I saw a Japanese guy on Twitter do a deep dive into hobby magazines from the time and it seemed like Layzner was selling decent enough that they even said a Mk-2 kit was on the way. It really looks like the Sanyo incident was the killing blow.

>>
>>22758382
I thought the exact opposite. It was absoutely boring as sin in the first half where absoutely nothing happens for several episodes and then when the timeskip happens and Eiji starts caving Gradosian skulls in with a pair of duel tonfas and Rowan turns into Kim Philby, that’s when it started to get really good. Shame about the ending though, at least the OVA fixes it somewhat
>>
It had better ratings than Zeta Gundam.

Why can't Sunrise reboot/remake Layzner and add the scrapped ending?
Surely Japan wouldn't mind that 100 years after the heater incident
>>
>>22763229
The scrapped ending was just kind of a Votoms retread mixed with Southern Cross's backstory.
>>
>>22758343
I remember hearing that Layzner was aired at the same timeslot as Zeta Gundam and most people watched Zeta instead of Layzner. I might be wrong.
>>
>>22763680
That’s a lie. First of all, Sunrise wouldn’t be competing against themselves. Second, Layzner did a bit better than Zeta in the ratings if not in sales.
>>
>>22763680
Nearly every JP wikipedia article has the day each episode first aired for an anime. It's not hard to see they were on different days of the week.

>>
>>22769483
It's because Eiji's mission feels completely hopeless the whole time. The show starts with him arriving too late to stop a massacre, then he struggles to get a message to Earth which you know is a fool's errand anyway because humanity is so ridiculously outgunned (and even if they weren't, does he really expect anyone to believe his lunatic rambling). Realistically all his newfound Earth friends would die one by one over the course of the show too, but that'd probably be way too much of a downer.
>>
>>22772763
What I liked about the show was that the protagonist DIDN'T save the day...holy shit that time skip made me respect how gritty the occupation was.

Oh and Zakaal's V-Max Supercharge was Kaioken before Toriyama penned the Saiyan arc.
>>
>>22772764

I wonder if model kit sales shaped some of that. It almost never seems to work when a show tries to emulate a White Base trio arrangement so the Baybull and Buldy effectively disappear and the resistance didn't get their own SPTs until the long lead up to the Doll, which arrived right as the show got canceled. Why focus on what's not selling.

This is my main concern, like the occupation doesn't feel real to me and the little kid with with his wonder dog is so dumb and unnecessary. They make the Gradosian look like cartoon villains, missing all their shots and acting retarded during important times.
I think everyone should have died by the end, it wouldn't make that much of a difference, maybe keep the main girl alive (and the dog because dogs never die in movies)

It's a pretty common criticism that learning into the Mad Max aesthetic defanged Grados as an efficient space military.
>>
>>22778502
They were never presented as one outside of overwhelming technological superiority. A kid like Eiji being able to steal an entire shuttle full of SPTs and Gosterro being Gosterro already showed that

>>22791555

To add to what >>22791610 said, Anna's role in the story is to witness Eiji's heroics, which is why when Grados succeeds in conquering Earth, she has to motivate the resistance into preserving Earth culture as the triabulations she and the Cosmic Culture Club survivors is what inspired Earth.
>>
>>22791620
Preserving human culture was supposed to tie into the revelation that the Grados in the story were actually humans abducted long ago but had replaced the original aliens over time. Their supercomputer made them think they were the real Grados so that its culture would be preserved.

Seeing how Japan likes to revisit or remake older anime and manga, I pray that somebody in Sunrise decides Layzner needs a proper treatment and remakes the anime as a 52-episode series as it was intended.

You'll get a 12 episode version instead.

Fine so long as it picks up right after episode 38's midpoint before they superrushed everything.

I'm 23 years old and I have more enjoyment watching Layzner, Dougram, Dancougar, L-Gaim, Dunbine, Vifam, Galient, VOTOMS, and Dragonar than the last 10 years of mecha.
>>
>>22789904
Nothing against Anna but why didn't they just make her a bit older and more developed looking? I get she's only 14 but they could've made her 16 like Simone. It just comes off as a bit creepy even when Anna got older.

Also I thought Simone going from entitled girl to sexy resistance fighter was awesome.
>>
>>22793948

>Nothing against Anna but why didn't they just make her a bit older and more developed looking?

I imagine she must have been awfully smart for her age, hence why she got mto be a part of the Cosmic Culture Club opreating in Mars until hell broke loose. Which adds to why she took it upon herself to preserve Earth's culture when Grados when after anything related to it.
>>
>>22792695
What I love about Ru Cain is that he got his ass handed by Eiji and trained his ass off to curbstomp him with Zakaal's Red Power Supercharge. Most times, it's the other way around when the protagonist gets owned and has to painstakingly claw their way to challenge the bad guy who has a hax ability.

Didn't finish this show, so I could be retarded and incorrect, but I don't think Layzner did anything particularly wrong.
It's by no means forgotten.
Still gets merchandise, home video releases and the occasional SRW role. I think that's a decent place for an 80's mecha series to wind up in.

Just because it didn't spawn a franchise like Z Gundam or VOTOMS did doesn't make it a failure.
>>

It doesn't need to be a big franchise. Just a better resolution to all of its story arcs.

THIS

For god's sake, I want a revamp of Layzner with a proper 52 episode storyline. That and a reimagination of L-Gaim that incorporated all the concepts in Nagano's Art of L-Gaim books.

Modern Japan is too onions to appreciate manly mecha like Layzner. Daba is more Chad than any recent protagonist.
>>
>>22841879
Eh, Eiji was sorta twinkish in the first half of the series and then he became a Kenshiro-clone in the Hokuto arc. So I'm sure they'd be able to transition to Eiji's transformation to naive teen to hardened guerrilla.

As for Daba from L-Gaim, he's probably akin to Lelouch from Code Geass in holding his cards close to him and even deceiving his friends and allies. So I wouldn't say he's more alpha than contemporary mecha leads so much as he's far more savvy and definitely even villain-esque on how far he's willing to go.
