The first 100 pages are literally:>Exposition>Simon acts like a retard>Exposition>Exposition>Long ass descriptions of useless things like castle walls and rooms>Simon acts like a retard again>ExpositionWhat an awful writing. I'm sure it gets better later on, but this is a really bad start.
>>25452258>I'm sure it gets better later onit doesn't
For classic sci-fi/fantasy, which big name authors do I need to check out along the lines of Wells, Verne and H. Rider Haggard?
>>25452281E. E. Smith for his Lensman series, basically the grandfather of space opera. Might be insufferably optimistic nowadays.
>>25452271Bro and the worldbuilding isn't even creative, the dude is literally just copy pasting real races/societies and renaming them, like the Rimmersmen are clearly the Nords/Vikings, Erkynlanders are clearly the English and the main religion is clearly Christianity. Even the names of the fucking months lacks creativity, dude literally replaced November with Novander and December with Decander, like LMAO! I get a feeling the Sithis are quite literally Tolkien's elves as well (but small?), let's see if I'm right.
>>25452258novel is almost 700 pages long. back then authors didn't try to grab the writer in the first 50 pages with some insane shit to get them quickly invested. basically, author is aware it's a slow burn and takes his time.
>>25451925I like it when stories get their own songs.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEBVNVcAXhU
>Martin was almost 50 when he started writing ASoIaFIt's never too late, bros.
>>25452298Calling it a slow burn is being really generous. Nothing has happened, really. The closest thing to a story event so far is an event, and even that hasn't really caused any forward motion in the story as far as I can tell. Everyone is still in the same place doing mostly the same stuff as when the book started.I can't identify with most of the characters. Simon, for instance, is ostensibly the main character, but I can't help but think he's just a weird, lazy asshole. He shirks his work for no other reason than that he doesn't feel like it. He goofs off all day doing stuff that makes no sense to me. He's kind of a creep where women are concerned. I'm wondering why on earth this is the guy we're focusing on. I haven't been given the opportunity to get to know most of the other characters, either. The only character I can actually identify with is Rachel, as she's the only one who's had any kind of tangible motivations. The descriptions he gives of surrounding areas and places are baffling to me. He just throws around an endless stream of meaningless names that I have no context for. I just forget all of them and I don't seem to have lost anything for it.
>>25452312Yes, but lets not pretend he was an unknown until then. Not to mention extensive editing experience.
>>25452297>I get a feeling the Sithis are quite literally Tolkien's elves as well (but small?), let's see if I'm right.
>>25452319No one here was alive (or an adult) during those times to know for sure whether he was famous in the cultural sphere before ASoIaF or not, don't act like you know for sure.
>>25452317because you're supposed to reference the map on the inside. there's a reason fantasy novels came with those.
>>25452317That's not an uncommon reaction to Simon, though lol that you relate most with Rachel, that's pretty funny. I hope you finish the series because you'll have a lot of good times if you like her already.Simon is very immature at the start. He's written accurately for a 14yo scullion and they are often annoying and stupid too. The point is to see the contrast of Simon now vs. at various points to see his massive growth. You're not meant to like him yet.I find Williams to be an excellent describer of location, I'm not sure what you mean by meaningless names. Like, proper nouns? As with any fantasy book you're not meant to absorb it all at once, at this stage you should be paying attention to the ways names are similar, that'll help group them together in your mind. You could just look at the map, but over time it'll make sense. The sithi are only similar to Tolkien's elves in the sense that they both pull heavily from fae of legend. The sithi are substantially more active and interesting and play key roles in the story than in LotR at leastMy advice would be to make it to meeting Binabik and a chapter or two after that. If it still hasn't grabbed you then don't force it
>>25452101Red Rising and DCC even though I like them
>>25452317Simon isnt really the main character, it can be argued that there isnt one for the series. Josua is more important overall and is a classic hero type character. Simon was never met to be liked or relatable as he is a 14 year old kid.
>>25452206The solution is simple : Dont buy unfinished series.
>>25452206What CAN publishers do when author just doesn't write? Mind you, he signed a contract for how many books the publisher expects out of him. The likes of GRRM can basically do whatever because he's a cultural phenomena, but how is Rothfuss getting away with it?
>>25452481He probably threatens to kill himself daily so the publishers ignore him in the hopes he'll just go away. As much as GRRM irritates me, he isn't as much of a scummy hack like Rothfuss.
>>25452481sue for breach of contract to recover advance payments, cancel future book deals, withhold unpaid milestone funds, or legally release the author from their agreement. it's usually the last because they realize they won't get anything back.

