=READ THE GUIDE=

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For the unclear, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam.

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the site from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To fix this, save your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One commonly used app that works well on Android:

== NIGHTMARE GROUPBUILD ==

Build a mecha encompassing different aspects of the horror genre. Examples include
>A mecha that incorporates general horror tropes from literature, film, and anime
>A corrupted version of an existing mecha/robot through magical, biological, or alien means (ie Symbiotes, parasites, Daemonic possession)
>Organic mecha (ie Evangelions) and monsters from /m/-related media (ie: the BETA from Muv-Luv)
>A mecha that draws inspiration from various demons or monsters from different mythologies and religions.

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry, as well as a brief description of your build.

Fixed up the snapped joint J30 on the MG Zeta 2.0. Cement + Putty were my frens. I might need to clean up the putty for painting. Also, the hands on the 2.0 are the best Feddie hands. Why the Emotion Manipulators suck so much ass?
>>
>>22921581
because they're made from the same plastic as the RG MS advanced joints, which are very susceptible to ERGS (easily gets loose over time)

>>
>>22922281
I fully expect at least a Mighty Strike Freedom, Destiny Spec II and Infinite Justice Type II, at minimum. The regular MGs of their "previous" kits are all more than 15 years old at this point, this gives them an excuse to print more money since those always sell out. Also, P-Bandai refits to make the originals, and a P-Bandai MGEX Mighty Strike Freedom (not a Proud Defender expansion for the existing MGEX Strike Freedom, you have to buy the whole thing all over again).

>>22922301
In your case, I guess it would depend on how many kits you plan to paint red, and if you're fine with "close enough." A regular, light and dark red sound more or less reasonable since it's one of those colors you'll get a lot of use out of, but I'm also balls deep into the hobby and don't mind spending that much on paint.

Stuff like the Char Red or Wine Red are distinct but for stuff like this? Aside from Sazabi Red maybe being slightly brighter they're the same to me
>>
>>22922398
I'm not colorblind, but those are extremely similar shades of red. The only major difference is the first two are a bit desaturated, the rest are nearly the same.

>switch to ONE enamel
>airbrush gets clogged instantly
>lose half an hour cleaning airbrush
>my bad it was a pretty old bottle
>get a brand new one
>no clogging but tons of specks like the paint is drying inside the airbrush
I fucking hate enamel. Also mig a-stand gloss black base is advertised as lacquer but it's the same as before when the brand was alclad
>>
>>22922398
Yeah, those are all extremely similar. Personally, I would be fine with shit like my Sazabi and Sinanju being the exact same shade of red (or just ever so slightly different from me adding a touch of black or white to one of them).

For someone who isn't that particular, three shades of red should be more than enough: a regular red, a light red and a dark red, all obviously different from each other when looking by eye. Mix black, white and the other reds to get what you want. Again, depends on how much red you plan to paint, and if you're not sure you can settle with two and buy a third later on.

>>22922404
Are you cutting it with hardware store lacquer thinner? And don't mix it directly inside the paint cup, it's an easy way for unthinned paint to drip directly into the needle channel and clog things up. I've learned that the hard way.

It's prethinned. I always had trouble with it. Today I shook the hell out of the brand new bottle I used and I still got specks. Thank god I only needed it for a handful of parts. No speck was spat out while I was spraying so I'm unsure when they started appearing. Had to disassemble and manually clean the airbrush to get rid of all of them because airbrush cleaner wouldn't get rid of them

When adding stuff like pic related to a kit, what's recommended between thin plastic cement and super glue?
Flat surfaces.

I'm seeing a lot of people recommend metal files for getting rid of the excess cement and shit when removing seamlines - can you not achieve the same thing by peeling away at it with your knife + a sanding stick? A metal file sounds like it would just chew your shit up
>>
Is it normal for a single enamel layer to be very thick ? The texture is fine but the layer is really fucking fat compared to lacquers, parts don't fit anymore
>>
>>22922636
you can achieve similar results yes, but the nicest finish will always involve progressive sanding.
>>
>>22922636
Yeah people also use triangular scrapers
>>
>>22922643
For now I'm just gonna stick with the sanding sticks/sponges since I already own them
If I'm dissatisfied I guess i'll look into buying a file in the future
>>
>>22922651
Files vs sanding sticks/sponges are a matter of preference. I don't use files for shit personally. Godhand sanding sponges are my life now.
>>
>>22922636
Sanding and knives will only get so far, and unfortunately despite what bandaibabies might say bandai kits don't exactly have a great fit in regards to step (not gap, the amount of height between parts that are pressed together or molded together in the case of mold lines). Especially for older kits or overprinted kits, so anything older than a few years. Metal files come very handy in dealing with those terrible steps as they remove excess material very quickly.
Tamiyas fine cut won't leave deep scratch marks, so i recommend grabbing those.

