I don't know why the Guntank was an evolutionary dead end. There should've been plenty of uses for a support mobile suit that can lay down devastating indirect fire.

Space combat is where most of the high end MS development goes, and there's not really any need for treads in space. Heavy firepower is always useful, but there's no need to tie it to treads.

Once you bring beams into the mix, there's no longer any need for ammunition or that much recoil mitigation, so you can just fit beam cannons onto regular combat MS to produce a decent support fire machine.

There's no need for legs either but mobile suits with legs continued to proliferate.

The gun cannon needed to kneel for support even with its smaller beam weapons, so the need for recoil mitigation is still present.

Hence why the Guncannon has many direct and indirect descendants.

Legs and treads will both work on land and inside colonies, but at least legs mount thrusters for space use. Take it another way as well, legs are just more popular.

It also stood while firing its beam rifle, the kneeling is optional. Crouching and kneeling was more for its 240mm shell-firing cannons. Point is that beam cannons have less recoil than comparably sized projectile cannons.

There was an episode in Zeta where a MS had its legs blasted off but everybody was like, oh well the legs weren't doing anything and it continued to fight like nothing happened.

The feddie penny-pinchers probably thought that since the GM could do most of the work that it would be cheaper in the long run to make GM fire support variants instead of making another mobile suit.

Guncannon is just not goofy enough to be a meme.

It’s because Getter-3 and its descendants always sold the poorest.

Why not just Zeong?

Shin Guncannon

Because then it stops maneuvering like a mobile suit and moves more like a ship, fighter, or some mobile armors. I mean yeah, AMBAC is mostly a cop-out answer and it rarely ever gets realistically displayed in animation, but it does work in theory at least.

It has a core block system. slap a space mobility/modified core booster on the bottom half and now you have a flying artillery platform.