>>25452258>>25452298Do they actually do stuff that's just not related to the main plot or do they literally do nothing for 700 pages? Because for me personally a book about that's just random disjointed events that only come together later sounds awesome.

>>25452298>>25452317>>25452341>>25452527I wonder how that happened. We went from fast-paced pulps to door stopping trilogies and whatever stage we're in right now.
>>25452258>I'm sure it gets better later onIf only. Simon is a complete retard, and never gets better, not even in the second series, which is set decades later.
>>25452341>The point is to see the contrast of Simon now vs. at various points to see his massive growth.NTA, but I started The Last King of Osten Ard, and Simon is the same whiny, indecisive, lame bitch he used to be thirty years ago.
>>25452541I honestly don't think much has changed. People still think you need to publish a trilogy to be recognized as a legitimate writer. It's simply never been easier to go the independent route and eventually get picked up by a publisher.
>>25452541Trilogies got popularized because of LOTR's publisher (which is funny because Tolkien himself had written LOTR as a single book). 3+ book doorstopper series became a thing because of R*bert J*rdan's Wheel of Shit.

Just finished Second Apocalypse. There is no way that R. Scott Bakker is not a closeted gay guy,
>>25451910The Demon Star - Jesse Aragon (2026) The Demon Star is a debut standalone science fantasy novel with horror elements. It's one of the most impressive and ambitious debuts I've ever read. If it had maintained its peak quality it'd be among the very most enjoyable books I've ever read. Even with its flaws its better than most anything else. It's sort of like arguing the quality of the top 25 vs top 5 out of 500.When the annual eclipse caused by the Demon Star arrives The Church of the Black Sun harvests people as an offering to the six gods. Marking those who are to be harvested is a priestly duty. It began when they were conquered centuries ago. The powers used at that time deeply scarred the world. The High King still rules, though in name only.Brother Jacen, a disgraced priest, exorcises vermin-like demons that literally crawl into people. He's one of the most powerful telepaths, but due to a tragedy he's fallen to nearly the bottom of the church rankings. Others expect nothing more from him than to be in a state of constant drunkenness. A nameless 14 year old girl whose potential surpasses his own has been assigned to him for training. When a novitiate joins the church their memories are erased. If they proves their worth they're allowed to regain their identity.Ysira is possessed by a demon of immense ability. She's lived on the outskirts of society working for a mysterious man of foreign origin ever since it happened. The consequences of what she did in her youth will be far greater than she could've ever imagined.I'm not saying anything about the plot because I believe it's better to go in not knowing much. The reveals are wonderful and epic in scope. I love the ambiance of the setting. All the major characters are great and even the minor characters who are only briefly present are meaningful additions. So much of it reminds me of other books I've greatly enjoyed without seeming too close to them. The story is told in three parts, each of which could've been their own book for how much they cover. This is a fast paced book that gets stuff done. The first part is extraordinary with how it sets up everything so quickly and completely. The second part is where the only problems come in, which are only relative to the greatness of the other two. The pacing here is more like it usually is in a massive novel. This causes there to be pacing whiplash in both entering and exiting the second part. The third part, and especially its climatic sequence, is a masterpiece. It's definitely one of the best I've read for a long time. The final chapters are grand. I couldn't have asked for better.I don't want this to be a standalone. If it is, it's among the best I've read. If it isn't, and it maintains this level of ambition, then it's the start of a truly awesome series, in every sense of the word. Regardless, I await whatever comes next from Aragon. She has the potential to become one of my all-time favorite authors.Rating: 5/5