So it turns out that the third-party expansion kit comes with a free cheap little clear display base. Don't think I'll need it since I have plenty of Action Base 2's and 5's, but it's a nice gesture. What's the purpose of clear colored paints - just for putting on clear parts? Or does it add a tint on "solid" colors?
>>
>>22922764
Fluorescents can be really cool for eyes and effect parts. I use fluorescent greens and pinks on my eye parts all the time.
>>
>>22922795
The latter. They're great for spraying over metallics or adding gradients. It's not just a tint, the color can be quite potent.
>>
>>22922795
Yes, throw some clear blue over a gm visor, or use it over a metallic base coat for a candy effect.
>>
>>22922795
clear colors over chrome/silver is how you do candy effects
they can also be useful for adding textural depth, for example a common approach for painting skin tones is using a base skin color and then highlighting various areas with clear reds/oranges/browns

>>
>>22922392
This is a great way to approach smaller projects. I do this for most kits. Not everything needs to be a whole repaint, especially if you like the existing colors. Small accents go miles. Light marker work, panel lining, decals, topcoat, looks great.
A lot of what this guy did you can do by just using your marker for the desired color, then brushing that around to distribute it. Multiple layers of marker pulls up a lot of old paint, so I move it around with a brush. HG/RGs have a ton of detail that can shine like this.

One thing on seamlines, you can lean into them and make them panel lines if they're in a somewhat normal spot. Like the front forearm for the zaku, that one sucks but in normal posing you aren't getting a good look at it.

there has been a huge debate about this in our local community actually. they're not banning self-made decals, but they will ban third-party ones. we're probably the only GBWC to have this rule AFAIK. and with the lack of transparency in judging at GBWC, you'll never know if you're infringing on that rule or if the judges are turning a blind eye over certain favorites to win. just go Tetsujin or Ora Zaku if you really want to see where the actual greats gather.

HG Sazabi is great, and greater if you are going to paint it. Not that many awkward filling/sanding parts, the best Sazabi head (yes, including the MGs) and best relative scale of limbs (I will accept some argument on the MGs). You can't go wrong with it.
The RG is nice, and looks great on a shelf with other RGs, but it doesn't hold a candle to the HG if you even do so much as panel line it imho.

Not him but as someone who has a lot of experience in modding kits to give them extra articulation I can IMMEDIATELY tell if they made a model of the Sazabi 100% accurate to the original lineart the joints would have extremely limited range due to to the design. You could definitely try to make one but you'll see what I'm talking about as soon as you start. Those knees could probably bend 30° at most and there's no way the elbows could do more than 90°. You'd have to change a few things to give it extra mobility, hence why the RG makes concessions with the proportions

My HG Calibarn is calling to me... I want to just snapbuild it but I can't help and theorize how to get a render close to the illustration.
Feel like the joints could be done with metallics, a blueish wash and some highlights, but I'm lost on how to actually give the white that subtle blue reflection effect.
Any advice? Calibarn on its own is kind of a boring design so I want to work on shading and effects to embellish it without recoloring the kit altogether.

Ended up using a crest-like slide that I had on an extra sheet (I think it was from gundam thunderbolt) for the battalion insignia because I couldn't find anything that I felt was suitable. I'm okay with it since this one was already straying into "custom" territory with some of the color changes I chose and how the British typhoons only really exist in the Muv-Luv lore in an obscure magazine series from a decade ago

Kinda hard to say since wfm sold really well as well and the best they could scrounge up is a FM Aeriel. I would really to have an MG Cal Rea.
>>
>>22924963
I've heard from my local reseller that they personally don't sell MGs period because they take up too much space in storage while being relatively niche, and the FM Aerial was an exception since it was in a smaller box (and carried by the general WFM hype).

Not sure how that logic applies in other countries or in the eyes of Bandai, but maybe it's part of why we're seeing so little MG kits.

I could imagine a lot of factors go into the death of regular MG releases.

Size of packaging of an MG seems a bit low on the list, but pallet and shelf fill up fast. Probably now a big issue outside of metro hobby shops.

Size of the model is a big factor in my mind. No shortage of MG fans but it's not uncommon to hear about people running out of display/backlog space. We're in a higher renting unit society. HG's and RG's are notably smaller and allow higher headcount in the same space, reduce scaling disparity in collections, and newer modeling manufacturing has made for very pleasing HG's.

Smaller kits makes seller space more profitable, shipping cheaper, display space more populated, less plastic and manufacturing, and reduce designing not worrying about making most kits into a skeletal MG since very few become RG's anyway. MG purists usually have had to get something 1/144 scale just due to thing-they-like actually existing in that size. PGU's probably get to keep swimming as they have been due to being a well defined niche of size, price and complexity with continued demand.
>>
>>22925036
not* a big issue outside of metro hobby shops.

Bandai, it's time to give us the Turn X.
But not just any Turn X, a MGEX Turn X that makes each individual limb into complex subunits of their own, with extra vents and cannons able to unfold to properly embody the fantasy of a mech that splits apart into its own funnels, combining an absolutely KINO design with the unprecedented fantasy of limb-funnels that don't just look like a floating arm lazing around.

