What's with Gundam goatee and why do they keep the goatee to other Gundam?

The original Gundam's design was loosely based on feudal japanese armor, and in many cases that spot on the chin is where the helmet cords are knotted. This is also how we arrived a v-fin, and they were far from the first to do that.