Now that I'm reading more fantasy books I'm realizing the genre is way less creative than I first thought. Most world and races are either derivative of Tolkien or old myths or just renamed from real life. Even Martin falls prey to that, a lot of his books are just retellings of real historical events with a coat of fantasy.
>>25453151No, I tried reading that around when it released and I didn't have any interest. You can check what else I've written by looking in the archives or goodreads. As to whether you can trust my reviews, that depends on what you mean by that. If you mean that you'd enjoy it as well, then no, I don't believe you have enough information for that to make an informed decision.
>>25453153Agreed. After a while, it becomes difficult to start a new book, because reading the summary of it, if feels like you already encountered all of those plot points before, so there's no point in even reading it.

>>25453082Le church bad is a pretty cringe trope. It comes down to order vs. chaos. Religion represents order, its absence represents chaos. Either extreme is bad. Order=bad stories are usually stories about how much you either hate your parents or want to kill the jews. If it's a fantasy novel where the MC is a 14 year old girl, then it's probably a story about how much the author hates their parents. Which is the worst version of the two.I think religion/order=good stories are much more interesting, because they're about struggling against the merciless nature of the world itself, rather than against arbitrary human oppression.Although, the modern world definitely has too much order to it. But stories about how much your hate your parents probably don't have much relation to that. If anything, those stories tend to be about how you actually want more order, you just don't want your parents to be the ones to bring it. I.e., they're not about the problems of the current state of the world at all, and if anything, taken as guidelines, seek to reinforce its problems.
>>25451974Next level is Palmer Eldritch. Or if it's too hard go read Electric Sheep.
>>25453233if you think that depicting religion as bad is about hating one's parents, then you still have a very immature understanding of why people dislike religion.

>turn on the TV>it's another "Christian judges everybody as hard as possible in between baby sacrificing sessions" episodeYawn.
I have a pretty good idea for my fantasy book, the problem is that the ending is kinda controversial and will make people hate it despite being a god-tier story. Spoilers if you wanna know the ending: the main character will get cucked after nearly dying to protect the woman he loved. What do you think? Should I change this to appeal to a broader audience?
>>25453243I understood that you made a the same lazy assumption that many people do when they encounter anti-religious sentiment. You immediately reduce their sentiment down to teenage angst. It's the same prattle I've heard a thousand times.
This is why I also post what I write here. I get far more replies when it's anonymous than when it isn't on Goodreads. There are several others reasons why that's the case though.
>>25453247love interests are a really lame motivation for characters
>>25453247I think that's what Tad Williams wrote in Memory, Sorrow, Thorn that's being talked about. It's more common than you think and there are a lot of complaints about it here from a vocal minority.
>>25453248let me sum up my post for you then, since you seem genuinely too illiterate to understand it and I am too obstinate to let stupid shit I shouldn't care about goI explicitly stated that I think religion=bad. but that most religion=bad stories are actually just about how the author hates their parents. you interpreted this to mean that I think religion=good, because you are a retard. and obviously also lazy, because you retards just can't stop accusing other people of being what you are.I am a genuine fedoralord with many fedora friends and acquaintances over a very long time, and I would say roughly half of them are unironically motivated by spiting their parents. these are also the same people who have gone full-blown feminism/LGBTQ/"atheism+"/etc. as a replacement dogma, because they don't actually think religion=bad, they just think their parents religion=bad and want it replaced by their own religion instead. and what does a 14 yo girl fantasy MC in a LGBTQ-tagged religion=bad story smell like to you? does it actually smell like religion=bad, or does it smell like my parents' religion=bad? I guess this will be your second iq teste of this interaction