I'm counting on you Bandai. Don't fuck it up.

I love the Turn X all around. I love the asymmetry, I love how alien it is, I love the exposed frame, I love its claw, I love its cannon arm, I love its triangle legs, I love its weapon platform backpack.

I want an accessible Turn X that doesn't require ten years of waiting for a reprint, and to paint one with some cool colorshift paints to hammer in how bizarre it is compared to other Gundam mechs.
I just wish we had a modernized Turn X kit, not necessarily in design but in engineering, that does justice to the unusual design and gimmick properly, because I feel like MS based around funnels often look very bland without effect parts and what I've seen of the Turn X kit just... kinda doesn't look great in funnel mode to me.
Like I said, I think the existing easily comes across as a bunch of floating limbs you couldn't be arsed to put together and not an artillery of beam weapons all ready to blow you up before recombining to drive a claw into the enemy's cockpit and tear the pilot out, so you can see the fear in his eyes from up close by detaching your cockpit and hovering over to his whimpering ass to taunt him personally before crushing him to death.
And it deserves better than this.

Airbrush Flow Improver is a retarder meaning it makes the paint dry slower.
>inb4 stop using shitcrylic
Yes.
>>
>>22925262
Acrylics are fine for the most part but you will NEVER get 'good' results with acrylic metallic. Just learn to paint Non metallic metals technique or buy enamel/lacquer metallic paint. These are your only options.
>>
>>22924852
Fuck. So it's a guessing game basically?
>>
>>22925302
can't you use just the airbrush thinner? like anon said flow improver is a retardant which is precisely what you dont want with metallics

i see, thanks. idk why i expected metallic paint to behave the same way as my other acrylics. been having a decent time with vallejo's mecha colors
>>
>>22925323
Yes but this is a good thing. Before this scalpers KNEW that certain kits would not be reprinted that year and jacked up the prices accordingly. 3-4 gunpla prices were at an all time high. You'd see average HGs going for $100 online.
>>
>>22925314

they're fine for hand painting small details

If the way metallic acrylics dry is an issue, what about drybrushing them onto black primer when it comes to painting larger surfaces and not like small details or sensors?

HG Gogg. Got it for 10 bucks. Introduced me to gunpla in general and even thinking back about it, I think it's even today a good mix of simple engineering, decent articulation for such an old kit and bulky ms, and there's a bunch of little things you can do to improve the kit even without much knowledge so it's perfect as a canvas for beginners.

Applying decals on the cargo pieces of koto reverse trike makes me want to kys myself
>>
Do matte black and white have any practical application when you can just toss a matt top coat on instead
>>
>>22925563
yeah the idea is you don't have to use topcoat at all and save topcoat and effort since you can do it with a 2 in 1
>>
>>22925571
But it's recommended to throw gloss on before decals so wouldn't you have to use a second top coat layer anyway?
>>
>>22925502
$10 sounds top tier for the Gogg, I heard the loose joints suck ass and the fingers break easily, but neither was the case for me. It's lumbering and can't really walk or kick well, but those are non-issues for a king of the seas. I've been waiting to find one and finally got one recently and wasn't disappointed. It's nice to have the amphibious suits all together too.
The Zock on the other hand looks like it goes for a very consistent, above-average, but fair price compared for its bulk. Just feels like by the nature of how it is, it'll feel underwhelming, but maybe it'll feel fine if it completes the OYW aquatic ensemble
>>
>>22925028
I'm still waiting on my order from USAGS which is supposedly being fulfilled Q4. My Q3 order with HG G-Self Perfect is still not complete for some damned reason.
>>
>>22925576
You don't need to gloss coat parts for panel lining or decals if they're already gloss
>>
>>22924923
not the fellatrix zaku
>>
>>22925593
As in using a gloss black? I guess my question would be how could you be able to trust that your matt black paint (No decal on this part) would look the same as your gloss black that has a matt top coat on top
>>
>>22925589
>loose joints
Honestly a cheap joint strengthening pen will do wonders for that kind of thing
>>
Question, is it good to fill some part with putty such as rifles?
>>
>>22925597
You can always test it out on spoons if you want to be sure. There's practically no difference

You know lacquer solvents / retarders are just generic chemicals right? You don't HAVE to use mr color brand.
Even if absolutely zero local stores have anything in stock (and you dont wanna order from online stores because shipping is 10 fuckin bucks and it's not worth it without a bigger order) you can order chinese brands like DSPIAE or Jumpwind leveling thinners on aliexpress, they ship basically anywhere and are always in stock.

Got some questions if anyone can answer them.

1. Friend gifted me a Blazing Gundam kit from Gundam Breakers but he decided to be a cheeky dude and put it in another box to surprise me. Unfortunately when he did this he forgot the sticker sheet. Anyone know where I can get a replacement for it?

2. I lost a hand and because Bandai doesn't include extra hands anymore my build is incomplete. Anyone know where i can find a replacement part for the Zowort Heavy?
>>
Thanks for your service.
