In the Wing manga, Zechs was never truly on White Fang's side, he was only pretending to lead them to undermine their efforts and support the Gundam pilots from the inside, he even helps them destroy Libra directly in the end. It's more consistent than the anime at least.

I've rewatched Wing 4+ times by now and I just think it's good fun.
Atypical 90s anime where they try too hard to be serious and edgy but instead just made everything goofy as hell.

Treize explained that by taking the people out of the fight you end up fighting way more often and for pettier reasons because there's no stakes on the battlefield. And once one side loses then things can get even worse since there's no humanity holding the mobile dolls from warcriming it up, especially since the control system can be run by one person so there's even less accountability/systems in place to restrain it.

I don't think that was really a factor, it was the second destruction of the Sanc Kingdom that drove Zechs into full CCA-mode.

He was just kind of a depressed wreck after that. It wasn't until Quinze found him a while later because he had a Gundam and he was looking for Gundam pilots to lead the White Fang as a symbol of rebellion. And even then Zechs mostly just went along with it because of that big plan he and Trieze somehow worked out together despite not being in contract with each other.

Zechs came to the exact same conclusion Treize did on the world peace question, that if world peace were to ever be acheive, mankind would have to see the absolute bloodiest battle in all of human history to scar them into never thinking about wanting to go to war ever again. Zechs at the time though, thought there was no way mankind would ever be driven to such a point and such a conflict would ever happen, he still believed that so long that were examples of pacifist nations demonstrating no need for military matters then other would hope look to that nation as point of reference to achieve peace amongst one another in that way. That was his sole reason for even being battles. it was just to liberate his pacifist homeland and regain it's independence. Not only did it keep getting topple however despite doing it's best to stay out of conflicts under Relena's control, every time he went to go help someone else finish there conflict and gain their freedom to live peacefully, they would then go "Yeah we did, now lets go take are revenge and show them who's boss!" Leaving Zechs completely dumbfounded by these retards, casting away the freedom and peace they were just fighting for and actually won, and instead choosing to go right back to war.