>>25453268I will admit, that I would have bet on the notion that you thought religion=good. However, I didn't actually assume that. I didn't actually accuse you of any being pro religion. I only accused you of making poor assumptions of people who are anti-religion.Even accepting that you are anti-relgious yourself, you still have an immature understanding of why people dislike religion. You still made the bad assumptions. And I say the assumptions are bad, because in all of the stories I've consumed where church/religion was bad, I can't even recall one where it can interpreted as such a shallow thing as the author exercising a teenage level of angst toward their parents. I mean, maybe I have encountered a story like that and forgot about it. But the fact that I can't think of it now, just goes to show how truly rare it is.Like I said, I've encountered your prattle 1,000 times. Not all of which came from pro-religious people. Sometimes anti-religious people make the same bad assumptions. There is something about criticizing institutions, that makes people like you automatically assume that the critics are immature. Critical of police? "erm, teenage rebellion" Critical of corporations "erm, laziness. You don't want to work". Critical of religion? "erm, teenage angst. You hate your parents." Critical of politics? "erm, you're only saying that because your parents supports that party, and you hate your parent. Grow up. You're not a teenager anymore"On and on. It's always the same with you. If I'm guilty of my own assumptions, it's assuming that that you're one of those pricks I just described. I don't have a name for them. Maybe just "bootlicker" works. Just generally licking boots whatever the topic may be.
If you think religion is bad what the fuck are you doing reading high fantasy? This entire subgenre was created by a catholic "fanatic".

That isn’t intended as a grab for your pity, just as a simple statement of fact, objective and cool. The nature of my condition diminishes my capacity to love and be loved. A man in my circumstances, wide open to everyone’s innermost thoughts, really isn’t going to experience a great deal of love. He is poor at giving love because he doesn’t much trust his fellow human beings: he knows too many of their dirty little secrets, and that kills his feelings for them. Unable to give, he cannot get. His soul, hardened by isolation and ungivingness, becomes inaccessible, and so it is not easy for others to love him. The loop closes upon itself and he is trapped within.Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg

I like House of Open Wounds more than I do City of Last chances, because the hospital/on the march setting is far more interesting, but I absolutely hate this kind of writing. It feels like the author imagined his books getting adaptations later down the line and this being some totally thigh slapping hysterical comedy scene that would make it into the all "God being neurotic and cranky for 7 minutes" tumblr compilation videos and I'm not really feeling up to finishing the series. I'm not saying Last chances didn't have this but it never felt this egregious. Can I get some opinions on Joe Acrombie's The First Law? Is it also written in this modern fantasy rogue way where everyone's quipping like they're mugging for an adaptation's quotable scenes catalog?
>>25453529Unfortunately I found first law to be a disappointment. I can only close my eyes and recall the opening chapter where Glotka is torturing some poor soul. Cue the MCU style quip from his assistant as he hands him the tongs.

