Is mecha a genre for old men now?
>>
>>22891319
yeah
>>
>>22891319
Has been since the early 2000s
>>
>now
Lmao.
>>
Mecha is a completed genre. It gas said everything it can say.
>>
>>22891319
It has always been this way, Yamato, harlock and Gundam were made for adults.

It's true, of course there were series for kids, but the titles that are still remembered today were made for adults.

>>22891362
From what year is the photo?

>>22891371
It's AI generated
>>

This is the earliest date I saw in a quick 2 minute search, but many of the articles were simply not dated so it's conceivable that it goes back further
>>
>>22891380
That seems about right. I think there are some Kamen Rider Gaim toys on the shelf behind them.
>>
>>22891380
Yeah, it looks like early 10's.
Now I feel old
>>
Mecha fan years are kinda like dog years, we're all older than we think
>>
>>22891325
>since the early 2000s
Nah, SEED was very popular among youngsters back then and there were still quite a few children's /m/ shows being produced like the Transformers anime shows.
>>
>>22891360
Gundam was a children's show.
>>
All these “mecha is dead” claims are bullshit. Shinkalion is a kids show and it’s racked up almost 200 episodes across its three series, the latest of which is still going on.
>>
>>22891440
90% of Shinkalion fans are adult otaku who buy all the merch

It's been that way since the 00s. The 90s were the last great revival of the mecha genre for all ages, at least in our time. The 00s were the last great gasp of 70s mecha properties with all sorts of OVAs, concerts and whatnot. We still get both but it's becoming rarer and the masters of old are dying out. But we were lucky. Mecha bloomed in the 60s, dominated the 70s, kept evolving through the 80s, surged in the 90s and blossomed one last time in the 00s. Anything else is just a bonus at this point.

>>
>>22891319
It's not a genre
And it is this way because it was made this way, pretty much only Takara still sponsors kids' mecha shows while everyone else abandoned it. Bamco is such a massive conglomerate having acquired so many fucking media franchises that it's frankly an unhealthy business environment since it seems like everything now is "either it sells as much as One Piece or we're throwing it in the trash." There's not enough competition, Bamco themselves are only funding what makes them the absolute most money, the Japanese economy is doing poorly and animation work is outsourced to Koreans on the cheap
On the other hand, recent kids' oriented mecha shows seem to be pretty successful on average. We've seen this with stuff like Build Fighters, Time Bokan 24, Shinkalion, Zoids Wild, and maybe Megaton Musashi? (I don't know too much about MM). There's definitely demand for it, though I don't know how much of that is down to novelty factor. The fact that Bamco still doesn't think it's something worth pursuing despite this shows that they're probably getting too big to sustain themselves.

While it’s important to preserve the younger fans since a genre cannot live without this…
…I’m still happy it’s mostly old people here. I just can’t stand kids most of the time they are annoying.
>>
>>22891455
Megaton Musashi is clearly made for a teenage audience, just like successor machine god unbreaker the new mecha manga on coro coro's website.

>>22891484
Let's see if it stays that way is hero association becomes a successful series and/or more naruo mecha novels get anime adaptations.
>>
>>22891491
>clearly
I mean I guess I'll take your word for it, but the line between kid shows and teenager shows in Japan has always been more about whether teenagers like it than whether kids do. Kids are gonna like both

The whole discourse around this always felt a little weird to me. "Children's mecha shows" as we understand them, weren't really a thing until like 1988 when Wataru popped up. Before that pretty much every mecha show appealed to multiple demographics. Wataru is the first show that feels like it was meant exclusively for kids. But maybe that's because it was just assumed before then that all media featuring robots and superheroes were for kids anyway? Where do you draw the line? I don't know, man
>>
>>22891484
We were all annoying kids once, unless you got popped out of a test tube as a fully grown /m/an. At least with our hobby a 10 year old can get into it without breaking their parents bank. Have you seen the prices for Lego sets nowadays? Everything's going for manchild prices now. Meanwhile you can get a basic Grampa Gundam kit for less than 20 bucks for the most part. I like seeing younger people get into mecha. Makes me feel like I have an interest I can pass onto any kids I might have, even if they aren't as obsessed with it as I am.

It's not that they don't want a slice of the market, it's that their kid-oriented stuff just don't appeal to that demographic (even GBF). Just look at how they're raping old Takara shows like Wataru and potentially Brave
>>
>>22891371
Around 2012 because this photo was taken in relation to Gyrozetter failing.
>>
>>22891319
It's a women's genre
>>
>>22891440
They literally switched out the cast of Shinkalion to be older and changed the tone cause little kids barely watch.
>>
>>22891608
Do you know for sure that's why? Maybe they just wanted to keep things from getting stale. Maybe they wanted to grow with kids who started watching the original show when it came out, which was like 6 years ago. Anyone who was 10 back then is now 16, those are things that have to be considered with these long runners
>>
>>22891630
Yeah I think that's more likely.
>>
>>22891319
Yeah. You have to own land, have a job, pay for insurance, drive a car, have a wife, and have children if you want to be allowed to think giant robots are cool.
>>
>>22891333
Maybe if you are sticking to real robot gundam aping series. There's a serious lack (IMO), of real robot vs kaiju mecha series. The closest there ever has been was Pacific rim. But that's a genre mashup that feels hostile to the japanese mind.
>>
>>22891603
The last time I had a really good chat about mecha stuff off-site was with a Japanese woman who really liked GaoGaiGar.

Kids don't really seem to have any interest in cars, tanks, planes or any vehicles or machinery at all anymore. It doesn't impress them the way it did us, or inspire the imagination I guess (if they have any at all)
>>
>>22896261
What does that have to do with mecha? I hate cars, tanks, planes and other boring real life garbage.
>>
This is my very limited experience teaching English in Japan for a semester, but last year it seems like kids were cycling back into tokusatsu. Godzilla (Minus One just came out) was big and so was Ultraman.
>>
>>22896261
VTubers are the new cars.
>>
>>22896264
Interest in machines tends to carry over to other sorts of machines as well. You being a freak doesn't reflect on trends.
>>
>>22896264
I understand car hate, because the steering mechanism is frankly conceptually retarded beyond comprehension for a civilian-tier vehicle everybody is expected to use, but why planes?
>>
>>22896282
>the steering mechanism is frankly conceptually retarded beyond comprehension for a civilian-tier vehicle everybody is expected to use
if it was that bad it would not have been the standard for so long

How the fuck am I a freak for not liking your autistic boring boomer shit?

>>22896282
Planes are boring as hell. I actually used to work as an aviation tech when I was in the army and I just don't get the fascination people have with jets/helicopters. Some of the dudes I was stationed with were kinda into it but I saw it as nothing more than work.

Electronic old men and their flexibility, running the world.
>>
>>22896296
That would explain it then, people tend to have different attitudes towards something if they just see it every once in a while vs work with it day after day.
>>
>>22896279
female Vtubers in Japan are mostly watched by 20+ guys and male ones are mostly watched by fujos and yumes in their teens and young adulthood.

>>22891517
The irony is that kids not watching it gave the animators an excuse to insert plenty of sexual fanservice for a kodomo lol

?

No, superpowers are boring. I like seeing machines do work, not super-special-donuts getting hurt and miraculously recovering (even if the robots are piloted by super-special-donuts, and said special donut just won't die because he's at the centre of the universe).
