create defined borders.Honestly I'm just glad Jarnulf is still alive, I was waiting for his death the entire time for something shocking to happen. I mean Tanahay died I guess? But it happened so...silently I didnt even process it until Morgan's final chapter.I realistically can't give up on the series, as much as the length makes me dread some of future contrivances. But I'm definitely taking a break. Pushed myself through like 200 chapters to finish and it felt every bit forced on my part. I'm once again scared of long books.

>>25447602The Revenant of Surolifia is Chien's debut standalone novel from Rising Action, an indie press owned and ran by women. This is a gaslamp fantasy that's suffused with political considerations, though the focus is on relationship drama. The aesthetic is decidedly European, with the Belle Époque of France being the strongest influence. This isn't a romance. There's a single scene of two men kissing with implied sex, which is odd for several reasons that would require an in-depth analysis to explain. The few other intimate scenes are heterosexual and are more foreplay than anything else. The journey is what matters, not the destination. That's a nice way of saying that the plot is mostly set-up. For a trilogy that would be understandable. That makes this is a relatively small story that only hints at wider grand events. It does well in making it all seem meaningful and significant though. The most salient part of its political fantasy is whether working inside or outside against the system is the better choice. The two leading male characters are meant to show the clash between these perspectives, though one of them is far more active about it than the other. There's a lot of angst from both of them, but less direct involvement with each other than I expected. Then there's the female main character who may represent something related to the stated political argument or not, but either way she's important and does a lot, so much so that it made me wonder how much that the central argument mattered. That's one of many narrative choices in the story where I couldn't tell to what extent it was subversion, novelty, and/or suboptimal writing. The magic system is basically the manipulation of physical and mental attributes, along with one guy 100s of years ago who could control space. It's a convenient and versatile system, which relative to what it could be is barely explored. The physical aspect allow for doing stuff like making clothes more flammable, reducing the friction the of ground, and turning dust into a shield. It also can alter people. The mental aspect is for entering minds as a magical virtual space and doing various things, or just destroying their minds outright.I've buried the lede. This a very dramatic, theatrical even, story. Chien explicitly says in the acknowledgements that she wrote this as an anime. I believe that explains much of the disconnect between how serious the novel believes itself to be and what it actually is.I liked all of the characters and I found their tangled interplay and relations to have been intricately crafted. It was fun even when it was silly. The serious parts are nuanced, considered, and pragmatic. I really enjoyed that. I believe it would've been better to commit to being a melodramatic anime or serious political fantasy because trying to be both didn't serve it well. That being said, it works well enough.Rating: 3.5/5For more, go to Goodreads, which includes the author's response.

They will be hunted by the Church, shunned by their peers, having to fight both people and monsters to survive. When faced with inquisitors, slavers, terrorists, and more, Melas will have no choice but to overcome them to seize her own destiny, or fail and run from it all. Thus begins the tragedy of a girl from Earth, murdered unfairly and cast into an even more unfair world. For while cursed into this terrible fate, one small blessing will aid her throughout her story, and it's the wish granted to her before her rebirth:Make me the most powerful spellcaster in the entire world."

Chronicles of Amber is really good so far. I don't want to get ahead of myself because I always do, because I try to be positive and see the good, and Im also literally only 20 pages in. But this memory loss gimmick so far is a very cool way to introduce information in a non boring way that maintains or even heightens interest.
>>25450103I can't tell you for yourself. My perspective is not yours. I implore you though to read the good reads reviews of the 2nd book and make your judgement for yourself. If you're not put off, then I see no reason you couldn't enjoy it.

I can't help but think that Pagespammer would be far happier if he simply read acclaimed standalone books rather of chasing the illusory dragon of the epic doorstopper sf/fantasy series.

I've been on a militar sci-fi kick.Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie (sort of, it involves a warship ai and an officer, but it's pretty much just sci fi with some military colors)Old Man's War by John Scalzi (first 75-100 pages is the movie Cocoon, but once you get past that it's pretty interesting so far, the not-ftl they use is kinda wild.)Poor Man's Fight by Elliot Kay (i did all five of these, and i'm not sure i love it. I don't love the main pov character's gary stu qualities, but the premise otherwise is fantastic.)Vanguard by Jack Campbell (kinda the same negative as Poor Man's Fight, pov characters do no wrong, are honorable and capable beyond anyone else, but beside that i enjoyed all three books as part of this. I haven't touched The Lost Fleet yet, though)The Red series by Linda Nagata (there's a pattern, but at least in this it's part of the plot that the guy with plot armor has it because the macguffin called The Red is doing ai stuff for him and to him and that's what causes it, a little more millitary than sci fi compared to the pervious ones.)besides the obvious ones and the older examples, anything recent catch your eyes, anons?

Why do modern covers suck so much? This isn't even close to the worst I've seen, it's at least not some minimalist garbage. I feel kind of petty complaining about covers but It's something that still bugs me when I try to replace older stuff I've lost.
>>25450413because about a decade ago your basic cover would run from $300 to $500. I'm not even talking an art piece, but rather "abstract with a fitting font" kind of approach. add to that the need to be clearly legible in thumbnail size and you understand why covers are ass. you basically have to get limited print runs for old style artwork.
>>25450412I'm always hesitant to just go off based on tags because some authors are clearly gaming the system to get attention.

>>25450110The memory loss will turn out to be more than a cool way to introduce information. You'll see.

Starting to think that one guy who thinks Tad Williams is great and GRRM is shit is a literal and unironic retard, one of those "old good new bad" retard types that lack any actual critical thinking that would easily pierce such a binary. The way he talks about GRRM suggests he dislikes him because hes popular and mentioned more than Tad.Also Tad is a shit character writer, one of the things people like GRRM the most for. It's easy to assume some insecurity on your part.
Anybody read CS Lewis's Space Trilogy? Currently reading Out of the Silent Planet. The setting is extremely comfy and the writing is good. But it seems to be entirely in service of his tepid religious message, which I suppose was to be expected from Lewis.