>>25452258It gets a lot better, but Simon remains a retard despite gradually maturing. Simon is a retard in the sequel series too. It is a fundamental part of his characterization. And as for that sequel series, the entire first book of that is effectively a prologue in which very little happens and most characters are more or less retarded. Something happens in the middle which seems like it would make the main plot start moving, but in the end very little ensues of that. I'm currently in the middle of the second book, and the plot has noticeably progressed and appears to be developing in a grimdark direction. It's like Tad William thinks he needs to make the reader familiar with every main character and the political situation in every country before he can start moving the plot. It's as if Tolkien had opened LotR with a thick volume (set between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the real LotR) introducing the world and the characters - including several sympathetic POVs from Mordor - before the real plot gets to progress beyond "Sauron has returned and is planning something".>>25452341The Sithi absolutely are heavily based on Tolkien's Elves of the Silmarillion variety. Tad Williams has clearly read about the Darkening of Valinor, for one thing. There are various minor surface details attempting to obscure this, though, and in the sequel series the evil Elves appear to draw on the Empire of the Petal Throne for their social organization to fill in the blanks left by Tolkien.
>>25453529If you want le heckin grimdark, I would recomend Warhammer 40k slop instead of Acrombie. If you want to give First Law a shot, I'd say read The Heroes and see if you like it. It's the 5th book but can be read as a standalone.
>>25453569The Way of Kings was too long but tolerable, I liked Words of Radiance. I didn't bother finishing Oathbringer because I wasn't interested in Sanderson's universe. Dalinar is cool though.
>>25453569Literally the opposite. Way of Kings is a 1,000 page prologue. Words of Radiance is the true start of the series. Also Rhythm of War is overhated.
>1,000 page prologue
>>25453569>Everyone says The Way of Kings is great but the sequels are bad, why is that?Mostly because the best part of Way of Kings was the character Kaladin. He's a great character in that book, and his chapters dominate the narrative. You first meet him as a slave on the brink of despair, and you spend the entire novel seeing him trying to survive, almost succumbing to suicidal urges, and also seeing what led to him being enslaved through flashbacks. It's a dramatic narrative arc that culminates in a truly cathartic moment of triumph for him. Kaladin isn't even the most important character in Way of Kings, but pretty much everybody who enjoys WoK enjoys it because of Kaladin's chapters. The books after WoK have much, MUCH less focus on Kaladin. And when he does show up, it feels like Sanderson had no idea what to do with him so he just retread the exact same character arc from WoK, only compressed because he gets fewer chapters, and for dumber and dumber reasons. Then on top of this, many of the characters who replace Kaladin as a primary focus are not nearly as compelling as he is. More and more, you're forced to conclude that WoK was good on accident, and Sanderson doesn't actually understand why the book was so well received.
>>25453515This is the same conclusion I came to many years ago. As early as like 2018 I decided that ASoIaF was done, and I would treat it as if would never be finished.
>>25453610>NoCould have fooled me.

>>25453569I read it all and I’ll tell you now it turns into marvel shit which is ok if you’re into that. Also in the 5th book he adds too much gay and trans shit for my taste. Personally I think Warbreaker is Sandersons best book from what I’ve read so far. Unfortunately he seems to have abandoned plans for any sequels.
>>25453835Some random anon is just having fun. Disregard.
Bros, Tower Lord was not worth it. I should have stopped after book 1.The first half of the book is just slow chess pieces moving around. The sole protagonist from the last book, Vaelin, is one of four POVs now, and he barely does a thing until the end. The other characters don't do much either. In the second half, their island gets invaded and they start fighting back, but even then most of that action happens to Reva, the only brand-new POV character in the book. She's a Mary Sue, successfully leading the defense of a city even though she was raised in a barn by a mad priest, and killing enemy elites with ease despite being too weak to draw back a bow and only knowing the sword for a couple months. The names in this book are way too similar, and most of the side characters are forgettable. I had to Ctrl-F the previous book a number of times for ones that I'd forgotten, which I've never had to do before. Had to Ctrl-F this book too during the second half, for that matter. Other things just come out of the blue, like this one guy who wanted to kill Vaelin because Vaelin killed his dad, but that wasn't in the previous book at all. Also, this book just has a lot of weird shit in it. One of the POVs (who was just a kid in book 1) gets repeatedly raped via mind control by a 300-year-old witch during his portion of the first half. Probably the only reason they were able to print this was because the victim is male, the author would've gotten canceled otherwise. One of the other POV characters ends up sleeping with her dead uncle's whore at the end, which has gotta be a 20+ year age gap since she's a teenager.Probably the worst part about this book was that the plot was just interesting enough to keep me reading it despite its flaws, instead of dropping it. Took me over a week to finish.2/5
>>25453852That's a shame that it didn't work out.
What is the modern equivalent of pulp characters? i.e. series of short stories with a shared protagonist. Is there anything like that left?
So I have finished reading The Well of Ascension, the second Mistborn book. And i gotta be honest I didn’t enjoy it. This book was an absolute slog to get through. The premise is interesting sure but the majority of the book is just filler. The new character introduced is terrible. Vin sucks in this book and Zane is one of the worst characters ever written, his whole poison back and forth with his father is genuinely just stupid and doesn’t make a lot of sense. The one good character I did like was Tindywl. But a lot of legacy characters are wasted of forgotten about especially Dockson. And the worst offender is it’s just boring. Not even the Sanderlache saved this one for me and honestly it has made me not wanna read book 3.

>>25453895Zane carving a Z into his father’s lover’s breast was pretty hot. That antidote woman.
>>25453895I like Tindwyl's name. Zane was the most edgy character in the entire Cosmere.
>>25453057It has a genuinely interesting premise and uses it as an excuse to tell lurid stories about tomboyish nazi girls with exaggerated Scarlett O'Hara accents capturing and then sexily interrogating and lesbo-raping libtard secret agent girls. The 90s were an incredible decade.

I took a random German science fiction book and made an interlinear text with AI. I like it. It motivates me to read, because I struggle to motivate myself to read fiction by the stories themselves, but I can motivate myself to read fiction when I read it to learn languages. Not sure I'll keep going with this particular book though. It's "Das zerrissene Land". It's one of those books that are in a franchise of games, books etc. This franchise is called Shadowrun. I don't like the fact they have scantily clad women on many of the covers for other titles in the franchise. I don't know why in particular many books and games in science fiction and fantasy have this. Seems to be the same thing as with many pulp magazines. It seems like science fiction and fantasy are targets of this particular kind of moral subversion to a greater extent than other genres, although I guess the pulp magazines had this for all genres. I can't take any media with such pictures seriously. But it's probably the publisher that decides to have it and not the authors. Thoughts on making your own interlinears? Thoughts on game/book franchises? Thoughts on lewd and semi-lewd images in book or game publishing, particularly in the science fiction and fantasy genres? Thoughts on Das zerrissene Land and the other books in the trilogy, or Shadowrun novels in general?

>>25455951Yes, it does move very fast, as I noted. Maybe I should post the commentaries I've been posting on Goodreads here as well. My rating was based on how it made me feel more than anything else, which is a very subjective thing.
>>25455826Sounds like every Discworld book in existence.
>>25455969>just history stuff mostly.reccs? I'm slowly worried im pivoting towards boring non fiction interests with how many fantasy and scifi stories with historical or political pitfalls have made me seek out actual history to supplement what I feel is missing to make the fiction make sense.

>>25455969I'm slowly reading through An Empirical Introduction to Youth. Interesting to know that back in Rome, you were a full-fledged doctor or lawyer by 16 years of age. Nowadays our school system dumbs you down and babies you long-term for no reason.
>>25456024They didn't have mass public education back then.
>>25455692I only self-insert in Fallout Equestria.
>>25456029Mass public education has mostly been ultimately negative.
>>25456024>for no reasonin good school systems, it's due to work intensification; we learn more as we need more knowledge in the modern world. if you're only going to be an illiterate farmboy or supermarket checkout girl all your life, you can be done by 15 or younger, just like in Ancient Rome(you think the jeets we import to do these jobs have any higher schooling level? lol)if you want to be an engineer, scientist, surgeon, or other super-specialist, you won't stop learning until you're nearly thirty, actually. and a lot of that time would be at work.(this is a problem we are facing with AI; it's being used to replace job positions which are basically apprenticeships)in bad school systems, it's so that illiterate retards can get a shiny piece of paper after partying, drinking, and fucking the first quarter of their lives away

Another great thread. Let's keep up the productive and on-topic conversations in the next one!

I am an unhappy man my friends. I learned of the Fantasy masterworks line. Only to see they are out of print! What do I do?
>>25456161Download them from Russia?
are any of the star wars novels worth reading
>>25456166Thrawn trilogy is pretty good.Yoda Dark Rendevous was fun.I heard good things about the Darth Bane trilogy and Kenobi.Revenge of the Sith novelization is pretty great and fixes a lot of the flaws in the movie.Avoid anything by Karen Traviss, Chuck Wendig or Kevin Anderson.
>>25456166I unironically enjoyed The New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force as a teen. I didn't read any of the Expanded Universe stuff that led up to it either. The Yuuzhan Vong were edgy but kino.I liked the clone commando books too, especially the Order 66 one. The author does wank the Mandolorians as these ubermensch super soldiers especially in the later books which got tiring and cringe really fast.
>>25453057I haven't but after a slump of not reading any scifi for months and after a period of being engrossed in South African history (predominantly the border war) and after mulling it over for a few days I've decided to start reading it. Thanks for the recommendation anon.
>>25456166No. Nothing Star Wars-related is worth engaging with in any manner whatsoever. Might as well be a Star Trek fag it's equally cringe and gay.

I'm reading The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and it's literally isekai before isekai was a thing.
>>25456236yeah
Dante's Divine Comedy is Isekai. George MacDonald's Phantastes is Isekai.Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Isekai Lovecraft's The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath is Isekai. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is Isekai Many that are much older are.

Finished the first book in the Chronicles of Amber. Really, it wasnt that good. I've yet to come across a fantasy book with particularly well written deeply constructed characters that don't feel like they exist merely or mostly to push the plot in a direction, so because of that I wont criticize any sci-fi or fantasy on that grounds until I encounter something that makes me feel like the lack of that can be a significant flaw. As for the other aspects of the book. Its just...simple? How do you get to the Amber?: Uhhh magic the fake world till you get to the real world. How does Corwin get his memory back?: Uhh enter the special magic place where you have to magic really hard this time I promise, and get your memory back. How does Corwin get his army to challenge eric?: Magic yourself to a different world where you encounter a peoples that are simple enough to follow you with little convincing because they think you're a god. How does Corwin lose?: Eric has more special magics and can manipulate the weather to his whim. Also hes got more allies, but mostly its the weather thing, since thats what mostly makes one of his allies not join Corwin. How does Corwin recover his eyesight after losing his physical eyes?: Uhh he has special magics that let him heal things more quickly than everybody else, the story tries to pretend this totally makes sense by bringing up that this happened at the beginning of the story, and when he recovered from the black plague (circular argument fallacy). How did Corwin ultimately escape his cell?: Uhhh super strong powerful sorcerer of old that invented the Trump Cards that all the princes and princesses use to communicate with eachother, made a card randomly that let him literally walk into the existence of Corwins cell, Corwin asks him to basically carve a card into wood or a wall or something of a lighthouse he wants to escape to, and Corwin walks throught that when hes done, to escape. Basically he got lucky the sorcerer showed up, and asked him to magic like crazy. You see what I mean? This is how basically every single event occurs in the book. Things sort of "just happen" theres rarely any real reason for why, they just happen, and you accept that and go on the ride the story takes you. I can't even call it bad really, its just not interesting, when there aren't reasons for why things happen, theres nothing deeper to understand other than the passive knowledge gathering of what new things can happen. The book was such a breeze to read— barring the multiple typos, and the formatting legit being kind of fucked—that I honestly don't mind reading the next one. But I'm not in a rush. I plan to start another series soon.
Defenestrate pagespammer and gut him alive
>>25456490>there aren't reasons for why things happen, theres nothing deeper to understand other than the passive knowledge gathering of what new things can happenokay, but>particularly well written deeply constructed characterswhat are your expectations for this?would you find, say, Jodi Picoult deeper or shallower than what you want?or Jeffrey Archer?

I read a few science fiction books and I kind of get the appeal. However I never read any fantasy books. What is fantasy about and what is the appeal, in your opinion?
